Re: Need Help Reading Town Name on Ship’s Manifest #galicia #records

Susan&David

The town is Liczkowce, Husiatyn District.
Do you notice passenger on line 4 is her relative?   He is from Trybuchowce, Gal.
Passengers 2,3 and 4 all have the abbreviation Gal. after their home towns. I believe this is Galicia,

Thanks Corinne - appreciate your work on this.  I'm really only thinking about Otto and his parents because he came to Scotland, so not trying to trace the family backwards.

The first letter is an L as you can see elsewhere on the page Luxembourg. The town also is listed as the town her father is from followed by Gal. (Galicia). On the Gesher Galicia town finder, Liczkowce (Liczkowze) is listed in Husiatyn district.

Could Steckman be Stockman.  I have Stockman in my family.  He came from Przeworsk, also Galicia.

Be advised that some countries do not accept double nationality.

Some require you to renounce your existing citizenship.

On the other hand, some countries don’t allow you to renounce your citizenship. In this last case, you are in trouble if you are applying for citizenship to a country that does not allow double nationality.

Question: Although my grandfather came from Krakow (now Poland), he was always listed as "Austrian" in census, and other documents. Would I be eligible for "Austrian" citizenship?
His sister, her husband and son disappeared, from Krakow, during the Holocaust.

Since Linda's signature indicates that the Steckmans were from Husiatyn, I looked in Gesher Galicia's Galician Town Locator (https://www.geshergalicia.org/galician-town-locator/) for towns spelled L..zkowce in that vicinity. The closest is Liczkowce, a village in the Husiatyn administrative district. It's not listed in the JewishGen Communities Database*, which includes only about 6,000 towns, but it is in the comprehensive JewishGen Gazetteer,* as Luchkovtsy, Ukraine. On Google Maps, it's Lychkivtsi, Ukraine, about 6 miles from Husiatyn by car. It's very near Trybukhivtsi (formerly Trybuchowce).

To see the town on a 19th century map, go to the Gesher Galicia Map Room -- https://maps.geshergalicia.org . I found it by searching the Third Military Survey (1869-1887) by the current spelling (Lychkivtsi).

A Sune or Sime Stekman from Liczkowce, 18, also a daughter of Josef, immigrated in Oct. 1912. Could she have been Ernestina's sister? She was joining an uncle, Uscher Pfeffer, on Delancey St.

* Read about the two databases at https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/About.htm .

Like others have mentioned, the main advantage for me would be to regain the right to live and work anywhere in the EU. I have New Zealand and British citizenship but want the option to be able to join my extended family in Europe.

I've started the application process by filling out the online questionnaire and am currently pulling together all the documents I need.

Re: Data Breach at GEDmatch has Concerns Over Privacy #dna #announcements

Jx. Gx.

I fully understand the emotional desire to connect with long lost relatives through the use of DNA testing.  Aside from the sometimes questionable accuracy of these test results, a much bigger concern is that once you give away your DNA data you lose all control of who has access to it and how it can be used.  Data breaches by rogue states and criminal organizations are a serious danger and we should do everything in our power to protest ourselves. Criminal enterprises are not content with just your DNA. In recent years they have hacked into the Experian credit reports, Home Depot, Target stores, Yahoo.com, the U.S. government's Office of Personnel Management, and many other online sites. Millions of people have been affected. Social media, where people openly post photos of themselves and other personal information is a treasure trove of information for thieves.  When they pull together all the personal information and "connect the dots," they have a person's entire life's history in their hands. They can sell off this information piecemeal to other criminals on the dark web or as an entire package. They can also use this data for their own nefarious purposes. The recent sale of Ancestry to private equity companies should also be of major concern to everyone. The first priority of all equity firms is to make money. Historically, equity companies hold on to their acquisitions until they find a buyer willing to pay them top dollar. That buyer could be China or any other hostile country. These countries could also set up shell companies and buy controlling interest in DNA testing companies. Our personal data is valuable to bad people.  We have to protect ourselves by not making it easy for them to gain access to our information.

Re: Seeking any and all information on Max Koenig and Hannah (Morgenstern)Koenig #usa

Hi Sarah. Ann Dee Lee here. I think we've talked before but I thought I'd reconnect. My great grandfather was Max Koenig. I have one record on Ancestry that says he was from Krasne, Austria. My grandfather Sam for some unknown reason, changed his last name to Miller and moved to South Dakota. He died in South Dakota and was buried there. All of the rest of the Koenig's stayed in Bridgeport to my knowledge. My family took a trip to Bridgeport when I was little and met a zillion new relatives. I remember one cousin/uncle who was a boxer, one of Nathan's kids. So, long story short, I am confused about who is who. I wish I could help but there's no one to ask. My grandmother (Elizabeth) and mother (Ethel) are both gone. I don't know if the record on Ancestry is the right Max, but it appears he died in 1942, about six months before Nathan died. Feel free to contact me.

Sarah,

You can see a transcription of some death cert info at:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2240477

Seeing spouse and parent's names will help determining if one of these is who you seek.

The only one on your list with a spouse named Anna is Max Konick age 84 died in kings 4/23/1945 #8594.

I did not find the death cert for Anna in 1948 to be listed in this database.

Searching for Joseph Bernard Friedman #courland #latvia

Friedman, H George

My great grandfather was Joseph Bernard Friedman.  I cannot get any further back than about 1870.  Please bear with me through this long plea for help.

I have two levels of information about him: family lore, and documented.

Family lore is that he emigrated to New York before the Civil War, enlisted in the Union Army, and eventually mustered out in the south, where he lived the rest of his life.  I have been able to verify some of this.

Documentation begins with his first marriage in 1870 in St Louis to Tillie Peiser.  They settled in Holly Springs, MS (1870 US Census).  By early 1871, they settled permanently in Boutte, St. Charles Parish, LA, where he was appointed Postmaster in 1872, and held several parish (county) offices from time to time.  They had five children: an infant who lived only a few days, then Miriam, Ettie/Esther, William/Willie, and Eva.  Tillie died in 1878, apparently in childbirth (the inscription on her tombstone implies that there is an infant buried with her).  Joseph (J. B.) married Bertha Reichenberg in 1880; I have her genealogy well documented, including collaboration with other Reichenbergs both in the USA and in Germany.  They had four more children, including my grandfather, Harry Friedman.

J.  B. was assassinated in 1888, an event which is well documented in newspapers and other sources.  He, both of his wives, and his eldest daughter Miriam are buried in Gates of Prayer Canal Street Cemetery in New Orleans.

The census reports of J. B. claim he was born in Prussia c. 1840 (1870 census) and Kurland c. 1841 (1880 census), which makes sense.  His birthday is given on his gravestone as 21 Jan 1841, and in several primary records (e.g., his marriage license with Bertha, his second wife) as 1841.

I have searched for his military records, but am frustrated by the fact that there were numerous Joseph Friedmans in the Union Army, with no way to distinguish among them.

I have searched SteveMorse.org for his emigration to the USA, which yields four hits in ancestry.com in 1857 and 1858 for a Joseph Friedman, one from Bremerhaven, one from Hamburg, and two from Le Havre.  But again, there isn't enough information to decide which, if any, is my GGF.

Thank you for reading this long message.  Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

George Friedman
