JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Sherri - my G Grandfather was found under 'Lucher' not Zucker. I can see the handwriting on the manifest was very messy and likely caused the mixup. I hope I find the information for my grandmother - I think they came over separately.

Peter,
Depending on what your computer capabilities are and what software you have installed. The method I use is easy and fast. I'm using an IMAC and photoshop. 1. Enlarge the best copy of the image found and make a screen print. 2. Open the screen print in photoshop. 3. Crop and otherwise enhance the image with the various filters/options available on photoshop. There may be other programs that function as photoshop. I don't know. But this is what I use with fairly consistent and legible results. (Of course, if the original is poor quality...the challenge remains). Shana tova. After I find the image, I select the image (left click) on a Windows PC. When it opens I right click and do "Save Image As" and I select the location on my PC to save the image. Then I can work on my PC with the image.

Except for the father, Leisar Rosen, I am unable to find immigration/naturalization records for the family. They came from Russia/Poland, lived in England for several years and some of the family members may have come to the US via Canada. The information I have is as follows: The father, Lazar (Leiser, etc.) Rosen b. about 1868-1871, born in Bransk Poland/Russia, came to the US in 1900 (Ellis Island) - sailed from Antwerp. That is the only boat record that I can locate. The other family members came at different times. Mother: Ida Resnick (Reznik) Rosen (my cousin) born ca 1869-1872. Children: Jacob Benjamin Rosen b. 1889, John Rosen . 1891 - both born in Poland/Russia. Sarah/Saide b. 1893, Isidore Albert b. 1895, Anna M. born 1898, Morris/Maurice/Mark (arrived in US in 1906?) b. 25 Dec 1900 - all born in England. Pearl born 20 Nov 1907 in New Jersey. The family appears together in the 1910 U. S. Census.
If anyone has access to records from England and Canada, I would really appreiate some help. A Healthy New Year to everyone. Avivah R. Z. Pinski , near Philadelphia, USA

We provide links to various repositories, based on where the images are held. The method to download the highest possible resolution image from each differs somewhat.
The Polish State Archives can mean that you end up at one of 3 different sites: 1) the old National Digital Archives site: https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/ • click on the thumbnail, • on the resulting somewhat larger image that pops up, click on the icon near the lower right corner that looks like a box with arrows to pull out the 4 corners, • in the new window that opens with the full resolution image, scroll down to the bottom and click on the Download control in the center, bottom. 2) the new National Digital Archives site: https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/ • click on the Download control near the upper right corner of the window. 3) the AGAD site: http://agadd.home.net.pl/ * right (or control) click (based on your platform) and select Save Image As ... Re: LEVINE family, Cardiff, Wales

harold.love@...
I don’t know the family. My great grandfather, Joseph Love, and his brothers Myer and Benjamin and sister Sarah Stone (husband Malach) arrived in Cardiff from Grodno in the late 1880s or early 1890s and assumed the name Love which is similar to Levy. It is said that my great grandfather claimed the family name was Dobromyslov but it’s a brick wall that I haven’t been able to beak through. Has anyone ever heard that name? Joseph Love was the only sibling to move to the United States. My grandfather and two of his brothers were born near Cardiff before sailing for New York in late 1899. I love telling people I have Welsh ancestry Harold Love

Need help finding naturaliz records for my GGM in New York City
#records
N. Summers
Her married name is Channe > Annie / Sarah Ann Lyss >Alper. Sometimes misspelled Hana. I've searched on ancestry, familysearch and myheritage (altho my search skills are imperfect) and in the NARA online database (scary!) without finding anything helpful. Is there any other way to find some information?
This is what I have been able to find: Passenger arrival manifest for Channe Lyss and 5 of her children in 1904. Husband Morris and sons Sam and Jones came earlier. Everyone in the family changed their name to Alper just after arrival. Husband Morris naturalized in 1906, under old law that didn't require filing DOI or Petition. He died in 1910, after the census was taken. Annie's 1905-1940 census records, all in Bronx or Manhattan, New York. Annie probably naturalized between 1915 and 1920, as her status changed from "Al" to "Na" on the two census documents. Sarah Ann death records in 1947. Parents name is Welhonitz or Wolkowitz Many thanks, Nancy -- Nancy Summers Maryland, USA

Re: Seeking individuals with a connection to Raseiniai, Lithuania
Lin Mor
Dear Dr Corb,
My Great Grandmother, Rachel Leah Press Shneyder was killed along with her married daughter Rivka Shneyder Gor and four very young children, two named Velvel and Chana. The names of the other two are unknown. All were taken somewhere outside of Raseiniai where these crimes took place. When I was in Lithuania in 2007, the location was unknown and I was unable to visit it. We did visit the museum in Raseiniai and it occurred to me that many of the photos we saw were possibly of the Jewish residents and there were lists of synagogue members. A passerby told our guide, Rosa, where the synagogue used to be. We also saw where the Jewish Cemetery was, the only thing remaining on this plot of land with apartments was a plaque on the low stone wall remaining that was once the cemetery border. We also visited Vidukle, the nearby town where the Shneyder family lived for 2-3 generations, my family had left by 1941 when these murders took place. We did see the site where the women and children were buried near the Jewish Cemetery. We also visited the site near the RR station where the men and older boys from Vidukle and some other places were taken and murdered. As we were walking around Vidukle, Rosa pointed out which buildings were once Jewish homes, ended to be along the road. An old lady was sitting in the sun by the barn adjacent to one of these houses. Rosa asked if she was here during the war and she said that she was a child then. When the conversation turned to the previous ownership of the property, she got up and went into the house and refused to speak further. We can only conclude that her family took over the property when the Jews living there were gone. People are afraid that descendants of victims want their property returned. We could clearly see where the synagogue once was. I do have a picture of a picture of it. I am sorry I have no further concrete details to help your investigation, Please include me when communicating the findings of your investigation. Thank you. Linda Cohen Morzillo

Dear Group,
A couple, my relatives, were married at the house of the Rabbi of Katowice's Jewish community in 1935. The marriage ceremony was held at the Rabbi's house because the bride was his relative. The bride and groom perished in the Holocaust a few years later. Where would you suggest to search for the Marriage Record? I'd greatly appreciate an advice. Thank you very much - Yaron Wolfsthal

Har Nebo and Mitchell Collier, yes Mitch you are correct. The old cemetery looks old, not decayed, but decaying. You have come across a process, not an end. You have come across the remains of Shakespeare’s “Bare ruin’d choirs.” And you have described the Cemetery in your narrative and photos too well. But the old cemetery has a good memory. Let’s go back to its youth, when it was time to bury one of the most beloved rabbis in Philadelphia Jewry, Rabbi Abraham H. Erschler who died in 1910, and was brought from the Jewish quarter, accompanied by 5,000 mourners crowded into this little, but growing cemetery. Or four years later when Anshe Shavel shul buried its 30 burnt Torah’s and buried them beside Rabbi Erschler. Let’s read about these days, in the Jewish Daily Forward, November 20, 1910, written by Abraham Cahan, or four years later by Philadelphia newspapers, Jewish Exponent, November 25, 1910, or November 21, or the Record, Nov 23, 1914 (front page), etc. Harry D.
