Babi Yar (Babyn Yar) is a ravine outside the Ukrainian city of Kyiv (Kiev) where Einsatzgruppen mobile squads killed at least 34,000 Jews over a one week period in September 1941. Jews were marched in small groups to the Babi Yar ravine to the north of the city, ordered to strip naked, and then machine-gunned into the ravine. The massacre ended on September 30, and the dead and wounded alike were covered over with dirt and rock.

Between 1941 and 1943, between 70, 000 and 100,000 at Babi Yar (Babyn Yar) were shot by the Nazis ,including the entire Jewish population of Kiev, thousands more Jews, Soviet officials, and Russian prisoners of war were executed. As the German armies retreated from the USSR, the Nazis attempted to hide evidence of the massacres by exhuming the bodies and burning them in large pyres. Numerous eyewitnesses and other evidence, however, attest to the atrocities at Babi Yar, which became a symbol of Jewish suffering in the Holocaust. (https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/babi-yar-massacre-begins)

An international foundation was established to support the creation of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center. It has a museum, research institutes, a library and an archive.  Included in the online museum are a list of names of Babyn Yar victims which anyone can help by adding a name. Currently, there are over 18, 300 names. See: https://babynyar.org/en/names and a link for people to add names

Barbara Ellman

She actually would have been naturalized under her husband's application in 1906.
If she applied again separately, I would check the indexes at
If you a find an appropriate possibility, the images of the actual documents are available on familysearch EXCEPT for the Bronx & Queens naturaliations.  Bx & Q are only available from the county clerk.

Good luck

Vivs:

Because of arranged marriages, your assumption that the towns are near each other may not be correct.

His town is Sluck/Slutsk     https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/jgcd.php
His NY arrival, as Aisik HELFMAN,  was aboard the Vaderland, March 7, 1904, age 22, married, from Sluck. He traveled alone.  (Ancestry.com)
Her town much harder to determine.  Also her ship not as easy to find.  The town might be clearer there.  Do you have a census record with her year of immigration?
One other thing to consider-  He gave the information on the form, which may have been written by another person as he dictated the answers.

Joel,

One solution - You can sync with MyHeritage’s Family Tree Builder and export gedcom from there.

Hi,
I indexed many jewish records in Tuchola and the area. My grandmother's line is from there.

BUKOFZER is a common name in that area that is now Poland but used to be Prussia.
You can search the archive online here:

Holocaust victim search circa 1946 #holocaust

David Laskin

I am writing a novel set in the 20th century in which the wife of a
major character is murdered at Auschwitz.  She was living and hiding
in Paris during the Nazi occupation, but she was caught in 1943 and
imprisoned in Drancy (outside of Paris) and then taken to Auschwitz on
one of the last convoys out of Drancy and killed.  My character, an
American who had been fighting with the French Resistance, returns to
NYC after the war and starts to find out  what happened to his wife.

Here are my questions:  What organizations were involved in searching
for Holocaust victims at this period (late 1940s)? When did it become
widely known that Auschwitz was a death camp? Was HIAS active in
searching for Jews rounded up and deported during the war? What about
the Red Cross?

Thanks for your help and Shava Tova to all.

Nancy,

During that time frame, Annie would have derived her citizenship status from her husband.  She would not have separate naturalization documents.  Also, unfortunately, the docs of that period do not list spouses or children by name.

Don't assume that since there is no status next to her name in the 1910 census that she isn't already a citizen: item #132 in the 1910 census instructions states that notations should only be made only for foreign born males, age 21 or over.

Wolf family from Markt Berolzheim, Germany #germany

Lin Herz

Dear Jewish Genners,
L’Shana Tova.

The volunteer archivist from Markt Berolzheim found the home where my 2x great grandfather, Benjamin Emanuel HERZ and his brother Joseph Emanuel HERZ lived. The house number sounded familiar and it turns out it’s where my grandfather was born. Daniel Burmann, the archivist told me there is a sign in front of the house saying a Jewish business owned by Mr. Wolf had been there. Daniel would like to know more about this WOLF family. Does anyone have any relatives from Markt Berolzheim with the surname “WOLF?"

Stay safe and be well.

Sincerely,
Lin Herz

Re: Decipher handwritten text re citizenship status #records

Susan&David

1. Probably Father's papers. His father naturalized while Sam was a minor.  See if Sam's age matches the year of his father's naturalization.
2. She could show her husband's naturalization certificate along with her marriage certificate.  If it came to a court case, and she had neither document i.e., married in Europe, no Ketuba, the naturalization  could be obtained from the court and there could be people to attest to the facts of marriage.

I'm trying to decipther the handwritten entry for "Citizenship" on a 1925 NY census. In the column "If Naturalized, when and where" there are entries for my ggf Morris, ggm Clara and gu Sam. The first entry, for Morris, presumably means "naturalized in 1916 in New York".  The second entry, his wife Clara, I think says "Hus. Pap." which probably means she gained citizenship under her husband's naturalization papers. (on this census page, most of the wives have this notation)

But the third line, for their son Sam, is a mystery.  It doesn't look like "first papers"; and since he arrived in 1906 it is unlikely that he would have waited so long to file a Declaration. Can anyone figure out what this entry says?

Finally, if Clara became a citizen under her Husbands papers, how would she be able to prove her citizenship if needed later?

thanks so much,
Nancy

Allan,

Could this be the Egyptian newspaper you seek?

A lot more detail at:

"The newspaper Israël was established in 1920 by Dr. Albert Mosseri, a member of the venerable Jewish elite of Egypt, and one of the foremost leaders of the Zionist movement in his country. "

Does anyone else think it would be helpful to have tags for "immigration" and "citizenship"?  I have been using #records which doesnt seem too helpful.

I don't think there is a trick to resolving  that. The images are of centuries old-nib pen and ink documents that are fading with age. I have printed up many copies from the PSA and it is very hit and miss, depending more on the neatness of the writing and how the records have weathered the ages than working around this image issue. it is exactly the same issue with  the Kiev archives that Alex Krakovsky has been scanning  and uploading.  The only thing I have found is to enlarge the image and have a Polish Language crib sheet nearby!

Bukofzer / Oppenheimer in France FRENCH records #france

David Selig

   Hi Jewishgenners

I live in Paris.
I seek information on the two following people :

- Mart(ha) OPPENHEIMER,
born 26.11.1897, Bad Mergentheim, Germany
who married (as 2nd marriage)
- Fritz BUKOFZER
b. 22.05.1892, Filehne (Wielen) Prussia.

Fritz moved to Paris.  I believe it may have been in 1937.
Marta also moved to Paris, but I am not sure of the date.
At latest, May 1938 (this was recorded in her residence card in Mannheim from where she emigrated)  BUT it is possible it was earlier.
She had a sister Meta KAUFMANN, who moved to Paris in 1935.

Had Marta already met and MARRIED Fritz in Germany, or was that in Paris?
------------------------------
They went to the South of France at the start of the War.
WHERE?
It is possible they were in Marseille.
The Kaufmann family were photographed there, in ca. 1941.

ALl these returned to Paris, I believe when the South was occupied.
BUT WHEN?
Fritz and Marta survived, continued living there for many years.
The Kaufmann's were denounced and deported in 1944.
----------------------------
I hope to perhaps get some answers, from an archive with great history, known as the
"Fonds de Moscou".  (Moscow)

It was the general overall Police security police file (Sûreté) arching from 1920's until ? 1944? on all foreigners entering France.
The Germans seized it, then the Russians, who returned it top the French Archive Nationale in 1990's!
--------------------------------
Does anyone have other sources that could help?

(I have already checked :
- Paris phone books, Fritz and Marta remained ex-directory as far as I could tell...
- the Paris census of 1936
- some of the Paris marriage registry , which has to be searched for each arrondissment...

Thank you for any help
Best wishes to all
