Stakliskes, Lithuania - BARGER, ITMAN, KAPLAN #lithuania

Angie Elfassi

Hi,

My 2nd ggrandfather Benjamin ITMAN s/o Chaim can be found on ALD for 1858 as head of household and he was 55. He is registered with his wife Ita 52 and the following children:  Freyda (daughter - 18 years old), Branya (d - 15), Chayka (d - 11), Peysach (son - 34)  his wife Freyka - 31 and their daughter Chanka aged 1..

On the same page/list is:

Yankel BARGER s/o Berko - 49, his wife Henna - 37 and their daughter Chayka 11.

It says next to Yankel's name: cousin, next to Henna - cousin's wife, next to Chayka cousin's daughter

And also on the same page/list is:

Manko KAPLAN s/o Yudel - 40; his wife Feyga - 35 and their daughter Chanka 5

It says next to Manko's name: cousin, next to Feyga - cousin's wife, next to Chanka cousin's daughter.

Is anyone connected to the KAPLAN or BARGER families? and then we can connect to the ITMAN family.
Are there any clues Im missing if Benjamin's mother, Yankel's mother and Manko's mother were sisters? Or couled their mothers  - Yankel and Manko - be nee ITMAN?

Any suggestions or ideas would be gratefully accepted..

Thanks for your time and moadim l'simcha

Liz,

Searching https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl  I see a Murray LINDNER born 1915, mother's maiden SMITH.  There is also another Murray LINDNER born 1881.

Searching the above site for births, marriages & deaths may help you in your search.

Your Voice is Needed Now—NYC proposes limitations on your use of public records #general #records

Friends -

The New York Genealogical and Biological Society has posted the follow important message on their website.

The NYC Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) is proposing changes to how researchers can use public records held at the Municipal Archives (including New York City’s birth, marriage, and death records).

In short, DORIS is adding language that limits your ability to share these documents with others and prohibits the use of these public records for educational, scholarly, non-profit, or media purposes without a paid license.

The impact of these changes for researchers, genealogists, historians, and others is immense. You can learn more about these changes and their direct impact on you at nygbs.org/access-alert

From that page, you can learn how to add your voice to this conversation before October 23, 2020, by submitting your personal comments, signing a public comment, participating in the public hearing, and/or sharing this news with others.

We need your voice to affirm that public records created by taxpayer funds remain freely accessible.

Thank you for your support – Joshua

Re: File of Berdychev surnames 1897 census #ukraine

Family and DNA

Paul & everyone else -- that Boris Finkelstein file has lists of Jewish names for various "cases" (each book is a case) in the fond 384 opus 15. The names are divided by case, which is the 3-81 you see (1st page shows names in case 3-5 for instance). Some of these index files have page numbers, this one unfortunately does not.

If you see the name you want listed by BF under 3, you have to go to the file at https://uk.wikisource.org/wiki/Архіви/ДАКО/384/15/3 then look through that PDF for the name.

Hope this helps!

Just above the table of material is this clickable line: A poarkusnyy pointer of Jewish surnames. Cases 3-81. Author Boris Finkelstein
which opens a page with a listing of all the names appearing on pages 3 to 81 of something but I cannot figure out the material from which it was extracted.  As Chazen appears several times on the listing I'd love to find the original file that was used.

Dear Cesar,

I do not recognize the people in the picture but the interesting thing is your search about the Silbert family that migrated to Argentina in 1913. My grand mother family name was Silbert and I know that her parents came from Ukraine, Russia.

Do you know something more about this family? I can tell you some about mine maybe there is some relation.

By the way I also live in Israel .

Hoping to hear from you soon

Earl,

Try searching The JewishGen Ukraine Database
https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Ukraine/

I suggest doing a soundex (sounds like) search.  I very quick look at the database shows a few people named Tsoglin from Chernigov.  Surname also spelled TSOHLIN Other spellings show up, but you'll have to figure out if they are relevant to your family, or not.

JERUSALIMSKY/ROSEN-Schuzcin to USA #usa

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Interested in making contact with descendants of the JERUSALEMSKY
family from Sczuchin who came to the USA around the turn of the
19-20th century. In the USA most of them changed their family name to
ROSEN. They are known to have lived in Baltimore, Chicago and other
places.

My wife, Rebecca Ben-Ari is the daughter of Rabbi Morris YERUSHALMY

Re: Yiddish male given name 'Kos' #poland #names

Michele Lock

Reading all of the above, I think that the name Kos is from Kehos/Kohos/Kehat/Kohat, from the name of one of the son's of Levi. All very interesting.

I looked on SteveMorse to see if there are any New York City death records for the given name Kos or Koss, and there are about 10 of them, all from Jewish families. So, there were a few men walking around NYC with this name.

Thanks for the help.

My friend spent 5 years off and on trying to find her great grandfather by searching exactly for 'Aron Kos Shaler' and only with that spelling. Couldn't find anything. I found him in about 15 minutes by searching census records for anyone with the last name 'sounds like Shaler' in NYC, and found Aaron Shaler living in Brooklyn, age 70 years. And using Steve Morse, found the death record for Koss Shaler. Sure, I got plenty of Schillers and Schollers, and the like, but it was safe to ignore them.

Where can I find the birth certificate of someone who was born in a DP camp (Benzheim)? #records #holocaust

Jessica Eber

My cousins would like to find the birth certificate of their mother, who was born in 1946 in the DP Camp in Benzheim. Is there a special archive for DP camp records? Do they just write to the nearest German office of civil records? Thanks for any suggestions.

Success! Family Reunited After 68 Years #holocaust #JewishGenUpdates

Nancy Siegel

Say, Dad, Grandpa is Not dead? Reuniting the Family After 68 Years

by Noah Isman

“… Many people gathered at the border-crossing but the Russians did not let them pass. While they were waiting, and before Israel had a chance to find and join his father and brother, a German air raid started and the crowd dispersed, some running into a nearby forest and some exploiting the disorder to cross into the Russian zone. In the commotion David and Henryk lost each other, never to meet again…”

Noah tells the story of how his family became separated during the Holocaust, how some were murdered by the Nazis while others, unbeknownst to each other, managed to survive, and how the families reconnected after almost seven decades.

In Sefardi-accented Hebrew, "Kehos" would be pronounced "Kehat".

In this record it definitely says Kehos Mandel - with the H after the K. Although it's spelled differently than the Hebrew Kehos, in Hebrew there are no vowels, and in this record there is the vowel O between the H and the S, I still believe it's the Hebrew name Kehos.
