What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?

How do I access the Group’s webpage?

Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.

Suggestions in determining home shtetl

I have not been able to determine the home shtetl of my "Levitsky/Lewicki" co-hort despite years of trying. The sole documentary clue I have is Hyman Levitsky's 1909 passenger manifest citing "Neustat". I know we have substantial endogamy with the Nevitsky/Novitskie co-hort from Lyubcha/Lubtsch and Negnevici.
In the 1901 UK Census, Hyman, who lived in Manchester UK from 1898-1910 as a boot-maker, seems to assert he was Prussian/German, which led me to research Neustat-Shaki, Lithuania (now known as Kudirkos Naumiestis). I was unable to find any Levitskys in JewishGen research documents. Hyman's sole shtetl born daughter, Lillian Levitsky (who married Harry Novitsky in Detroit in 1915--continuing endogamy), asserted a birthplace of Minsk in a 1938 marriage license to a 2nd husband. Harry Novitsky was born in Lyubcha. It has been suggested that "Neustat" might be Novagrudek---but, again, I have found nothing regarding Levitskys in Revision Lists or other database documents. I second (or is it now 3rd?) Bela Huber (also goes by his Hebrew name, Baruch) for Western Ukraine. Among his other skills, he's multi-lingual - English, Ukrainian and Hungarian with a bit of Hebrew too.

My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Kvas, and I have seen thru JewishGen that it can be spelled a variety of ways when translating to English, including Koz.

I am trying to determine the town where my great grandmother Esther Lavine and family emigrated from, when they came to Trenton, New Jersey about 1893. Here is what I know about their origins: The father Simon Lavine (abt 1840 – 1923) stated in the 1920 US census that he was from Minsk. On that same page, others listed their place of origin as Kovna, Vilna, Grodno, etc, so it appears they were asked what gubernia they were from (thanks to the enumerator Mrs. Koplowitz, who must have asked in Yiddish). The only other information about the family is the 1917 Army draft card for their son Charles Lavine (born about 1885), who wrote ‘Ligia’ in Russia as his birthplace. He was probably 8 years or so old when he came to the US and was about 32 when he filled the card out. So, what town in the Minsk gubernia might ‘Ligia’ refer to? I’ve tried the Jewishgen town finder, but without much success.

I'm not going to say much in the reply, but Thanks for your detailed and courteous reply posts, Brooke Schreier Ganz -- explaining in more detail what your organization is asking for -- and why. : )
(As I have mentioned, I have been working with the National Archives Catalog online (nearly completely on materials having absolutely nothing to do with my own family, and almost-as-completely having nothing to do with immigration) -- and I have also been a paid subscriber to (I am currently one) to Ancestry.com; I have noticed that while cards related to the naturalization of 2 of my great-grandparents (my father's mother's parents -- the Halperins ("Gelperin" at Ellis Island in 1916) ) are available in the Catalog, quite a few other Federal court documents and immigration documents (actually, the ones with the most information -- including the naturalization document which told me the place that my maternal grandfather (Kornhauser) had come from as a boy in 1913) are totally *not* visible in the Catalog. I think that I did not realize that this had something to do with contracts/licensing between Ancestry.com and NARA as "partners". ) Thanks for educating me a bit. [Smile.] (And Good Luck.) Ethan W. Kent in New York City (mostly researching Paat/Pat/Patt/Pate (emigrated from Bialystok (now in Poland) , Kornhauser (emigrated from Turka (now in Ukraine) and (it seems) Stefkowa (husband seems to have claimed 1 town (Stefkowa), and (later-emigrating) wife and children another (Turka) ) , Gelperin/Halperin (emigrated from Vilna (today's Vilnius, Lithuania) ), and Kantor (seemingly emigrated from Podolia guberniya; probably from Bratslav (now in Ukraine) ) PS: I gather from another thread from JewishGen that New York City government has proposed rules for use of the New York City Municipal Archives which could drive out all but the richest users who might wish to consult New York City records (including birth, marriage, and death records) related to genealogy; as someone who used these records a few years ago and was grateful to *not* have to pay (relatively-speaking) "an arm and a leg" for the privilege (?) of seeing these records, I sympathize with Reclaim the Records's dismay at these new proposals (which I fear may end up leaving the *very few* staffers at the Archives left more to themselves (not visited by researchers, physically) than they were when I was there. Ed: I cannot help directly, but I am aware of contemporary JOEL family from Inowroclaw -- Simon JOEL and his wife Caroline ARONSOHN who had at least two children: Selma ( b.1865, Inowroclaw) and Arthur (b.1869, Inowroclaw). Selma has descendants, some of whom may still be in Australia. Jacob and Simon seem like they could have been contemporaries, unless Joel and Dora arrived in the US with adult children.

Hello all. I would appreciate any help in finding an date and location of death for my great uncle Otto Seelig. He was born 25 May 1879 in Posen/Poznan. He is the eldest son of Emil Seelig and Recha/Rebekka Katz Seelig. His siblings are Paul and Ernst Seelig. The Seeligs moved to Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin in 1900. I've indentified a 1917 marriage for Otto to Josephine Lemmen, in Berlin, a subsequent divorce and another marriage in 1928 to a Berta Pauline Annis, also in Berlin. I have been unable to find any other sources of information after the 1928 marriage. I would like to find information regarding his death or possible relocation. Thank you for any assistance.

I use the "Central Database of Shoah Victims". If you find a likely match, click on that person's name and you'll probably find their spouse, possibly father, where they lived, and occupation. If you find Pages of Testimony, you may learn more.
