Dear Genners,

Just discovered  on JRI-PL that my late grandfather Chiel Jakub ROSNER had a brother called Markus ROSNER who died in Tarnow in 1934 at the age of 75. I do not find  anything else about him.

His parents were Rubin ROSNER and Malka PERLBERG. If it rings a bell I would like to hear about it.

Thanks

Re: "Unehelichen"/Illegitimacy: applied to mother or child? #germany

You don't say whether the record actually gives the name of the child Regina, which is usually the case in Pfalz birth records. . As quoted, I agree that uneh;lich means unmarried, and I take it, also that Karolina's ,father's name was Isaak. Is Regina also given a surname, in  the record,  I wonder, which would be an indication of her  father's idemtity?

families left out of 1793 Czech Jewish census #austria-czech #general

Every census misses some folks.  I'm trying to get a sense of how many
people were missed in the 1793 Czech Jewish census.

If you know of a family (individuals are trickier, so I'm focused on
families) that was missed by the 1793 census, could you drop me a note
describing how you know the family existed and where they lived?

Thanks!

Dear Joan,

(1) in the case of Geni public surface there exist 'my family' but not exist 'my tree'

(2) it is a positive act to add joining family details to the tree. If you find a mistake in the added information, you can correct it, or negotiate it with the partner.

(3) to delete family branches from other people's family just because you don't like to see it is explicitly a brutal intervention against another partner's activity -- a much more severe error in the collaboration, than your supposed harm you complain about.

Can anyone tell me about the given name Chashele - for someone who was born in 19th century Lithuania.  Is it Yiddish, corresponding to a Hebrew name?  Seems to refer in my family to my grandfather's sister Ray. I don't know if she was maybe Rochel Chashele?

Descendants of Rav Chaim of Volozhin #belarus

Nancy Roberts

Hello,

There is a small possibility that Rav Chaim ITZKOVITZ of VOLOZHIN was
my fifth great-grandfather. If the connection is correct, it is
through his daughter, Esther, and granddaughter, Beile Raske
FRIED/FRIEDLAENDER. I am trying to find out whether Beile Raske had a
son named Yehuda Lev, who took or had the surname LAFFER. If so, did
he have a daughter named Musha Beile, known as Bessie in English? She
married Samuel MULWITZ, my great-grandfather.

In other words:
> Rav Chaim ITZKOVITZ of VOLOZHIN
>> Esther ITZKOVITZ FRIED/FRIEDLAENDER
>>>Beile Raske HALEVI
>>>>Yehuda Lev LAFFER
>>>>>Mushe Beile (Bessie) LAFFER MULWITZ

I have searched JewishGen and Geni.com so far (including the geni.com
listings for "The Unbroken Chain"), but I haven't found any
information about Beile's children, other than her daughter Sarah. Any
assistance would be most appreciated.

Thank you,

Nancy Roberts

Reclaim The Records is going after EVERY SINGLE DIGITIZED RECORD at the New York City Municipal Archives, to put them all online, for free public use #usa #records

Asparagirl

Reclaim The Records is once again taking on the New York City Municipal Archives, but this time we're asking for ALLLLL THEIR RECORDS. All of them.

We want every historical New York City birth, marriage, and death record. Every scan of an old will or deed or tax assessment list or military recruit list. Every everything! We're going to get them and then put them all online for free, for everyone to use. No fees, no restrictions.

We're sick of the Archives' illegal and immoral "licensing" and "permissions" con job restricting public access to historical public records. We're mad that they're continually ignoring the people and patrons they're supposed to be serving.

And so, we just filed a big brand new Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request with the city, and you can read all about it here, in very copious detail:

This would mean that all of the genealogy websites you know and love, both commercial and non-profit, large and small, as well as individual researchers or teachers or journalists or anybody, would finally have access to download and re-upload and re-publish every single historical New York City vital record, for free. Millions and millions of them! And unlike the Archives, we won’t have any dumb “Mother, May I?” permission slips or shady licensing fees to line our pockets. It’s all gonna be free, forever.

We're also going to be going after much of the Archives' microfilm holdings, and eventually some of their never-before-scanned-or-photographed paper and book holdings. And early next year, we're planning on launching a groundbreaking kind of new lawsuit against the agency, asking to get genealogists' money back, for all the "licenses" they've had to pay out for years, for the use of old public domain records that the Archives has never owned and will never own. More details about that are forthcoming on our website.

Enjoy! :-)

Rabbi Joe KATZOFF-Israel (Givatayim) #israel #usa

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Several months ago I was informed that 30 years ago there was a Rabbi
Joe KATZOFF living in Givatayim or Petach Tikva , Israel. It was most
likely as my brother who is a Rabbi and lived in P.T. 30 years didn"t
hear of him. It seems he was a relative of my late uncle Pincus
KATZOFF (lastly of New Rochelle, N.Y.) and therefore mine too.

Does anyone know this Joe KATZOFF .?

With dozens of posts on this topic and strong opinions, it's clear that
we are not going to agree.  However, one of the forum guidelines is
civil discourse, and I'm sorry that at least one abusive post has
slipped past the moderators.

It's fine to point out Geni's shortcomings; bashing each other --
especially in a message sent to all -- is out of line.

I am in complete agreement with Dr. Blumsohn, and I share his chagrin at the offensive and disrespectful comments directed at him by a previous poster. Further, that previous poster's remarks that geni is the "best platform to combat" the propagation of errors, and is superior in that regard to other platforms such as Ancestry and My Heritage, posit an irrelevant comparison. The issue is not whether geni is better than other platforms; it's whether it's advisable to put one's family tree on geni. His assertion that geni allows for the discovery and propagation of errors is belied by the actual experiences of several other posters to this thread, including me. Simply put, one who puts a tree on geni loses control over its contents.

searching for parents of Nathan HAASE #general

George Fogelson

Searching for the names of parents of Nathan HAASE (1838-1912 Berlin)

My great great uncle Nathan HAASE was born 5 May 1838 and died January
3, 1912 in Berlin. He lived in Konigsberg and Wormditt, East Prussia.
I would like suggestions on how to find the names of his parents. One
of his sons was the famous social democrat Hugo Haase who was shot on
the steps of the Reichstag in 1919 and died a few days later.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Searching for Spector Families #ukraine #usa

WALTER SPECTOR

Hi Genners,

I am searching the Spector family from Zaslav Russia (Ukraine). Some Spectors settled in Woodbine NJ and then went to Philadelphia. Other Spector families settled in the Boston, Haverhill and Chelsea areas in Massachusetts. My brick wall is the connection between the two Spector families. There are a number of individuals with the same given names.

In addition, there is a connection between the Spector and Greenstein families from the same locations. There were marriages bewteen the Spectors and Greensteins. My ggrandfather was a Spector and my ggrandmother was a Greenstein. My great uncle married a Greenstein Haverhill, Mass. His cousin married a sister from the same family.

Any help or conversation would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a repository of names of people who can assist with getting local records? #general #records

YaleZuss@...

I suspect the point of the question is whether there is a site somewhere that researchers can use to identify people like Sally Bruckheimer and others who have been helpful, including some who have answered queries I have sent to the group.  If there were such a site, and it matched "experts" to areas of expertise, it would get heavy use, by-passing the hit-or-miss nature of posting here.

Looking for tombstone to take pictures at Har Hazeitim cemetery, Mount Olives, Jerusalem, Israel #israel #photographs

sadror@...

Is there anyone familiar with the cemetery in Jerusalem, Israel called Har Hazeitim cemetery, Mount Olives?

I am looking for two people: Yeshaya Leib Kivelewitz and his wife Shoshana Feige Reisel nee Greenberg Kivelewitz. A family member recalls them being buried around in the Lubavitcher section on the South side. I do not have the dates of their death. I would estimate they were born around 1865-1870.

I dont have much information on the Greenberg family side.

I was told for years that Shoshana and Sonia are sisters. This is not possible because of their age difference.

I have Sonia's birth information: January 28, 1894 in Nova Alekandrovsk, Lithuania.

According to Sonia’s marriage certificate, her father’s name is Mosche Greenberg and mother's name is Tauve Mesmik. . I am trying to get a picture of Shoshana Kivelewitz’s tombstone in Jerusalem, Israel to verify her father’s name on it to see if it matches with all the documents.

We also discovered new information that no one mentioned to me over the years and I didn’t find it in any newspapers. We knew that Sonia Greenberg married to Harry William Penn and they have two sons Arthur Penn and Irving Penn. I learned that she remarried in 1940 to Meyer Helfand so we were able to complete Sonia’s Family Tree. Thanks to the Facebook page of Jewish Genealogy group that gave me this missing puzzle piece!

Shoshana and Yeshaya have 2 children: my grandfather Yechiel Michel Kivelewitz who was born in 1894 and died in 1961.  Yechiel has a sister Golda nee Kivelewitz Rothman who was born in 1900 and died in 1977. They both were born in Lubatch, Russia. Yechel is buried in Segula Cemetery, Petah Tikva. Golda is buried at Har Hazeitim.

This is a second marriage for Yeshaya with Shoshana. Yeshaya's first wife is Itta Edith and they have 3 children: Breina Kalowitz, David Yitzchak Kalowitz, Frayda Gittel nee Kivelewitz Dvorkas.

I have a DNA match with Dara on Ancestry - we never met each other and she knew about her grandfather Chaim Greenberg from her mother. Her mother is an only child and deceased. Chaim is also from Nova Alekandrovsk and born in 1875. His wife was Cecilia Feinberg. They settled in Philadelphia around the 1910's. Dara knows nothing about Chaim's Greenberg Family.

I SUSPECT that all 3 are siblings: Mosche, Chaim, and Shoshana. And Sonia and Chaim are first cousins.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Quite - to Jeffrey Herrman and the first part of Ari's note. Did anyone else in this thread receive a bombardment of spam messages from Geni yesterday, supposedly under the name of a "Randol Schoenberg" as well as random requests to join trees from the same username.

Weird, and sad. What has genealogy (or something that purports to be genealogy) come to.

According to a poster in this thread I have no knowledge (or insufficient knowledge of) genealogy - what strange and dare I say ignorant and abusive a comment -- perhaps reflecting the same philosophy Geni applies. Really no way to argue a position.

My concerns about GENI have naught to do with either privacy or religious rituals- I simply don't care.  However, I am deeply disturbed by free-wheeling, often undocumented additions to trees which are posted without restriction.  But GENI is useful in two ways: (1) to get  hints (sometimes weird posts are accurate) (2) to get names of the people who posted- sometimes they are amenable to discussion vis a vis their sources.  But about the LDS- they have done wonderful work in obtaining and filming records as well as in preparing finding aids. We owe them, bigtime   If they want to pray over us, well- be my guest !

Hello,
I would appreciate some help with translating the attached death record of Icko Mejer SHEKHTMAN d.1866 in Wisznice. The index on JRI-Poland gives his parent's first names. I am hoping to learn his mother's maiden name, and a spouse's name, if listed.  It is Akta 2.

I asked for evidence that Geni is producing progressively more accurate genealogies rather than progressively more inaccurate ones, as the anecdotal evidence of these posts suggests.  Being told that this discussion is like a “religious war” does not advance the search for truth.
