1930 census - invented people #general #records #usa

The 1930 U.S. census lists three children in my (HERSHKOWITZ) family that never actually existed. They are listed at ages 4yrs, 2 yrs and 6 months with the youngest named Dave Jr, after the head of that household, who was living. That naming is not even remotely possible in my family.

The question is: does anyone have a similar finding, or an explanation of who would invent  the census entries, and why would they do it?

Re: Viewmate Russian translation request #translation #poland #names

Hi Michele,
The last name is Хитрянский, which corresponds to Khitryanskiy.  Letter "я" is different than letter "а" - a different letter and represents sound, that is close to word "yeah" or "yard" and is frequently transcribed as "ya".
You can use Google Translate to get it to pronounce the name correctly.  The trick is to type "Khitryanskiy" into the English language window on the left side, then select Russian as the translation language.  Then click on the speaker icon on the Russian side.  It pronounces it 2 different ways - normal and slowed down.

Here is a link directly to this translation:

The translation of the record on ViewMate said that the Russian language doesn't have letter H.  I don't know why I keep seeing this on JG, but that's not correct at all. Russian letter X corresponds to English language H, just like Russian letters Л and Д correspond to English language letters L and D, respectively.  It is literally in the record being translated.

Kenneth Ryesky

I am participating as a proofreader in the Israel Genealogy Research Association's project to index the 1938 German Jerusalem Consulate contact cards.  The penmanship on many of the cards presents problems, so it is often necessary for me to verify the indexed information via pre-existing external sources, most notably the JewishGen databases.

I have had various cards where the subject (or the subject's father) was a male named Saly or Sally.  More often than not, it proves to be Salomon or Solomon.

[Rose, a vital genealogical event has further impeded my progress with the latest batch you gave me; my wife and I are now compelled to go up North to meet our new granddaughter, who arrived slightly ahead of schedule this past Shabbat.].

Michele Lock

I'd like a translation of the following 1883 birth record (male #51, 2nd entry) from Bialystock:

In particular, I'd like to know the name of the father, and also the likely pronunciation of his surname.

For the mother, I'd like to know if her surname is shown, or if it is her patronymic shown.

This is the French naturalisation of my great-grand-uncle Joseph MATELEVITCH. I can read everything except the name of the town where his father was born in 1804 (bottom right). It looks like NARODNE but there is no such place. He was a cantonist in the Czarist Army. Please help!

In particular what disturbs me is the fact that many people enter someone's wife with the surname of her husband rather than her maiden name. How the names are displayed depends on your personal display preferences.  Geni is extremely flexible so it is designed to accommodate all sorts of styles of genealogy.

Under Account Settings, go to Name Preferences.

I have taken a look at the page - thanks.

I can see that there are 115 managers and one curator.

Why is it that under the "sources" tab, no sources are listed?

Joyaa please look under the Media tab on the Maharal's profile.  There you will find (on the right side) 18 documents.  Click on "View all" and you will find them, including the most recent scholarship at

You can also view the 8 public Discussion on the profile, including this one.

As I have said, and as I know from my own experience 11 years ago, there is a very steep learning curve for Geni.  There's a lot more to it than you will notice when you first come to it, if you are only looking for things you are familiar with from other websites.
