Re: Hancz/Hantz #usa

The Becker's Email

familysearch has birth record transcriptions for:
Gisela Homs or Horns, b. 11 Sept. 1904 parents Benjamin Homs and Rossie Mowkoroz
Sadie Hans b. 28 Jan. 1907 parents Bennie Hans, Rosie Markowitz
what appear to be the birth records for Isadore and Gertrude  have  Rose's maiden name as Hershkowitz:
Isidor Hanz b. 19 Oct. 1905 parents Bennie Hanz, Rosie Hershkkowitz
Gertrude Haantz b. 26 Aug. 1909 parents Benjamin Haantz , Rosie Hershkowitz.

According to the above records, originals may be viewed at a family history center.  Some public  libraries have become "registered" as family history centers and you can access at the library; so check w/ your local library.

I would note that the 1910 and 1920 censuses give 1903 as the year of Rose's immigration,  not the 1904 Ben put on his naturalization papers.  1903 is consistent w/ having Gisela  born in Spet. 1904.  Also, I tried to find a ships' manifests for both Bennie and Rose for arrival in NY and could not find using stevemorse.  You might obtain both Rose's and Bennie's death certificates to see what is given for their place of birth and for Rose, the names of her parents which would give her maiden name.

ViewMate translation request - Russian / Suggestions re Jewish records of Poland #poland

Stanley Diamond

This request for "translations" of Jewish records from Pułtusk, Poland is a good opportunity
to review the JRI-Poland Phase 3 mission to fully extract all the records in our database.
By having detailed "extracts" such as these two on the researcher's list - rather than translations -
it is possible to collate the data from records into a convenient searchable file.

This is also an opportunity to re-post a message from 27th December with the following:
"I am pleased to make the following announcement.
Under the JRI-Poland Phase 3 initiative to fully extract all records in our database,
all surviving records of Pultusk in the Polish State Archive branch in Pultusk are now
fully extracted.  For information on Phase 3 and an overview of other JRI-Poland
activity please see:
In addition, the years of more current records in the town civil records office, not subject
to Polish laws protecting personal data have now been scanned by JRI-Poland and
are also fully extracted.
For more information, write to pultusk@..."
In accordance with JRI-Poland policy, the updated and expanded Pułtusk data can only be
added to the JRI-Poland database when the Phase 3 record-extraction project has been fully
funded.  Researchers with an interest in their family's records from Pułtusk are eligible to
obtain advance information from the file by supporting the data entry project with qualifying
contributions to this project.

Khust is the current name of the place that was formerly Huszt, Maramaros, Hungary. When searching for older records more likely to have good results if you use the Hungarian name. Also, do a wider search for GRUNVALD records by entering Maramaros or Huszt or Csorna in Any Field.

Hello All:
I am trying to track down information regarding my aunt's first husband, known as "Costica" Caufman.  His formal given name might be Constantin.  He was married to my aunt, Sali ( Sara) Sternberg, and lived in Bucharest Romania.  I believe that they divorced some time before 1955,when my aunt came to live with us in Canada.  I am wondering if anyone has any information regarding marriages/divorces in Bucharest in the 1940s-50s.

Re: Identify military uniform and medals #photographs #general #germany

Robert Murowchick

Great photo! As others have noted, the top medal looks like an example of the WWI German Iron Cross (different versions were produced, and it is hard to see any details, but it likely looks like the photo attached).

The lower medal is harder to make out, but it seems to be the Friedrich August Cross 2nd Class from the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. According to various websites, this medal was established in September 1914 for all ranks and was the Grand Duchy’s equivalent of the Prussian Iron Cross for bravery

Thank you, Shlomo. This looks like terrific work, and I'm grateful to have this new information.

Your second link seems as if it may be broken, however. When I click on ernia/Mogilevgub.htm  I get taken to an error message.

Good luck, and it's generous of you to share such substantial work with all of us.

Seeking information on Josef Lubasz (Lubasch) family #records #poland

I have never been able to find the marriage certificate of one of my grandfather’s brothers: Josef Lubasz (or Lubasch) born January 12 1897 in Krakow married to Raia Lerner. The only information I have is that he survived the war in Warsaw, but Raia and their two sons perished during the Holocaust. Where can I locate their sons birth certificate or any information of when they were born and their names?

I would appreciate any help
Irene Lubasch

Dr John MICHAEL inscription on watch. #general

Robyn Dryen

Dear Genners

AJGS has received an enquiry from a watch collector about an inscription on a pocket watch in his possession. It was bought in England about 30 years ago and the watch is thought to date from around 1900.

The inscription reads: For Dr John Michael in memory of his grandfather. Who so missed his birth by minutes, and is much beloved as a great Zionist. He and his son fought so valiantly, and for the Zionists.

It is not clear whether the reference is to a paternal grandfather and therefore a MICHAEL (or variant), or to an unnamed maternal grandfather. Nor is it certain that these are Jewish Zionists.

My question is whether anyone has a Dr John Michael in their tree with ancestors involved in the early days of Zionism.

Any assistance would be welcome.
