Re: Cape Verde Jewish roots? #dna #sephardic

Michael Greenfield

Hello David,

DNA results work as well as they do for Ashkenazim because this group appears to have
passed through a genetic bottleneck at its founding, approx. 1100 years ago, probably
somewhere in northeast France.  That is, Ashkenazim bear an unmistakable genetic
signature.  Similar events are not well identified in the general Sephardic population, and I
suspect that DNA would not be helpful.  An exception would be kohen or levite ancestry and
markers in the y chromosome, but these would have had to be maintained through an unbroken
male lineage over 5 centuries.  Somewhat unlikely.  If written history, e.g. baptismal certificates, is
available, that might be a lead, particularly if one could establish a link to known
converso families (16th century).  Unlike Ashkenazim, Sephardim had family names extending
back many, many centuries.      Michael Greenfield       Tours, FR

Finally I've found Abramkowo on the map and on the list.
Coordinates for this place are.
62.08625389606497, 45.09560011268705
It is situated by the river Dwina. So it is likely that Anna traveled also by this river.
This spec-village was intended only for the Jews. In 1941 there were 350 of them.
The closest river stop for the boats was Jagrysz (10 km away). The closest municipality (Sielsowiet) was Fedkow (10 km). The closest train station was Kotlas (150 km away).
This spec-village was the only one in the region that was not assigned to the forest industry, but to the river transportation (SURP).
The map shows the spec- villages in Archangielsk Oblast.
White squares show the villages for the Jews and the dark squares for the Poles and others.

Thanks to everyone who replied with offers of help.  The headstone was available on the JewishData site, and a couple of members sent it to it me. Alas this is not my great uncle.

Joyce Eastman

I want to thank everyone for their input regarding the family of Samuel Unger as it might relate to my Rufeisen family; and to Stanley Diamond, Executive Director of JRI-Poland for the information regarding the current data entry of records from the Polish State Archives as well as the Bielsko-Biala Civil Records Office for the Bielsko-Biala area regarding birth, marriage and death records.  I look forward to reviewing these records once the data entry is completed.

I should note that I did hire Jacek Proszyk years ago to do research for me regarding my Rufeisen and Scheier families from the Bielsko-Biala area.  He was quite helpful and also provided me with a copy of his book, although there was no CD with the English translation at that time.  In any case, he pointed out the pages in the book that referenced my families and I was able to glean information from that to confirm the information he had provided to me.

They seem fine, but each company has its own reference populations and own algorithms.  For a while FTDNA had me with a small percentage of North American.  They have since removed it and I am back at 100% AJ.  The trace percentages are often just noise REGARDLESS of the company.  All of the companies use a least squares technique.  The fit the biggest piece and remove that data then they fit the next biggest etc.  By the time that you are down to the trace regions there is not much data left to fit and wild results may occur.

Re: Balti vs Balta... what is connection #bessarabia #ukraine

In Romanian baltă is a Lake or Swamp. balti is the plural.  Balta in Podolia was Russian from ca 1800 except 1941-44 when administered by Romania as part of Transnistria. Also from 1924 to 1929 was the capital of the Moldovan Republic. Balti is in Bessarabia and was part of Romanian Moldova Principality to  1812 and from 1918 to 1940, 1941-1944.

Re: Atlantic City, New Jersey - Looking for Ann and Bertha Friedman #records #usa #events

Elizabeth Handler

My husband is from Ventnor City, just south of Atlantic City and I've done a bit of research there. There are a few city directories for Atlantic City on in their U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995 (1935, 1938, 1941, 1946, 1950, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957).
The Atlantic City Free Public Library ( has past issues of the Atlantic City Press on microfilm which I don't believe is digitized online anywhere. Perhaps you can reach out to the library and see if someone there can help you. Also, according to their website, they have additional city directories.
Could they have been buried in Philadelphia? I know my husband's extended family had and continues to have many relatives in Philly and there are quite a few Jewish cemeteries there.
Best of luck!

Cape Verde Jewish roots? #dna #sephardic

My son's partner is from Cape Verde.  She believes that her family has Jewish ancestors, and the presence of Jews in Cape Verde is well documented.  My questions is whether DNA tests could help her determine this.  My own family is Askenazi, and the DNA results from Ancestry are sound, but I don't know anything about the results for Sephardi Jewish roots.  Any advice would be welcome.

Many thanks.

Photo request from Mt. Carmel Cemetery #photographs

I am hoping that someone would be able to take a photo of a headstone for me in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Glendale, NY.  It is for David Stern, location 1-E-30-H-4.  I believe this is my great uncle, Rabbi David Stern, who died in 1955 and for whom I am named.  I would be willing to pay a modest sum for your time and trouble.

Many thanks in advance.

I have found Iglicka Chana born 1922, father Szlama,
sent to the spec-village Abramkowo on 13.07.1940 from Bialystok region.
After amnesty she went to the city of Samarkanda ( Republic of Uzbekistan) on 11.09.1941.
There is her personal file in the Archangielsk Archive. (signature AR-T- -4950)
The site for the archive
I heard that it  is necessary to write them in Russian.
I don't know where Abramkowo was. It should be in the Archangielsk region (Oblast), but I don't find it on the list of its spec-villages.
On the list there is Icko Rzezak, born 1914, son of Lejzer
You can search here
The river on which they were traveling had to be Amu Daria. People were put on large barges, many did not survive this flight (diseases, poor nutrition). The end of the flight was in Farab.
By the way my ggfather Jozef Zaremba and one of his daughters were sent to one of the spec-villages in Archangielsk Oblast in February 1940. They lost their lives on the Amu Daria River.

Looking to make contact with ROSEN descendants who came from Szchuchin
around the turn of the previous century. Their name in Europe was
JERUSHALMY and (probably) in the USA changed their family name. At
least one of them was a hebrew teacher in Chicago.

Names among the descendants : BRANSON, SLOTKIN (or SLOTNIK).

Re: Looking for Gussie Deutsch #usa

Michele Lock

You could request the death certificate for Gussie Deutsch from the NY City department of Health, but i believe that a person needs to be a direct descendent of the deceased to do so.

You might have better luck requesting the marriage license for the couple, and the 1901 birth certificate for the first child Helen, from the Luzerne PA county courthouse/Register of Wills-Clerk of the Orphan Court. Though with the pandemic going on, that might take longer to be processed. Those would have the maiden name of Gussie Deutsch, and possibly her birthplace:
