Re: St. Joseph Missouri City Directories. #records

Matt Friedman

Good Morning Everyone,

I sent this response to Felisa, but since there might be other researchers interested in St. Jospeph the response to jer is below.

Asa general note...rabbis tend to be a good source of information about local Jewish communities.  They may not have all the info, but they know where to look and who has knowledge....

Hi Felisa,

I was the rabbi at Temple Adath Joseph in St. Joe from 1995 to 1999.  At one time there was a good sized Jewish population with several active synagogues.  Currently only Temple Adath Joseph remains.  The congregation has a Facebook page.

The St. Jospeh public library has a genealogy page on its website that includes city directories.

There is also a northwest Missouri genealogical society that has a website.

The challenge is the fact of whether or not your ancestors were present when the records were collected.

Good luck with your research.

Rabbi Matt Friedman

My Great Grandfather Wolf Jacobowitz is also buried in Mount Zion, as well as my Kreinik family's Shtetl, Sedziszow Malopolski.

This is why I find genealogy fascinating.
Thank you all for your help and guidance.

Seeking descendants of Genowefa Korc #poland #warsaw

GEORGE MASON

Genowefa Korc was the administrative secretary for my Father's Uncle, Alexander Lorski, during the 1930's, in Warsaw. After the Nazi invasion, she faithfully visited Alexander and his wife in the Warsaw Ghetto, until they died in August of 1942. After the war, she lived in Konstancin-Jeziorna, and died in 1971. I am seeking information on any descendants of Genowefa Korc who may have information on her and her employer, Alexander Lorski.
Thank You,

Thanks, Dan.  I understand that Cape Verdeans have a practice of placing stones on a gravestone when visiting a cemetery, no doubt an influence from Jews who settled in Cape Verde.

Michele Lock

Thinking some more about the surname 'Thirman', it could be Thierman or Thorman, or even Furman or Forman, if the clerk at the courthouse misheard the mother's maiden name.

Viewmate Translation Request -- German #translation #austria-czech

krausj2@...

I've posted a 3-4 sentence news item in German from a Viennese Jewish newspaper/magazine, and I am hoping someone can translate it for me. It's in what I believe is a fraktur font, and I can barely decipher many of the individual letters. The item concerns a distant relative with the surname Holdengraber, but I can't even be certain what the first name is.

It is on ViewMate at the following address:

https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM88783

Please respond via the form provided on the ViewMate image page.

Thanks for whatever you can do to help.

Re: 18th c record from Glogow/Glogau #germany #poland #records

Corinna Woehrl

Hello Frank,

a "Repertorium" is a sort of table of contents/directory for archived files, another German word is "Findbuch". This book gives you a hint on the files that once existed in the city of Glogau on the Jewish part of the city. The documents themselves may not have survived.

The handwriting seems to be from the time indicated, not earlier, yet the first few pages have a special "twist"in the handwriting, maybe the the clerk was brought up/used to writing Polish?
