Hi Madeleine,

You may want to try to consult Professor Heidi Szpek (http://www.jewishepitaphs.org/heidi-m-szpek-ph-d/ ).  While refreshing my memory on her work, I came across this seemingly particularly relevant article of hers (http://www.jewishmag.com/158mag/tombstone_engraver/tombstone_engraver.htm).

Help locating a cemetery in Russia #russia #photographs

E Feinstein

I wanted to please ask everyone's help to locate a cemetery in Russia.

Here is the link on the website Toldot.ru.  The cemetery is called the Solnechnaya Cemetery (Sunny Cemetery)  I have no idea where in Russia this is located and wanted to ask everyone's help to help determine in what city this cemetery is to be found.  I sent a message to the Toldot.ru website but they never responded.  Any ideas?

Re: Maryland cemetery search #usa

A. E. Jordan

Did you try a newspaper search in hopes one of them had an obit? Or try even the online databases of course for cemeteries but also things like Ancestry to see if you can figure out what city they lived in. That might narrow your research. I don't know if you can find the death certificate but they usually show where a person was buried,  Might also try relatives like wives as an extension in case you can not find these men,

That's the usual starting places for finding a grave.

Subject: [JewishGen.org] Maryland cemetery search #usa

Hi everyone,

I have a father, Yehuda Barch that died in 2002 in Maryland and his son Russell Barch that died in 1996 in Maryland.   I do not know where they are buried therefore having a difficult time locating the cemetery name.   There are many cemeteries in that state that I don’t know where to start.   All suggestions where I should begin my search would be appreciated.

Thank you,   Trudy Barch,  FLorida

Re: Searching OGONTZ-OGINZ, Massachusetts, USA #usa

Many of the small, old cemeteries are now managed by the Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts, JCAM, which has a searchable database. I have learned that you must search multiple variations for a name if you find no matches the first time. Below is what I have found. In this case, the photo means the grave is unmarked. I live about 20 minutes from this cemetery and will be happy to obtain photos for the other two on a warmish day.

I suggest you contact The Together Plan, a UK- and Belarus-based charity which helps the local Jews become self-sufficient.  One of their projects is genealogical research.  They have the huge advantage of speaking the local language and Russian, as well as knowing the ways Belarussian bureaucracy works !
Have a look at thetogetherplan.org.uk for more details.

Best of luck,

Re: Name changed in London before coming to US, searching for original name #names

To add to my above response: There was no restriction even after 1919 to informal name changes for non-aliens. That remains the case. In 2020 - it is completely normal and legal for anyone over the age of 16 to start using a new name at any time, and absolutely no registration is required, so long as they are not doing so for a fraudulent or illegal reason. It could be by a completely private Deed.
Using a formal mechanism registered by the state (a Deed Poll) is and remains entirely optional.

Re: tens of thousands members "family trees" in Ancestry #announcements #general #education

Susana Rubin

I have found them too. They have my entire family and they mixed up photos and names. They do not reply when you send them a message. I think they are created by robots. I do not know what is the purpose, but I also find it disturbing. I asked Ancestry and they said if my tree was public they cannot do anything about. Then I made my tree private.

Re: Name changed in London before coming to US, searching for original name #names

In fact I think it depended a lot on "alien" status.

The Alien Restriction act of 1914 was then amended and extended in December 1919.

That placed an obligation on "aliens" to register name changes (personal and business)

The legislation is here

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1919/92/pdfs/ukpga_19190092_en.pdf

Bear in mind when reading that the 1919 legislation particularly was to a considerable extent specifically targeted at Jewish Marxist terrorists operating in and around London and causing considerable mayhem, murders and robberies in furtherance of their cause.

The largest terrorist standoff on British soil remains the siege of Sidney street which resulted from the activities of these individuals who caused so much disrepute to our community and who drove this legislation. An earlier motivation of the Act (of 1914) was motivated by a fear of German spies (German Jews felt compelled to announce their support for Britain in 'loyalty letters' to newspapers).

An alien was I think defined as a non-citizen, and not all Jews would have fallen into that category.

Wolf Garfunkel #usa #poland #galicia

Looking for information about Wolf Garfunkel who came to America from Rzeszow some time after 1857.  Interested in learning about his parents (father was Shmuel) but don't have any information about his mother.  His first wife (my gg grandmother) died in Poland in the 1850s.  We think her name was Malka Bracha, but don't know any more details.  His second wife was Sima Raizel Grinbaum who ultimately came to America with him and her children. Interested in learning about any siblings he may have had. Wolf died in 1886 and is buried in Union Fields Cemetery in Queens.  I'm new at this so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: place in Teleneshty Yizkor book #yizkorbooks

The two towns: Cioceltani mentioned in Gina's response, and Suhuluceni mentioned in my earlier response, are 8.7 kilometers from each other, according to JewishGen loctown. Both are in the vicinity of Teleneshti. So both would be possibilities, albeit Suhuluceni seems to be phonetically closer to the Suhuluceni version that Dale asked about.

Looking for a researcher for records in Romania #bessarabia #records #romania

Marcia Segal

Hello,

I am hoping to find a researcher who can look for records in Romania (birth, marriage, death). One group of records would be from around 1850-1888 (for family who left for the US_, and another from around 1900-1950 (for family who remained in Romania). Guidance welcome.

Sincerely,
Marcia Segal

Re: Expedited Death Certificate Order from Albany, NY #usa

Robert Avner

To Arnon & others

Unfortunately obtaining genealogy death certificates is considered the lowest priority by the New York State Dept. of Health. Maybe Reclaim The Records can get involved. For some unexplicable reason the Department of Health is in charge of dispensing vital records no matter how old they are & never transfers them to the New York State Archives as other states do to their archives. All the NY State Archives have pertaining to vital documents are indexes. The rediculous length of time it takes has nothing to do with the Pandemic. When the NY State Driver’s Licenses were changed to Real ID the delay was attributed to people applying for copies of their birth certificate. What it really is & I was told by the person who answered the phone when they still had a customer phone line is they have one person working on doing genealogical records for the entire state. It is much better to apply to the town or village clerk where the person died. Of course if you can’t find that out as I couldn’t in a particular case it took from June 2018 to November 2020.

What part of Maryland did they live?  Did they belong to a Temple?   Maryland has several Jewish cemeteries but you could narrow it down by the town they lived in.  With a couple of calls, you could probably locate the cemetery.   Find A Grave is also worth checking.  I can possibly help with suggestions on cemeteries to call.  You can contact me at RDeutsch@...

Re: Name changed in London before coming to US, searching for original name #names

Jill Whitehead

Before WW1 name changes were informal. Use of name changes by Deed Poll started to come in during WW1 (e.g. my Gutenberg's of Sheffield became Graham in 1915). This was not a legal requirement for all until about the 1920s.  So a name change in 1905 may be too early to be official.
