Invitation to the Holocaust Memorial Day Event - 27 January, 14:00-15:00 GMT #announcements #events #holocaust #names #unitedkingdom

Klavdija Erzen

Dear All,

On behalf of the Jewish History Association of South Wales, I wish to invite you to a talk for the Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January at 14:00 GMT.

We have been researching the lives of people listed on the Holocaust Memorial Tablet in Cardiff Reform Synagogue. This Tablet commemorates relatives of the Congregation who were murdered during The Holocaust, but whose final resting places are unknown. There are 102 names in total, and we have been fortunate enough to find information on all but one of them.

We feel it is important that these individuals are not just names on a board, but that they are recalled as fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers; they had families and jobs and communities. We feel that the whole of their lives should be remembered and celebrated, not just the manner of their deaths.

For many of the volunteers doing the research, it has been both a rewarding and very emotional experience.

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, three volunteers will be sharing their experiences with you in our first ever webinar at 14:00 GMT on 27 January 2021.

You can register here for the event:

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

With kind regards,

Klavdija Erzen

Mosciska researcher? #galicia

Hello.  I just came across this information on
I am extremely interested in finding out if any of my ancestors (Dizian, Dycian, or similar) are included in any of these land or other records during the 1800s.  It appears as though none of these are indexed yet?  What would you suggest in regards to getting access to them?  Or, do you have a suggestion on how to find/hire a researcher who is an expert in these records?  Thanks!!
Separately, do you know if there are any Mosciska land records from the early 1900s?

I've come up with a way to search Montefiore Cemetery by society name, but it's a bit cumbersome.  Click on this link, or copy and paste it into your browser:

This will give you the names of all people buried in the Sobolivker Chevra Society plot, through "Isidore Cohen."

You won't be able to get to subsequent pages using the links at the bottom of the page.  To advance pages, modify the link above by changing "Page 1" to "Page 2," "Page 2" to "Page 3," and so on, until you get to the last page.

Small % of DNA results are often noise. Your 4th ggrandmother would only have 1.5% of your DNA, and it might well be noise. You will have to do genealogy research to find out about her - and you already know her name, so it wouldn't be a huge project.

Live- Streaming Media Installation

We have a lot planned for 2021. We’re starting the new year with a
media installation for our commemoration initiative #everynamecounts,
which is dedicated to the victims of the Nazis. From January 21 to 27
we will present an art installation developed by the production studio
Urbanscreen based on documents from the Arolsen Archives.

The media installation and live stream will bring the #everynamecounts
project to the public. Every day from 5 to 10 p.m., the installation
will be projected onto the entire façade of the French Embassy at
Pariser Platz 5 in Berlin and streamed live worldwide.

The impressive and moving installation is part of our digital
commemoration project and also announces the next step in
#everynamecounts. On January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance
Day, we are taking our crowdsourcing initiative to the next level. To
create a digital memorial to the victims of National Socialism and
make the information in our documents available worldwide, we want to
reach even more people internationally and motivate them to support
our cause.

In the campaign week around January 27, 2021, individuals from many
different countries, as well as organizations, companies and their
employees, and schools and universities will show their solidarity by
spending time and helping to record names. You can also participate in
#everynamecounts – set some time aside during the activity week and
tune in to the live stream of the media installation. You can view it
on our website. We have already posted some short videos there as a

Kalwaria, Poland #poland #general

Marcia Segal

Hello all,

I'm trying to understand an aspect of Polish history. In 1883 the town of Kalwaria, in Poland, was "degraded" (as one web site puts it), until 1919. What would this mean for the Jewish population? According to a passenger list, three of my relatives came to the US from Kalwaria (if the document is to be believed) in 1892. This suggests to me that, once they had the money, they got out because life was difficult for them as Jews. Does anyone have insights regarding this or any town that became "degraded?" Many thanks.

Re: importing/transferring/sharing historical records between services? #general

Eva Lawrence

Firstly, you really need to discriminate between historical sources and indexed information.  Secondly,  what appear to be historical records have sometimes been rewritten in the archive where they are now found, and photos of say, a gravestone, could be of a later redesign. So the source and date of acquisition of your record is just as important as the information it contains, and transferring from one place to another without further input is really dangerous, quite apart from any privacy or copyright issues.  I've taken and filed screenshots for a long time, as the only safe way of avoiding typos in entering dates etc.    Even here I regret that I used to  edit out the date and other context which  might have made it possible to retrieve details I missed earlier, such as a second page.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day January 27, 2021 #announcements #holocaust

Jan Meisels Allen

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is commemorated on January 27th.  January 27, 2021 is the 76th anniversary of  the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration, the ending of World War ll and the ending of the Holocaust.  The theme guiding Holocaust remembrance and education in 2021 is “Facing the Aftermath: Recovery and Reconstitution after the Holocaust”. It focuses on the measures taken in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust to begin the process of recovery and reconstitution of individuals, community, and systems of justice. Integral to the process of reconstitution was the accurate recording of the historical account of what happened before and during the Holocaust. Challenging the denial and distortion of the historical events was interwoven in the processes of recovery and reconstitution. The theme examines the contribution of the responses to the victims of the Holocaust, and of the survivors, to addressing the needs of the contemporary world, and to the historical record of the Holocaust. Against a global context of rising antisemitism and increasing levels of disinformation and hate speech, Holocaust education and remembrance is even more urgent, as is the development of an historical literacy to counter repeated attempts to deny and distort the history of the Holocaust.

Many governments have legislated that January 27 is an annual Holocaust Memorial Day to mark the date as an international day of commemoration to honor the victims of the Holocaust. The day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on November 1, 2005. The Resolution establishing January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day urges every member nation of the U.N. to honor the memory of Holocaust victims, and encourages the development of educational programs about Holocaust history to help prevent future acts of genocide.

With the pandemic the following events will be virtual.

There are many other venues that will hold commemoration activities. Please look locally for any activities in your area.

Some countries memorialize the Holocaust on other days, for example, Yom Hashoah in Israel and in the United States is commemorated on the 27th day of Nisan, the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. In Hebrew, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. In 2021 Yom Hashoah is observed on April 9 (starting sunset the evening before).

L Levy

What a generous offer! I've been looking for relatives who fled Lida and Vilna for France.  I only have two first names, the mother Simcha and the daughter Janine. We were told that their last name was Aronovitz. Janine would have been born around 1938, and may have a son named Eli.  Simcha's maiden name would be a variant of Tzgelnitka or Tzgelnitski, and we believe she was born around 1900 in Lida. Thanks you!

Looking for inform on Marguerite (Margaretha) HAUPTMANN, HOFFMAN, OFFMAN, or KAUFMAN b. 1698 Baden-Wurttemberg, Gemany d. 1760 in Picardie, France married to Martin Mayer (Mair, Meyer) #france

TheUglyChick <crystal.demars@...>

I am working on my genealogic history from a genetic standpoint as well as my family tree. I have had my DNA analyzed via 23andMe and was surprised to learn that I have a small percentage of Ashkenazi Jewish dna. I have been looking into my family tree and believe I have found the ancestor that it may have come from, but there is not much information on her.
My 7th Great Grandmother was named Margueritte (Margaretha) HAUPTMANN, HOFFMAN, OFFMAN, or KAUFMAN b. 1698 Baden-Wurttemberg, Gemany d. 1760 in Picardie, France married to Martin Mayer (Mair, Meyer). I cannot find any information on her line. I would like to connect with anyone with any information on her family.
When I researched Jewish families in Wurttemberg, there were only very few in the area at the time and they were not allowed to settle there permanently.
Martin Mayer passed away in 1752.
Her son is my 6th Great Grandfather. He was Hantz Jakob Mayer was born about 1715 who died in 10/17/1757 in St. Charles, Louisiana
Any information would be most appreciated.

Adam Cherson

I am in need of any information I can find regarding the Spanish part of the life of Akiva the Elder of Salonika, who according to GENI was born in Spain ca1360 and died in Salonika ca1400 (note: this is well before the Alhambra Decree), because I believe he is part of my own great-grandfather's yDNA ancestral lineage. If there are any Jewish History scholars who can recommend books or a person to consult with, or otherwise point me in a worthwhile direction, I would be most grateful.
