Witnessing Holocaust History

“World ORT, the WE ARE HERE! Foundation, and the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center of Philadelphia have partnered this year to provide an international experience of Holocaust education and remembrance to students around the world. This is an international project that commemorates the Holocaust and also provides opportunities for global Holocaust education, engaging the next generation of learners.

Join us through Zoom (https://zoom.us/j/97948035452) and the HAMEC Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PhilaHAMECon Wednesday, January 27th (9am EST, 2pm London, 10pm Perth) as these three organizations honour International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Experience survivor testimony shared through HAMEC programming to World ORT students, and hear the impact these testimony programs have on students’ understanding of the past, as the programs personalize the Holocaust so that they learn the consequences of racism, ethnic cleansing, and intolerance. The program will conclude with a performance by students of the Partisans’ Song, one of the most powerful songs of resistance and defiance ever written. Today, 80 years on, long after the demise of Hitler’s murderous regime, the Partisans’ Song is now sung worldwide to mark the Jewish spirit of resistance.”

Session Description:

FamilySearch is one of the largest genealogical websites and grows more every day. This presentation will show some of the newest features of FamilySearch and how best to utilize them to find your Jewish ancestors.

About Todd Knowles:

W. Todd Knowles is an accredited Genealogist who specializes in English and Jewish research. For the past 20 years he has been a member of the staff at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, where he currently serves as a Deputy Chief Genealogical Officer. He is past President of the Utah Jewish Genealogy Society (UJGS).

Todd has lectured all over the world and his articles have been widely published. His own genealogical search began at the age of twelve with the desire to find more about his family and grows every day. His quest to find more about his GGGrandfather, a Polish Jew, has led to the creation of the Knowles Collection, six databases that contain the records of the Jewish people. It currently (as of Jan 2020) contains the records of over 1.4 million people.

Translation Needed: Marriage Record #records #translation

amitch1066@...

Hi All,

Would anyone be able to translate the attached document?  The whole record would be nice, but specifically the "Uwaga" column.

Additionally, the parents of the groom, Josef Schaff, are listed with a different surname.  The parents are Solomon and Feige Reize Kaltwasser.  Is there some reason why the groom is listed with a different surname from his parents?  Adoption?  etc.  The bride is mostly definitely from a long Kaltwasser line, so that furthers the mystery.

Thanks in advance!

New book about Oscar Bloch, Swiss-Jewish architect in Stuttgart #germany

Eva Lawrence

My Swiss cousin has just sent me the book she inspired and initiated, about the work of her Swiss-Jewish grandfather, the architect, Oscar Bloch (1881-1837).  Bloch & Guggenheim, Ein Jüdisches Architurbüro on Stuttgart. The partnership was based in Stuttgart and mainly designed houses for the Jewish comunity there. The author, Dietrich W Schmidt is an architectural historian, and has meticulously catalogued and described every building and design produced by the firm, whether realised or rejected.
There are photos and plans in every case, as well as informed comments of the transition of Bloch's style from traditional to avant-garde.
Reading the book is to see the history of Jewish  life in Stuttgart, with the restrictions that professionals gradually had to work under, something that my cousin summarises very movingly in her foreword.

Anna Bikont Contact #holocaust #poland

aaran1286@...

Shalom friends,

I am researching my family from Jedwabne, Poland. They were murdered in the 1941 massacre in Jedwabne. As you may know, there is a definitive book on the massacre in the Holocaust, there: THE CRIME AND THE SILENCE by Anna Bikont.

I have purchased a copy of this book. My family is mentioned more than once. I would like to contact Anna Bikont to find out what other records she may have of my family. However, I could not find her email or any details online.

I was wondering if anyone here might know how her email address or other contact details. It will be very helpful for my research.

Thank you.

With very best wishes,

Winitsky/Vinitsky/Chudler from Detroit, Mich.

Steve Pickoltz

Here is an update on my Detroit search.

Besides Winitsky/Vinitsky let me now add Chudler.

The Chudler family consisted of a Lew and Ann who's son married a Lorraine Vinitsky in 1952.  At this wedding, there may have been cousins named Rofsky, also there, one by the name Henrietta.

I also have two 1934 addresses for the Venitsky familys, that I got off old envelopes.  One is 2640 Pregree Ave, the other is for 330 Owens Ave, both in Detroit.  It was hard to read the street names for both.

Maybe with this new info, someone may recognize these famlies.

Re: Russian immigration to the US late 1980s where to look? #russia

Aaron Slotnik

Hi David,

There is a good chance that Jewish Soviet immigrants at that time received assistance from HIAS.  As such, I suggest searching here (https://www.ajhs.org/hias-search) to see if there is a record.  Depending on how closely related you are, HIAS may be able to provide additional information.  If they naturalized, there is a chance you may be able to find a reference to their files on FamilySearch or Ancestry; however, given how recent it is, you may need to submit an index search request to the USCIS genealogy program.

Hopefully this helps and good luck in your search!

Regards,
Aaron Slotnik

Re: Sussman News (1934-1939) digitized and downloadable #announcements #education #lithuania #names #usa

schaffer6896@...

My grandfather was named David Schaffer.  His mother’s name was Reiza or Rose and her maiden name was Sussman or Zisman.  Reiza/Rose parents’ names were Zisu and Shiendla (maiden name Faibish). Zisu’s parents names were Marcu or Mordechai and Sura.  Reiza Sussman/Zisman was probably born sometime between 1844 and 1849. She died in Romania on June 30, 1912.  Reiza had a brother named Barnet Zisman (1860-1913).  Barnet had 2 sons – Nathan and Joshua.  They would have been my grandfather David’s cousins.  Nathan would later marry David’s oldest daughter Charlotte.  So Nathan Zisman was both my first cousin twice removed and my uncle through marriage.

You will do well to contract Yuri Dorn who is excellent. He knows his way around the archives there and is able to speak English well. I have used him as have many others and I recommend him totally.

Looking for a researcher in L'viv to access a record #galicia #records

NTalbot

I am looking for a researcher to access and provide me with copies of the section of a handwritten document that is located in The Stefanyka Libray in Lviv. It is called "The Inventory of Brzozow County" by Jerzy Zanozinski in 1934. The part I am interested in has to do with the old synagogue from Dynow.

We have all poured over those ship manifests recording the arrival of our ancestors on these shores.  However, I have always wondered about ships that may have been lost at sea and along with them, their hopeful passengers.  Can anyone shed any light on this?

Seeking info on Wolfgang KLAPPHOLZ #germany #holocaust

Myra Fournier

Wolfgang KLAPPHOLZ  (born on March 5, 1934 in Magdeburg, Germany) was the son of my uncle Alfred KLAPPHOLZ (born on Oct 18, 1909) and Ilse JORDAN (born on June 19, 1916). Alfred and Ilse divorced about 1943, and because Ilse was not Jewish, she left Wolfgang with Alfred to try to make a new life for herself. Alfred KLAPPHOLZ and his second wife (or companion) Else LECKER (born on April 12, 1912) died in 1944 in a concentration camp. Wolfgang was put in a local orphanage in Magdeburg (I do not know the name) and Ilse visited him occasionally. She finally lost interest in reuniting with him and did not see him again as far as I know. As late as January, 1947 Wolfgang was found living with foster parents Gustav DEHNE and his wife in Magdeburg. Wolfgang was visited in the DEHNE home by his relative Erwin SCHLEIN (and wife), who once was thought would take Wolfgang, but didn’t. HIAS Berlin and the Dutch Red Cross were involved in locating Wolfgang in 1947. They had also been in contact with Wolfgang’s grandmother Johanna (nee SCHLEIN) KLAPPHOLZ in the U.S., but she died in April, 1947. I have contacted various agencies and organizations, but am at a dead end.
