Re: Deportations in Poland during nazi occupation #holocaust #poland

Hello Jorge,
I am not sure if you were referring to the August 1939 deportation to Zbaszyn of Polish citizens living in Germany.
You can read about it here: https://www.yadvashem.org/holocaust/this-month/august/1939.html

"On October 27, 1938, German authorities began arresting Jews of Polish citizenship living in the Reich and transporting them to the Polish border. Responding to a Polish decree that all passports of Polish residents abroad would be rescinded by the end of October unless a special permit for reentry to Poland was received, the Germans preempted the Polish government by forcibly deporting thousands of Jews across the border into Poland."

I have a relative that was deported to Zbaszyn and so far we were not able to find any trace of him. There are some documents that I found at the JDC Archive while searcing by name at https://names.jdc.org/

Good Luck.

Jossi,

Have you seen Dr. Dan Hirshberg's website?  https://www.ics.uci.edu/~dan/genealogy/

Dan has recreated most of the Jewish citizenry of Krakow.  I do not know if this data is also in JewishGen, but if it is, I don't think it includes Dan's search engine.  One of the features of his free and searchable database is the family trees of hundreds of Jewish surnames in Krakow.  I checked yours.  It is there, in the "Early Family Trees" tab, under the name "Jolas", last updated January 15, 2021.  That tree starts with patriarch Izaak Jolas, 1769-1846.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting.

ViewMate Translation Request: 1922 Letter from Vistytis, Lithuania in Yiddish #translation #lithuania #yiddish

Jay Paul

I have posted 3 images of a letter that was attached to the passport application of Samuel Lindy, the brother-in-law of my great-granduncle. It is apparently in Yiddish, and I believe that it is from a brother of his, and related to Samuel's desire to visit his family in Vistytis. I would greatly appreciate the help of members of this group to get as close to a word-for-word translation of the letter as possible.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

record archiving suggestions? #records #general #france

Family and DNA

How all you experts are storing your paperwork?

I'm trying to be more organized about my genealogical records, & this includes finally printing out the records I have saved digitally, as well as documenting any translations.

None of what I have is original certificates or anything, & I have no non-digital photos, so I was thinking of just using the ubiquitous plastic sleeves which I could then put into ring binders (so I could easily change the order or add things, grouping by year/topic/whatever). Then I was thinking of putting these into some sort of slipcases for protection.

But bizarrely, there are almost no slipcases in France, & most binders & slipcases I do see have holes in them. If there are French folks around, can you advise as to where I might find such supplies (maybe I'm "googling" the wrong words??) ... or maybe propose another method? Thanks for any & all suggestions!

Re: Sholem (Sol) Baskin #russia

Your wife's grandfather left the country 5 years prior to the revolution, which created the Red Army, so it must be the Imperial Russian army.

However, shoulder boards are visible on all uniforms, which Red Army didn't use between Dec 1917 and the middle of WWII.  This is an indication of Imperial Russian army.  If I'm looking at the right person in the photo, he was a private - there are no stripes on his boards, while the man next to him has a single stripe (Gefreiter rank), which is similar or just above of a private E-2 in US (NATO OR-2)

This is a very broad subject. You could try arolsen- archives.org/pl  in Germany and USHMM (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum) and fill in an application. Replies may take a while but they will get back to you.. .

I also have enigmatic Baskins in my tree. My great aunt Fanny married a Joseph Baskin (born abt 1885 in Russia, probably died in New York in 1952 and possibly known in UK as Sam). Their eldest son was named Hyman born 1909 and the second Myer, born in 1910 both born in London UK. Joseph disappeared and I assume went to New York to assess the situation and as far as I can find out never returned to his UK family. Fanny eventually remarried. Could this Joseph be related to your Sholem Baskin. The names are all so similar.

Hi from Paris,
Dear Jorge,
When we don't know the individual fate of our "Losts", we can search for the collective fate of the Jewish community of their shtetl or town.
I have checked and you can access Yiskor bukh (book of memory) of Mlawa, Raciaz and Zuromin directly on JewishGen web site : https://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/translations.html#R
Pages translated in English appear in blue.
Hope it helps !

Sholem (Sol) Baskin #russia

Sam Wolff

I attach here a photo of what I was told is the Russian Red Army band. The clarinetist on the left is my wife's paternal grandfather, Sholem (Sol) Baskin (Bashkin?). He was born in 1881, either  on 7 Feb or 15 March, in Russia. His parents were Moshe Gedaliah Baskin and Miriam. Family lore puts his location in Pinsk or possibly Stolin. His trade was carpenter. He married an unknown spouse sometime around 1903; their son Meyer Baskin was born 14 June 1904. Later, on 15 Sep 1908 he married Gitel (Jennie) Gorovoy in Russia. He arrived in the United States on 28 May 1912. If anybody can confirm the uniform of the Red Army band and date the picture, or can shed light on Sholem and/or his family, I would be grateful.

Hi,

I have a Jossef Zalman Skorupa who married Shaine Sara Zajf, who was the sister of my wife’s great-grandfather.  As far as I know they had 5 children : Rachel, born about 1880 and married to ? Yellin  Jacob married to Zivia ?, Shmuel, Rosa and Feige.  Much more information I do not have.  The children were born  in Lask and Kalisz.  I presume Shaine Sara was born in Lututow or Blaszki.

The Brooklyn Public Library has posted digitized images of their telephone directory collection to the Internet Archive:  https://archive.org/details/brooklynpubliclibrary?&sort=date

You are looking for a Classified Telephone Directory (AKA Yellow Pages), of which there are several editions for the 1930s.

Memorial Plaques Database Grows to More Than 211,000 Records. Please help us grow! #JewishGenUpdates

Nolan Altman

JewishGen is proud to announce its 2020 year-end update for the Memorial Plaques Database (MPD). The MPD database can be accessed at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Memorial/   The MPD database includes the data from plaques and Yizkor lists from synagogue and other organizations.  Many of these sources include patronymic information.

This update added approximately 6,000 records and 2,200 photos from 7 organizations worldwide. This update brings the Memorial Plaques holdings to 211,000 records and 146,000 photos from 393 synagogues, institutions and memorials representing 38 countries.

Some of the largest additions to the database are the following:

  • Niagara Falls, Canada – 250 names and photos Congregation B’Nai Tikvah, which is closing.
  • West Hartford, Connecticut – 3,700 records from Congregation Beth Israel.
  • Livingston, New Jersey – 925 records and photos from the Kushner Academy at Young Israel.
  • El Paso, Texas – 675 records and photos from Congregation B'Nai Zion Talmud,
  • Pottstown, Pennsylvania – 425 records and photos from Congregation Hesed Shel Emet (Congregation Mercy & Truth).
  • Maplewood, New Jersey – 415 records and photos from Congregation Ahavath Zion.
  • Lewistown, Pennsylvania – 250 records and photos from Ohev Sholom Synagogue
  • Raleigh, North Carolina – 115 records from Congregation Sha'arei Israel.

We believe that the MPD is a good example of how users of JewishGen’s databases can “give back”.  If you are a member of a synagogue or other organization with memorial plaques or Yizkor lists, please consider helping us to grow this database.  You can find more information on submitting data at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Memorial/Submit.htm   If you have additional questions, please contact me directly.

For a complete listing of the institutions currently in the database, please see http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Memorial/tree/MemList.htm
