Re: location of Givozits? #general

Your town is definitely the Galician town of Gwozdziec, now called Hvizdets in Ukraine, located at coordinates 4835, 2517 about 19 km ENE of Kolomyja. This town had a famous wooden synagogue. The painted ceiling and timber-frame roof of the synagogue was reproduced for the core exhibition of POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. See

I'm afraid that Jewish pogrom in 1612 Poznan is not noted in Poland's historiography and the reasons for Ukraine Khmelnitsky 1648 Uprising is not related to Fettmlich's Frankfurt pogrom either.

Jewish Orphanages during WW1 #general

Andrea Tzadik

My Grandfather's family was from a small Shtetel in Galicia, Knhynicze,
My Grandfather and all the men and boys in his family were sent to work camps in Russia,
When the Russian troops invaded and burned down their town.
My Grandfather's sister, Chaya Sarah, was left alone and was put in an orphanage.
At the end of the War she ended up in Switzerland and was repatriated to the US on an
emergency passport.
My question is, where were these orphanages that Jewish children were placed in during the War?

location of Givozits? #general

I’m trying to research my parents and great grandparents. I was told by my Mother that
they lived in Givozits also mentioning Galicia,Kolomya and Bukovina. ( This must be a city , state, geographic area thing.)
I’m not sure which country database to use while researching the Jewishgen site.

David ABRAMOWITZ-New Haven/Boston-early 20th cent. #usa

Yonatan Ben-Ari

My great great grandmother, Rivka ABRAMOWITZ, came to the USA as a
widow with 4 orphaned children. To the best of our knowledge-we have
no records of any kind-she came around 1870-1880 to New Haven. Her
children were ;David, Sarah, Mayer and Kalman.

Her eldest son David, who was in his late teens went to Boston to
"seek his fortune". According to family lore, he changed his family
name at some point. Went to work in a department store and rose to
management level. Supposedly, around the mid 1930s his nephew, Chaim
Yitzchak ABRAMOWITZ, son of Mayer (and my grandfather) who had
emigrated from Israel to the states tried to contact his uncle David
and was repulsed by David's office stating that he was elderly and
sick and was recuperating at his Florida home.

Sarah probably had ongoing contact with her brother but I have no
information regarding any of Sarah's or David's descendants. Except,
and again according to family lore, Sarah and her husband lived on
Coney Island in the mid 1930s and she had at that time a grandson,
Tom, who was going to College in Boston.

My great grandfather , Mayer was sent to Jerusalem as a youth as was
his younger brother, Kalman. Kalman it seems was to young to be
without his mother and so returned shortly to the USA while Mayer
stayed, lived and died in Jerusalem as did his children.

Most of the above is based on an autobiography of Mayer's grand
daughter who specifically states that her book is a story rather than
a book of records so some of the "facts" above may be surmises. We
have contact with Kalman's descendants who don't know more about
David's and Sarah's descendants and base their family history on the
above autobiography.

The difficulty in finding more facts about Sarah and David is that if
it is true that avid changed his family name it could be anything
especially if he wanted to distance himself from Jewish tradition. And
as to Sarah, we don't know her married name.

I am hoping that someone may have a similar background and thus may be
we can share some information.

Neither "Yrlja" or "Irlja" generated an idea for me for a Yiddish name (not that I am an expert) or a likely American one.  She was going to a brother, B. Edelstein at 15 Genesee Street in Boston.  Attempts to utilize the 1910 Census or the 1906 Boston City Directory did not prove helpful.

Perhaps we should be thankful to the pandemic for putting at least a temporary halt to travel to Poland, Ukraine,  What appeared to me most cynical were the developments in Poland in having "celebrations of Jewish culture and food", and attempted revivals of Judaism in Poland. The semi-fascist governments of Poland and Hungary are an example of the warts that were existing underneath the cover of communism in Eastern Europe.  We shouldn't be surprised by the example of the (so-called) Law and Justice party.

Now I know that there were many righteous gentiles throughout Eastern Europe who did save Jewish lives, etc.  But this does not negate the underlying nature of the societies there.

And FYI, Adam Cherson and I are not related.

Re: Article of Interest on DNA Testing #dna

Jx. Gx.

One of the key takeaways from this article is the following:

"Is genetic information protected?

In some places (like the European Union), genetic data is protected as personal information. In others (like the US) it's a different story. In America, protections are strong for DNA if it's submitted to a doctor, but non-existent if it's posted off to a commercial genealogy website."

The lure of possibly uncovering some morsel of family history blinds many people to the potential dangers of giving away one's DNA.  Many years ago I railed against giving out one's Social Security number on applications that had no business asking for that data. People I spoke to at the time seemed to think I was paranoid.  Now we see how SSNs can be used to steal one's identity.  I don't trust any company that makes big promises to protect your DNA,  For the right price they will turn on that promise.

Re: Future of Holocaust Research In Poland Hinges on Libel Case #holocaust #poland

Adam Cherson

In the course of my genealogical research I've read personal testimonies about atrocities against Jews committed alongside or on behalf of Germany before and during WWII by its political confederates in Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Italy, Austria, and elsewhere. Many common folk and peasants in these countries jumped on to this bandwagon of scapegoating Jews for their own miseries and then participating in the killing and theft of property, both personal and real. Many local folk in all these places also risked their own safety by aiding Jews. So to say that all Poles were aiding and abetting Germany is false. However a book documenting specific instances of such aiding and abetting is merely describing the truth, which by definition cannot be libelous.
