The hungarian words and the rhythm certainly correspond to HaTikva, as
sung in Ivrit.

Thank you so much for your contribution.
Now, at least I know the correct spelling and the meaning of the words that my Mother zªl used to sing.
However, I now remember one additional word that I have skipped AMIT.

Ha az Isten amit megigert viszahozza Jerzsalemet.

Does this make a difference?

Thank you again for your kindness

Belarus: Jewish History & Research Strategy in Belarus Archives

Speakers: Yuri and Irina Dorn

Yuri Dorn and his wife Irina will present a brief history of Jewish Belarus, followed by a description of the different record types available for research in Belorussian archives. They will explain which records you can expect to find and suggest the best strategy for approaching one’s research. Keep in mind that your Lithuanian, Ukrainian, and Polish ancestors may have migrated from Belarus to these other areas or vice versa.

Yuri Dorn is a well-known genealogist, specializing in Jewish genealogy and ancestral tourism to Belarus. In 2002 he founded the Jewish Heritage Research Group (JHRG) in Belarus, which consists of professional historians, genealogists and certified English-speaking guides. Irina has been instrumental in its creation and growth. In addition to their work in Belorussian archives and in arranging ancestral tours to Belarus, Yuri and his staff are active in the restoration and preservation of Jewish heritage in Belarus.

All are welcome; attendance is free, but registration is required:

Peter Cherna

I played a bit with your image in a photo editor, and my best guess on the name is "Johanne Birkedal". I agree with the others that it's Aalborg.

And a little Google shows e.g.

1923-47 in Aalborg, although their spelling seemed to be "Birkedahl" whereas I see "Birkedal" but maybe there's an H in there.

Hi All,

The letter  "ą" is pronounced in Polish "on" hence the confusion.  My grandfather was born in Dąbrowa Tarnowska and it is pronounced Dombrowa Tarnowsaka.

Warm welcome to the marvels of the polish language....

In my family, the given name Shiah is short for Yehoshua (Joshua). One of my Shiah relatives translated that into Charles in English.

Re: Use of Patronyms for Last Names: MICHALOWITZ instead of LURYA #warsaw #records

Jill Whitehead

My father's father's ánd father's mother's families did the same as Mailyn's.

My great grandfather Joseph Servian (Josiel SerwianskI) had three children who came with him to Liverpool in c 1875. One of those children born Baruch Serwianski used the names Barnett Servian, then Barnet Silverman and then when he emigrated again to USA in 1905, he called himself Barnet or Bernard Maxwell - after Joseph's father Mordecai. Joseph's daughter Leah died young of typhoid aged 16 in North Wales, and she was buried as Leah Max (again after Mordecai).

My other paternal great grandfather Nathan Abrahams (born Chackiel or Casper Ceglarski) reverted to the family patronym when they came to Manchester in 1867.  Both his father and son were called Abraham Abrahams or Abrams.

The Servians came from Sejny and the Abrahams came from Suwalki both in Suwalki gubernia.

Re: Stawiski, Poland #poland

Shalom Ellen,

My grandfather came from Stawiski and I have been tracing the family's history.  The family name was Kafkevitch, which seems to be very connected to the place.
I've only just joined this group, so I don't know if you're still looking.

Kind regards,

Carrie Terry (née Freedman)

My maternal grandmother Lejke Feldman arrived at Ellis Island aboard the SS George Washington on January 27, 1914. Most of her life was lived in Pittsburgh as LENA COHEN and Zhitomir was treated almost as a fairy tale location. Unfortunately I know nothing of the fate of the JACOB FELDMAN family following her emigration.  Is it now too late?

Re: JewishGen's Latvia Database Grows #belarus #courland #latvia #JewishGenUpdates

That's amazing. What a find.
Why were Internal passport issuance books required?
Am I right in assuming that this is internal to Poland or would it be mainland Europe?

My maternal family came from Lwow, Poland between the wars. They travelled to capital cities for holidays. May I ask would they have required some sort of passport and if so is there anywhere that I might search for them?
Many thanks.

Borșa, Romania (Máramaros) - metrical records? #romania

Yossi Jalas

I'm looking for the following metrical records for Borsa, Máramaros:
Birth: 1910 - 1920
Marriage: 1900 - 1940
Death: 1900 - 1940

Are these available anywhere online?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Brooklyn Street name #usa

Steve Morse has a list of street name changes in Brooklyn at, but Boyd Street isn't on the list.  So the question now is whether Adrien's ancestor was going to Boyd Street in one of the other NYC boroughs, or to an entirely different street in Brooklyn.  You could see if there is a #17 on Boyd Street in the Bronx or in Staten Island.

Have you tried to call the Riverside Memorial Chapel to ask if they still have the record for his funeral?  It seems to be different from the actual cemetery, from what I am seeing online.

Jewish names of Kamienowicz #poland

A friend is researching an ancestor named Rochla Kamienowicz. Presumably Rochla's father would have been named Kamien. Does anyone know of such a name - It's new to me.
