Re: Additional Kiev Jewish metrical books posted to Ukrainian Archives website #ukraine #russia

Thank you Ted for showing us where these records can be accessed.
To help with my own search, it would be nice to have a translation of the column headings from Russian to English as well as an idea of where the names of the individuals are listed in each entry.
Thank you

Re: Canadian researcher needed to order 1927 naturalization record for Leib ZAROW (ZAROVSKY) #canada

Hi Ben,

I found a researcher to do the same research from the Canadian Archives for me.  His name is Peter Stockdale and his email is Drpeterstockdale@....  He was able to submit the application for me and I am now waiting for a response from the Archives.  Good luck!

Emil's Berlin death record, available at, says he was indeed born in Gehrden. It gives his date of birth as 26 September 1871.

Seeking KLEINS in VIENNA - Evelyn (MD); Walter; Julie Miriam #austria-czech

Myra Fournier

I recently learned that Heinz Klein of Vienna, Austria was my 2nd cousin. He was born in 1917 and died in 2015.
He was married to Desi Blumenthal, who must also be deceased.
Their children are Dr. Evelyn Klein and Walter Klein, and I believe them to be alive.
Walter's daughter is Julie Miriam Klein.
I would like to make contact with Evelyn, Walter, or Julie and would appreciate any information.
Thank you.

Re: Turkish or Sabbatean Jews and Jews from Salonika #general

Under Ottoman rule the city was Saloniki.  Do you mean that researchers should make sure to check that name too?

Your request for information is confusing.
Do you mean the Sabbateans who lived in the Ottoman empire or modern Turkey or do you want include other places?
Until after WWI, Salonika/Saloniki was part of the Ottoman empire but it was transferred to Greece.   The Jewish community was wiped out by the Nazis.

You might also want to contact Kehila Kadosha Janina in New York which is the only synagogue founded by Greek Jews (Romaniote) in the US.  T

There was just a wonderful film festival about Greek Jews from LA Greek film Festival. You might get some leads from this link:

Bruce Drake

Thanks to the help of Lance Ackerfeld and Nancy Siegel, there is now a searchable archive of past postings of the weekly excerpts. There is still a gap for a month in 2019 and several months of early 2020, but I am slowly but surely filling those in.
You can find it here:

Seeking Bremen Arrival Records for 1913 #germany #romania

GG-Great grandmother left New York for Bremen on Aug 9, 1913 on the SS George Washington. Her name was Anetta (Grossman) Braverman. It seems that there are records for Bremen for 1913-1914 that survived, but how do I find INCOMING manifests? I do not seem to be able to find incoming records for Bremen, nor outgoing records from New York.

Re: Numbers on 1895 UK passenger list #unitedkingdom #general

Laurie Sosna

I looked through all nine pages in the manifest.
They are recorded in this order: 2nd cabin, Steerage, Saloon passengers
Second Cabin and Steerage Passengers have it, Saloon passengers don't.

I don't think it's a pound symbol, I think it's a Z, which is often written with a bar across the middle.
There are other letter/number sequences, beginning with A, H, P, U, X
Some are only number sequences 03/4155
I'm wondering if they are ticket numbers? But not every group has one.
I compared it to the manifest on the NY end, to see if anything popped up to explain it. There isn't anything there.
Manifests from the late 1890s often have inconsistencies,  but this one is a doozy.

Hazel Dakers

The advantage of choosing Ancestry, Ric, is that whilst you can export your raw data from Ancestry into FTDNA, Gedcom, Living DNA and My Heritage - so testing yours against all these pools of DNA - had you chosen one of the others, Ancestry would not allow you to import raw data from another company into their system.

I know precisely the link between myself and one of my 5th cousins who has become a friend through genealogy for some 20 years. Of course we didn't use DNA for that - merely old fashioned archival research! However, I now also manage his DNA results which could at some time prove useful to researching our mutual family.

Gail H. Marcus

I do see that this is what the heading of the column says, but in this case, the numbers I see are clearly not ages.  The ages are given in another column.  It looks like the numbers in the first column are preceded by a symbol.  It looks like a symbol for pounds in some cases, but there is another symbol as well.  And the numbers are all 4 digits (or even 5 in one case), so if it is money, it's quite a large sum for those days, so I'm not sure what it's referring to.

This is a just a correction to my last post on the additional Jewish vital records from Kiev city.

The images on the website of the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Kiev are in .JPG format, and not in .PDF format, as mistakenly stated in the previous post.

I watched the webinar last night, and even though I have been testing for almost 19 years, I learned some new techniques to be more productive finding connections. The webinar was excellent and valuable for beginners and us “old-timers.”

Gesher Galicia has a new webinar out today that exactly explains this issue. It would really pay for you to watch it. You need to be a member of Gesher Galicia to view but if you are not it certainly would pay for you to join. It's only $36.

Re: Boarders or Lodgers on Census Documents #general

Thank you for that Jill. I will be exploring the families of both Harry Kaufman and David Seligson as best I can.
The thing with this type of research is don't give up. One day I will confirm details one way or another.
If nothing else I will learn of the social history of the time and hopefully understand better the type of lives that my ancestors led.

Re: Searching GORDON family, Libau -> Londonderry, Ireland c1884 #latvia #general #courland

I assume you have seen the 1911 Census record - the family name was recorded as Gardon

On the 1901 Census he was a single man.

One of my relations Leonard Fieldman married Pauline Frais  in 1944 in Belfast. Pauline's mother was Rachel Gordon and her parents were Reuven  and Yetta Gerber both born about 1866 in Russia
Hope this helps

Re: New Find Raises Questions about Family Name: #poland #names

David Harrison <djh_119@...>

I tried to reply yesterday but the server was down for more than an hour and this may be the wrong e-address.

My grandfather from Russian Poland came to England from Poland via Berlin and Paris and whose documentation is a story of myth and invention all devised because of a belief in the power of a state Police Force.  Therefore I might suggest that a person going through Ellis Island might feel unable to argue with or change any name written oon a paper in a foreign language.  In these cases not only was the language different, but so was the character set.  Do not forget that in Czarist times (before 1917) Jewish men were leaving because they wanted to avoid 25 years in the Army. Some of them could escape, but most of the non-Jewish population were Serfs, not much better than slaves and in the Army as the quota from their owner.  I think that this far away in time some of you are forgetting the effective system at that time or any other time and do not use present day values,  I am

aged 89 and remember well that because I passed an exam aged10, I did not leave school and start work aged 14 as had my parents.  But also I was allowed to come home alone from Boarding School into the London Blitz aged 10, the 60 miles in one train, cross London by Underground  (Railway) and then take another train 10 miles, before walking a mile home;  It would not be allowed today.   Later, aged 16 I travelled to France alone to visit a pen -friend and he later came over to me.
