Genealogical Revelations of Hungarian Jewish Families - First Volume Editor - Munkatchi #hungary

Has anyone heard of:
Genealogical Revelations of Hungarian Jewish Families - First Volume Editor - Munkatchi

The Magyar spelling of the Editor's name would actually be: Munkacsi.

Does anyone have a copy to look something up for me?

Thank you!

I request a translation of the death certificate of Veronika LEVI the sister of my great grandfather.  She was a twin, but so far I have not found the death certificate of her twin, who also died soon after birth. Sadly they were the first children of my 2x great grandparents.  It is on ViewMate at the following address .

Thank you so much,

Forum for Dialogue Zoom: Virtual tour of Lodz #announcements #lodz #poland

Mark Halpern

Dear Fellow Genealogists:

Whether you have ancestry from Lodz or not, you don't want to miss this online tour of Jewish Lodz, the second most important Jewish city in Poland after Warsaw. I have been on tours with the Forum for Dialogue and their tours are just first rate even online.

Join me this Thursday at 10 am Pacific time, 1 pm Eastern time, 6 pm in UK, 8 pm in Israel for a very worthwhile hour.

Mark Halpern

As the travel restrictions still hinder our international friends from visiting Poland in person, I would like to invite you to a virtual tour of another Polish city with a rich Jewish heritage and a special place in the history of Polish Jews. We feel that virtual tours of Warsaw and Krakow we hosted last summer were a great success, therefore let me invite you to our Zoom in on the Forum session devoted to Lodz and its 20th century history.
Our guest, Milena Wicepolska-Goralczyk, Lodz tour guide and a genealogist, will walk us through the rise of "Polish Manchester" as a significant social and industrial center with vibrant Jewish community and its tragedy during the Nazi occupation with the creation of Litzmannstadt Ghetto.
Join us next Thursday, February 25th, at 10 am Pacific, 12 pm Central, 1 pm Eastern, 7 pm Warsaw, 8 pm Tel-Aviv time for a session about Lodz.

Milena Wicepolska-Goralczyk, graduate of English Philology and History, is a tour guide and a Jewish genealogy researcher with more than 10 years of experience. She has cooperated with numerous organizations, such as Taube Center for Jewish Life and Learning, Center of Jewish Research in Lodz, Jewish Historical Institute, University of Lodz, University of Michigan, University of Haifa.
Do not hesitate to share this information with people who might be interested in joining this session!
Looking forward to meeting you on Thursday,

How to make a payment to a Ukrainian Archive? #records #ukraine #translation

Hi Siggers,
Recently I sent for the death record of my great-grandfather and received the attached invoice.
I do not speak Ukrainian and I cannot figure out how to go about making the payment.
My bank tells me that in order to make a wire transfer I need the bank's Swift number and their address. Additionally I need the organization's name, address, and account number.
So my questions are:  Are all these things on the invoice and which is which?
Also, my bank wants to charge me $35 for the wire transfer whereas the invoice is for only about $4. Does anyone know a less expensive way to send the money? When I googled about it MoneyGram came up. Does anyone have experience with them? Would I need all the same info?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have family members (sieradzi) who traveled from piotrków kujawski, poland to london in the 1880s.   Where might I find the ship/passenger list for them online?
I am not sure what port they exited poland, there is a chance it's the port of gdynia.

Are there any birth records from about 1895 from the shtetl Kolonie L'vove in Kherson Guberniya?
Don't know if the vital records exist for this particular settlement, but there is definitely an 1858 census, that it is included in.
Actually, L'vovo can't be considered a shtetl as it was organized as a Jewish farm colony.
You can reply directly to me with the last name(s) and I will check if they are present in the document.

Re: Additional Kiev Jewish metrical books posted to Ukrainian Archives website #ukraine #russia

Thank you Ted for showing us where these records can be accessed.
To help with my own search, it would be nice to have a translation of the column headings from Russian to English as well as an idea of where the names of the individuals are listed in each entry.
Thank you

Hi Ben,

I found a researcher to do the same research from the Canadian Archives for me.  His name is Peter Stockdale and his email is Drpeterstockdale@....  He was able to submit the application for me and I am now waiting for a response from the Archives.  Good luck!

Seeking KLEINS in VIENNA - Evelyn (MD); Walter; Julie Miriam #austria-czech

Myra Fournier

I recently learned that Heinz Klein of Vienna, Austria was my 2nd cousin. He was born in 1917 and died in 2015.
He was married to Desi Blumenthal, who must also be deceased.
Their children are Dr. Evelyn Klein and Walter Klein, and I believe them to be alive.
Walter's daughter is Julie Miriam Klein.
I would like to make contact with Evelyn, Walter, or Julie and would appreciate any information.
Thank you.

Re: Turkish or Sabbatean Jews and Jews from Salonika #general

Under Ottoman rule the city was Saloniki.  Do you mean that researchers should make sure to check that name too?

Your request for information is confusing.
Do you mean the Sabbateans who lived in the Ottoman empire or modern Turkey or do you want include other places?
Until after WWI, Salonika/Saloniki was part of the Ottoman empire but it was transferred to Greece.   The Jewish community was wiped out by the Nazis.

You might also want to contact Kehila Kadosha Janina in New York which is the only synagogue founded by Greek Jews (Romaniote) in the US.  T

There was just a wonderful film festival about Greek Jews from LA Greek film Festival. You might get some leads from this link:

Bruce Drake

Thanks to the help of Lance Ackerfeld and Nancy Siegel, there is now a searchable archive of past postings of the weekly excerpts. There is still a gap for a month in 2019 and several months of early 2020, but I am slowly but surely filling those in.
You can find it here:
The search function is a little rudimentary, and works for simple searches on a specific key word, like the name of a town or a holiday.
On a PC, you do it with a Ctrl-F. If you are on an iPhone, you can click on this “share” symbol in Chrome or Safari and go to “Find on page” in the menu. For Google on Android, the icon is

Seeking Bremen Arrival Records for 1913 #germany #romania

GG-Great grandmother left New York for Bremen on Aug 9, 1913 on the SS George Washington. Her name was Anetta (Grossman) Braverman. It seems that there are records for Bremen for 1913-1914 that survived, but how do I find INCOMING manifests? I do not seem to be able to find incoming records for Bremen, nor outgoing records from New York.
