ViewMate translation request - German #translation

Debbie Bloch

I have posted a 1917 registration form from when my Hungarian great-grandparents Martin and Rosa Beckman moved to Vienna. I was wondering if someone could please help read what is written next to line 3 - Charakter - I just can't make it out. The names and ages I can read. I would also be very interested if anyone has any additional information about this type of registration form.

The document is on ViewMate at the following address ...

Thank you very much,

Research Jewish Genealogical Resources on the Internet
March 14th- 1pm Pacific Standard Time
Presented by Daniel Horowitz, Genealogy Expert at MyHeritage

RSVP:  https://forms.gle/wFGafgZoho7wRoHL7

Learn about the main repositories for Jewish Genealogy available on the internet. This program will illustrate how to search efficiently in different Jewish (JewishGen, GesherGalicia, JRI-Poland and Jewish Genealogy Societies like IGRA and IGS) and not-Jewish (FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage) databases, to find the information you are looking for; even if you don't know it existed. Daniel will also help you overcome the barrier of the language with a basic lesson of Hebrew, focusing on the tombstones terminology and how to translate efficiently to English; as many of the Jewish repositories available are only in Hebrew.

I have a question about the rabbi referenced above - Is Rabbi Kalonymus Kadishevitz the same person as Rabbi Kalman Kadishevitz, or are these two different persons?

I believe the above comment about a possible mis-transcription of Cohen as 'Colon' is in reference to the FamilySearch record image I posted above.

When I began to first look into my paternal family's history, in US records I found Colon numerous times, but also occasionally Collins and a few rare times Cohen.

Jewishgen records have solved this mystery. The name in Lithuania was originally Kalon or Kolon. It is pronounced like Collins, but without the 's'.

I wish you much luck in your quest. At the same time, may I suggest that you might not want to publish the exact date of your birth or that of any living person?  Sadly, identity theft can lurk anywhere.

My parents used to joke about which one was a Litvak.  With just this information, I can now say with a little authority that it was probably my mother. I put in her father's last name and found over 1400 people with that last name, though I have never found it before. Can't wait to look deeper and find my grandfather's family.  Thanks so much!

Using My Heritage #general

KAREN SAUNDERS

I am wondering if anyone has experienced the following and if so what action was taken.

I have my family tree on My Heritage. Every time I make an update regardless how remote the ancestor, I have another user copying it into her tree.

I have contacted her asking how we might be related with a response that she will get back to me. My Heritage were of no assistance.

At the risk of being advised that I am being paranoid, it makes me nervous that my family is being “stalked”.

I would appreciate feedback.

Thanks Richard.  It is the same person and I have the information about his birth and death dates.  He and Mary had at least four children: Ida, Morris, Lawrence, and Louise.

Hello,

I wanted to repost this on the new discussion group and in case there are now members who may have additional information . . . please see the below questions.  If indeed this Rebbetzin Rivka was buried in Safed, I think she died before around 1845.  Are there any sources for old Safed burials, either online or in print?

Hello,

I'm trying to find out more information about Rivka who was a daughter
of Rabbi Nachman Tzvi EPSTEIN (1740 - 1829), ABD Kolomyya. According to
Meorei Galicia, her first marriage was to R' Menachem Mendel ROSEN.
After he died in Iasi on their way to Eretz Yisrael, she continued on
and married a prominent Sephardic Rabbi.

Who was the Sephardic Rabbi? When did she die and how old was she? For
some reason, I think she is buried is Safed but I can't find the source
so I could be mistaken.

1939 Refugee Routes from Poland #poland

dwhitehead2634@...

Trying to find the details of the transportation of 200 Polish refugees from Piraeus, Greece to Marseilles, France in September 1939. The Polish freighter, MS LEWANT, was in port at Piraeus from 4-26 September 1939 before sailing for Marseilles where they arrived on 29 September. Antwerp may have been their intended destination but the journey terminated at Marseilles given situations in the Low Countries and at sea at that time. What happened when they arrived at Marseilles remains to be found when French archives reopen, unless of course, someone happens to know about the Lewant or procedures upon arrival at Marseilles.

But, the question here is the likely route refugees traveled from Poland to Greece, arriving at lands end in Piraeus. Were there organized routes of escape to the south and east? Would traditional ties to Galicia have made a route through Ukraine natural? Then there was  the problem of the Soviet invasion of 17 September but given their presence in Piraeus by 26 September would mean they cleared Ukraine before the Soviets entered.

Many thanks for any information readers can pass along.

I am not happy with Ancestry messaging system. Because, as has been stated, they dont always advise about new messages, and very often people dont look to see if they have new messages!
