Late birth registrations #poland #records

Herbert Lazerow

Before the 1920s, most births occurred at home. Different jurisdictions had different ways to assure that births were registered, but none was foolproof. Philadelphia required the midwife or doctor to register it, and those lists can be found in the City Archives, but sometimes they forgot to do it.
Sometimes the lack of registration was caught when the child entered school at age 6.  When my mother requested a passport at age 54, she could not present a birth certificate; the passport office accepted an affidavit from her father of her birth in the U.S., stating the date and city.

Zelva, Derechin, Slonim 1800s records #belarus #records

arnold friedman <afriedman21@...>

Hi,

I appreciate of any advice or connections you might have to people or
records in Zelva and local region I have not been able to find any
record or gravesite or any trace of them in Belarus.

I have all my and my wife’s family tree back until at least the early
1800s except for this brick wall in Zelva, Derechin and Slonim area.

From Scottish and US records, I know the following:

SAMUEL COHEN* born abt 1859 Zelva, son of Isaac (farmer) and Gerty
(Chaia Gaile?)
Married abt 1880 to CELIA (Szfreas?) GOLLAND born abt 1861 Zelva,
daughter of Abraham.

Children:
Issac abt 1882-5 in Zelva

Annie? Abt 1885
Abraham abt 1890
Others born in Scotland

SOLOMAN (Shlomo Maier) COHEN* born abt 1870, son of Issac (farmer) and Gerty
Married abt 1893 to BESSIE LENZEWITSKI, daughter of Moshe Dovid (farmer) and
Sarah, and maybe she had brothers Gadalie (had children in Slonim) and
Judle

Soloman and Bessie Children:
Hannah abt 1895
Dinah 1896 or 1897
Isaac abt 1900 (in Derechin)
Other children afterwards were born in Scotland

Gadalie Lenzewitski wife Rachel Green
Children born in Slonim
Nuchem 1891 or 1892
Chamka (Annie) 1895
Others tbd

All names are from Scottish or US records, so they are modified from
the original.

*Assume Cohen was not their name in Belarus, but maybe they were Kohanim

Again, thank you for any assistance

Re: Marriage of Ethel LENNIS #canada #general

Michele Lock

If the wedding announcement in the newspaper was in the past tense, then the wedding most likely took place. That is, if the article is written as 'The bride wore...' and 'So-and-So was the best man', then this indicates that the event had already happened.
On the other hand, I have seen wedding announcements that begin 'The marriage of Sarah B. and Joseph M. will be solemnized this evening' which indicates that the event hadn't happened yet, perhaps because the article was published in a morning edition of a paper.
Back in those days, the woman would have taken the man's surname, so if she several years later was buried under her maiden name, what I suspect is that the couple divorced, probably fairly soon after the wedding, and so the woman went back to using her maiden surname.
You can also follow what happened to the man over the years, to see if he re-married and when. If he re-married before her death, then they must have gotten divorced. Sometimes, if you can obtain a marriage license for the man, it will state if he had been previously married (at least some US licenses show this). Checking to see if the man had children and when, is another way to figure what his marital history was.

You need to look for the

- marriage record of Alexandrina Palmire Henri/Henry. It should contain her place and date of birth.

- birth record of Alexandrina Palmire Henri/Henry at her place of birth.

- marriage record of Charlotte and Content Joseph Henri. It should contain their places and dates of birth.

- birth record of Charlotte Polain at her place of birth

- birth record of Content Joseph Henri at his place of birth

- marriage record of Alexandre Polain who married Charlotte?

All this records should be online for free on the websites of the relevant archives départementales.

If you don't know the places of birth or marriage you could look at geneaet or filae, but for filae you need to pay.

Hi all,

I've encountered some birth records that were registered years after
the birth had actually happened. Was it not mandatory to register a
birth? Did it cost money to do it? Why not register it in the first
place? and then why suddenly decide to register a few years later?

Many thanks and happy Pesach!

I have searched under her name Eida (IDA), as well as her siblings names in Russia and Belarus, and I've hit a roadblock. I know from some old letters I have that she had a sister Chava ( Chavah/Havah) and a brother Joseph ( Josef), but I'm still unable to come up with anything. "WILLIG" Marriage Record in Wien (Vienna, Austria) #austria-czech #poland #records

Sniderlh

Hi,

I am hoping somebody out there near an LDS library can obtain a marriage record for, Hans Willig, born 25 Apr 1903, Wien, Austria and, Wanda Pilewski, born 11 Feb 1903, Lviv, Poland.  They were living in Wien (Vienna) in the 1920's and married there on, 18 Aug 1927.  My father always said she was some sort of 'cousin' and I am trying to tie her to my paternal grandmother's family, as that's where the tie was said to be, but I need more information.  I am hoping this record will shed a little more light for me.
Thank you,

Hazel,

A marriage announcement in The NY Spectator in 1829:

Married on Wednesday 4th Feb., by The Rev. Phenix HART,  Mr, Joshua D. NORDEN, of this city, to MIss Catharine, eldest daughter of Henry Lazarus, of Charleston, S.C.

Also Dec. 2, 1830, The NY Evening Post, Joshua D. NORDEN's name is included in a list of names of people having letters waiting for them at the post office.

Hope this helps,

I have posted the back of photo that was found among my mother's possessions. The is incomplete and only contains fragments of words. It is all I have. The larger message from which this was extracted is missing. My mother's paternal family came from what used to be Hungary but is now Slovakia and her maternal family came from Tarnobrzeg, Poland (Galicia). I suspect this is a photo from the Galcizianer side of the family.

Seeking information on Hyman David Wolk (Moshe Tsodik) who lived in or near Petkunai, Lithuania approx. 1840 - 1900.  Husband of Leba (or Lillian) Bresky Wolk and father of six children.  To the best of my knowledge the family surname was Wolk and not 'Volk".  Search of databases has turned up almost nothing.  Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated.
