Re: Searching French birth record for Christophe Jean Le Noel #france #records

David Choukroun

Dear Rose,

Archives Départementales 76 (archivesdepartementales76.net)
will give you the birth for Jan 1854 @ Rouen (item 10 or 11) : but nobody recorded with this name at my first quick reading

To my knowledge, La Manche is a french department, with Saint-Lô as main city.
Manche (département) — Wikipédia (wikipedia.org)

Without the city, it is difficult to find the right register :
Rechercher - Registres paroissiaux et d'état civil - Archives de la Manche (archives-manche.fr)
(you can see on the left side all the possible cities... more than 100...)

As I see (Geneanet) the following information:
  • Born 17 January 1854 - Manche, France
  • Deceased 17 February 1939 - Auckland, New Zealand, aged 85 years old

I suggest to get the death act in NZ first to get the exact city of birth in France

Kind regards from Paris

Looking for Sarah and Edward Greenberg #lithuania

Sharon Ann Dror

The Penn Family shared a 100 page typewriter journal by Sonia nee Greenberg Penn Helfand dated 1960 with me.
I read thorough and unfortunately, she did not use the people’s names, instead she said, my brother, the butcher, my father, my mother, etc.
Because of this journal, I discovered that she had several brothers. One brother is Joseph Greenberg. He came into the USA in May 29, 1907 on Statenham and stayed with uncle Chaim Greenberg per this document: New York, Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957

Someone I forgot who it was also sent this information to me from JewishGen. Thank you....

Chaim’s granddaughter Dara does not know anything about her grandfather.
Sonia’s grandson Matthew does not know the names of the people Sonia is referring to in the book and doesn’t know her family.
Joseph married to Sarah Tabriz on June 3, 1915 in New York.
They had one girl Roslyn AKA Rosalind who died at 17 months old. November 1, 1924 - April 2, 1926 in New York. I got a picture of her tombstone and her death certificate.
I have a picture of Joseph’s tombstone who is buried near Roslyn and his death certificate. He died on January 20, 1954. They both are buried at Mount Hebron in New York.
Jospeh and Sarah have a son Edward - I’m looking for his whereabouts and if he has a family in New York. He was born on January 26, 1918.
I do not know what became of Sarah nee Tabris as she is not buried by them. So I would like to know what became of Sarah and Edward...
1915 US Census shows: Joseph and Sarah
1920 US Census shows: Joseph, Sarah and Edward
1925 US Census shows: Joseph, Sarah Edward and Roslin
1930 US Census shows: Joseph, Sarah and Edward
1940 US Census shows: Joseph and Sarah
1940 US Census shows: Edward (24) as a nephew stayed/lived with: Popowsky Family Abraham, Kate, and Herbert (21)

Erica: I'm also interested. Others will be far more knowledgeable but I have the understanding that when Poland was absorbed into Russia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire before reacquiring statehood after WW1, things get a little complicated. I was informed that Poland wasn't very interested that my grandfather was born in Krakow in 1884, but the Austrians weren't interested either in citizens born in parts of the empire that disappeared in 1919! I did complete a quick survey for one of the firms claiming to offer assistance and they got back saying no-go. They may have been mistaken but at least it was an honest reply because my greater fear was they would take money when there was no chance of success. I think the EU passport thing has some appeal, but I also like the idea of reclaiming something that was taken away from my family, even if in practical terms it doesn't make any real difference to my life

Unfortunately I was referring to Israel when I mentioned change, etc.  Good luck to you on changing Poland and Europe in general.  And why gain EU citizenship when you have US citizenship.  Despite current problems this country is far preferable to Europe.  Well I'm not going to argue this anymore as I can see that some people are suffering from idealism.  And regards to idealism a colleague of mine many years ago told me that idealism is the basis of fascism (no you aren't fascists he was describing what he saw as the basis for that movement)

My experience with Arolsen: in the 90s I wrote them and they confirmed my request. It took them approx. 6 years to answer and tell me where and when my Grandfather had perished.
Last year I wrote them an email asking about my Grandmother (who survived) and a few more relatives. I received a few pdf files a few weeks later with a lot of information. So I would recommend Sally to simply try it again.

Good luck and best regards,

Re: Can Animals Commit a Murder? #translation #germany #names

David Seldner

In German nowadays "ermordet" means murdered. This is not "killed" (killed would be "getötet"). But looking at the bible, 10 commandments, the Hebrew Original says "Thou shall not murder" (Lo tirtzach), English and German translate this to "Thou shall not kill" ("Du sollst nicht töten") which actually is not correct. Not being a specialist for languages I do think that "murdered" is meant - the main difference is whether it happened "by accident" or "on purpose". I doubt that nowasys in German one would say that an animal murdered a human being although killing one can happen.

My great-grandfather Samuel BERNARD worked as a peddler before he started a canteen in Robertson. Would he have chosen for transport via Port Nolloth to O'Okiep or via Johannesburg where his suppliers had a second warehouse?

Help wanted to locate my grandfather's family from Poland Lubin/Lubosky #poland #general

Liza Pirie <lizap@...>

Hello
Help wanted to locate my grandfather's family from Poland Lubin/Lubosky

My father died last year without us knowing anything about his father apart from his name ‘Edward Lubin’  born in 1912. I have researched and found that his birth name was Aaron Lubosky and died in Birmingham UK in 1973. His father was called Lewis Lubosky and his mother was Mary Krustonofsky and they came over from Poland.

He married Catherine Williams and had two children Susan S Lubin and Louis Lubin.

This is all the information that I have. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

I’m currently helping a friend who is searching for a birth record for her ancestor Christophe/Christie Jean LE NOEL. According to the information she has her ancestor was born on 17 January 1854 in Manche or Rouen, France.

My friend would be very grateful if someone could shed some light on her ancestor’s birth.

Best wishes,

Re: Child of holocaust survivors seeks to obtain Polish citizenship #general #poland

I, too, am interested in Polish citizenship (through my grandparents, unfortunately no birth certificates). Years ago I started looking into it, and there was a Polish woman in Australia (I think) who you could hire. I hadn't heard of Lexmotion until now, so I'm interested to see if others post. As for Mr. Cherson's comments, the main reason for many people obtaining citizenship of a Central European country is to gain acces to residency and employment in any EU country. And as Mr. Cherson points out, "Just because you might not like the government and the society doesn't fit your desired mold is no reason.  By becoming a citizen you can help change those things more than you can from the outside." So obtaining Polish citizenship would enable you to participate in helping to make changes there.
