Re: How to recreate previously found Jewishgen census record UK 1851 #records

Islington is now an area within London, just to the North of The City.  The Angel, Islington is a pub which has given it's name to a cross roads (road junction), now on the boundary of the Clean Air Zone, it is part of one of the present Boroughs which now each include many (20 or 30) of these smaller areas.  What you did wrong was not to understand that that the present boroughs are very large and that the London A-Z Street Map shows the smaller areas but not the borough boundaries.

Belinda,

I think the word after Snowicz is essentially the same as the word at the end and means something like resides. Then I think Lieb and Sara live in the town beginning with Remi. That's probably Remezovtsy in Russian, Remezivtsi in Ukrainian, only about 6 km from Snowicz.

Neil and any others on the Cardiff trail

I would have thought that the records of Clubs and Societies (and similar) relating to a Synagogue were kept in the Archives.  A first source to try would be the town or County Archives.  Maybe some features might be kept at Welsh National level, which I would doubt.   If the Synagogue was in a British Isles grouping, such as United Synagogue, they might have their own archive; many organisations have their records at Southampton University in a special Library (the name escapes me).   Main items of Jewish interest would most likely be in the Hewish Chronicle.   Some bits and bobs with links may well be known to whoever looks after records for other Synagogues, any Jewish School or Cemetery, you might need to ask as far away as Hereford, Gloucester or Bath for extant still alive and working societies which certainly have groups which hold communal services (they are the South Wales Boundary of my own Birmingham congregation with (fairly active) members in Anglesey and Aberystwyth.

I hope this gives you some ideas,
keep safe and enjoy

Hi

I'm trying to track down any society records, and ideally photographs of the Jewish community in late 19th Century Cardiff. Has anyone come across or can direct me to where I can possibly find?
In 1897 one of my ancestors married into what appears to be a relatively well-to-do family in the city, at what reads as (according to the local press) a very big ceremony. All the special for it being the last one held at the East Terrace Synagogue before it relocated to the premises on Cathedral Road. After the ceremony "the bridal party drove to the Fine At Gallery on Queen Street, where a reception was held in the evening".

Sadly the local press that I've found (online) limits the description of the events to a vivid text commentary of this event. Other articles suggest a very socially and philanthropic active local community in Cardiff at the time.
Grasping at straws but this might offer an avenue to getting to understand more about my relatives past lives and dare I hope see what they looked like. So all pointers, suggestions, reference books, contacts and archive help much appreciated.

Many thanks

Neil

I am 100% Ashkenazi.  On any form that asks for race, I check other and write in "Semitic."  This is probably going to start a whole new discussion on this topic but, what the heck.

The Ancestry DNA results show that there is a sub-population of Jews (Ashkenazim) who share certain identifiable genotypical patterns. I would go one step further to say that these genotypical patterns include a commonly shared Near Eastern ancestry (however, it is important to note that this Near Eastern ancestry is not the only phylogeographic ancestry shared by Ashkenazim). Since no population is 100% homogeneous genetically, the facts presented by DNA evidence don't mesh well with socio-political concepts such as race, nationality, and minority status-- when speaking about genetic genealogy I avoid any of these terms.

Freud lived in an apartment block in Vienna which I have visited when on holiday about 10 years ago. His home is a tourist attraction which is online. From memory, there is a fair bit of info about his neighbours in the guide books to his home. But you can also find the Vienna phone directories on Ancestry, and you could try looking these up.

Lita is in a border area. It is now part of Belarus (since 1945) but has also been part of Lithuania (1918-1945) and also Suwalki gubernia in Poland in the19th century and up to WW1. My late cousin's middle name was Lita, as some of the family came from there when it was part of Suwalki.

Yes, indeed.
According to Genteam.eu, Max Gans Schiller, born 9 Feb. 1853 Lobositz, Leitmeritz, died on 4 Oct 1910 in Vienna. He is buried in the Central Cemetery, gate T1,
group 053B, row 14, tomb no 22. He was living at Berggasse 8 in the 9th borough.

Freud was living at Berggasse 19, about a block away.

For more details you can request a registration record at the City of Vienna. Details are explained here:

There is an online request form in English.

Protections? I am not clear on what those might be.
Given the history of the 20th century, I am not about to fill in a box marked "race" on any form.
I have always lived in the US and have felt fairly safe here, but I understand so did our people in Germany once.

Hi Rick,

Those things can be check in the "Adoph Lehmann's allgemeiner Wohnungs-Anzeiger (Adoph Lehmann's general appartment directory) at https://www.digital.wienbibliothek.at/wbrobv/periodical/titleinfo/5311
I checked 1908 (https://www.digital.wienbibliothek.at/wbrobv/periodical/titleinfo/229444), Volume 2 for you. Page 377 you find Max Gans-Schiller, however, it is not clear if this is the address of an appartment, his shop, or both. Anyway the address is Porzellangasse 16 which is 300m away from Berggasse 19 where Sigmund Freud lived. It could be that somebody mixed "near to the house of Dr. Freud" with "in the house of Dr. Freud. Or the given address was just the shop and the Glas-Schiller family did not want to make their private address public.

Kindest regards,

My maiden name is Hantz and I was told that it could have been spelled Hanz. My GG family was from Hungary/Czechoslovakia. My family is Jewish and we always thought that our last name sounded German and not Hungarian. I heard stories that my Great Grandfather's family may have originally been from Austria. I have hit so many road blocks trying to find info on this side of my family. Good luck with your search.

Origin of the word 'Peruvian' to describe jewws on the doamond nad goldfields #southafrica #general

geraldine.auerbach@...

I am wondering is anyone knows the origin of the term 'Peruvian' used by other Jews and those outside the community to describe in a derogatory way some of the Jews newly arrived on the diamond of goldfields in South Africa at the turn of the last century 1870 – 1930? Some have suggested it was short for a ‘Polish and Russian Union – a club that originated in Kimberley. But I don’t know of any refence to such a club or union. Has anyone any ideas?

Hi Amy,

According to his declaration, Joseph sailed from Trieste and arrived in may 1908.  His real surname was given as Gorenzivit.
There is a Josef Gorencziwitt  (b.1885) that sailed from Trieste in May1909 (not 1908). His destination was nyc to a friend named Sorin and his contact in Russia was his father Aron.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JXBQ-528

The problem is that this man was born in Zhitomir and not Paolona (maybe he meant Poland?), and his last residence was a place called Solomios/Solomiec/Soloniec(?). Perhaps it was this place
https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/community.php?usbgn=-1052957

Regarding Lita (Sadie's birthplace) it may be Lida, as you write,  or perhaps Litin, a place close to Zhitomir.
