To Sydney Levine and other researchrs––

Beloved Rabbi Max Ticktin died nearly 5 years ago. This obituary gives the names of his daughters. You could try reaching out to them to see if they have any family history or lore in hand.

My son in law Benjamin Sanderson has one DNA match on Ancestry with surname Schneirow.
Do you know the town of origin?

We know Sanderson was an adopted English form. The original surname is not known. But the place Isaac Sanderson son of Abraham Moses came from was Polish speaking and I have wondered about Pultusk.
We know his gt grandfather Isaac Sanderson had a brother who passed through Liverpool on the way to Chicago shortly before Edith was born, that is 1912. So that date dosnt fit with yours.

Hi,

There was actually another person asking about the Laniado family (from Livorno Italy, I believe). My only comment is that there were Laniados from Syria (Sam Laniado from Brooklyn NY sent a congratulations via telegram to my parents when they got married in 1951).

So sorry that I can't be of help.

Eliezer and Raizel are my great great grandparents on my father's side. They were living in Mount Street, Whitechapel, London in 1911 with their 10-month old daughter Rebecca (Sarah). Eliezer may have died in 1936, but in any case they were bombed out of Whitechapel during WWII and ended up in Leicester, where Rose (as she was then known) opened a deli in Highfields Street.

But that's all we know. The 1911 census states that Raizel came from Kovno, Lithiania, but we don't have her maiden name. Eliezer also came from Russia, but it's hard to decipher the census writing. Looks like it could be Tucham or Iuchan?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. I would like to join to research info about my 4 x g grandfather Abraham ben Gedaliah Tiktin 1764 - 1820. With thx.

Looking for information about Naftali (Eli) HERTZ RASKIN #belarus

S.raskin@...

In the last ten years I am searching for information about my great grand grandfather Naftali (Eli) Hertz Raskin, who lived in the village of El'nya, close to Hotimsk, Mogilev, Belarus, and was a cantor and schohet. He was born around 1840 and died around 1923.

Naftali Eli Hertz Raskin was married to FEIGA ZLOTINA (born around 1850 and died around 1916), and they had at least 6 daughters and 6 sons; AIZIK ITZHAK RASKIN, PERL RASKINA HAIKINA, ABRAM YAKOV RASKIN, RISSI RASKINA FRADKIN GROISSMAN, BORUCH ARON RASKIN, LIBA RASKINA KRUGLYAKOVA, DAVID RASKIN, NECHAMA/FREIDA RASKINA, LEIB LEV RASKIN, HAE BELLA BEILE RASKINA GODLINA, GENUH RASKIN AND ETEL ETA RASKINA ZLOTINA.

During all these years I learned that there are thousands of RASKINS spread worldwide, and not all of them are relatives of each other. As you know, one modern way to check if we are from the same Raskin clade, is to check our Y chromosome DNA. I did my test, and besides showing that I totally match the Cohen genetic markers, it gave me a very good idea of my paternal Raskin ancestral in Russia. The male Russian relatives who indeed are my relatives and have the last name Raskin, also tested their Y DNA, and we share the same Y DNA haplotype, as expected.

If you have ANY information about NAFTALI ELI HERTZ RASKIN, please email me at s.raskin@...

The "Biographisches Handbuch der Rabbiner" is a good resource.  I do not think you will find any useful information from contacting the very talented Bente Kahan in Wroclaw. Genealogy and historical records are not her expertise.  Likewise, the Wroclaw Jewish community does not have any particular resources to address such questions.

Abraham Gedaliah TIKTIN is included in the Glogau Jewish family register from 1812.  There, his birth date is given as 1 Dec 1751, much more likely since he married on 13 Dec 1771 and had his first (known to me) son in 1773.  R. Abraham TIKTIN went to Glogau about 1800 and I believe he was there until he went to Breslau about 1816.

Finding information about his father Gedaliah will be a challenge..  Rabbinic texts might be source.

Re: Jews with Christian names #names

Sarah L Meyer

I believe that the quote was taken out of context.  The original comment was made by a non-Jewish woman who referred to first names or given names as "Christian names" and the comment was that we do not use "Christian names", we do use first names or given names.  The discussion was not which first/given names are "Christian", in the original post the reference was to all  given names.

It seems to be a card of displaced persons during world war II. Arrived in Barcelona on Mar 23, 1944 and he was moved to Lerida (Lleida) on June 23 1944, or arrived in Lerida on June 23, 1944 and from Lerida he was moved to Barcelona on August 23, 1944. Do not understand the name of the place on Nov 1st, 1944. He was sent back to France on May 4, 1945.  The other people were Sarah (aunt) and Therese (cousin)

My cousin Benjamin Zimbrow came to America in 1906, and the passenger manifest says he was coming to a cousin named Itze Schneirow in Chicago.  I have no idea how he's related, but I thought it would be a good avenue to go down.  If there's anyone here with Isaac Schneirow on their tree, I'd love to talk.

Thanks,

Re: Jews with Christian names #names

Alan Cohen

It is often forgotten that Jesus as well as his close followers were all Jewish. So it is not surprising that Jews are occasionally given the same names. It is the modern Christians who have, in the trendy phrase, culturately oppropriated the names. I had a cousin named Paul zl who was definitely Jewish and of Ukrainian origin.
