Re: understanding Russian language passport #belarus #russia #translation

I had my grandfather's 1911 Russian passport translated by the Russian manicurists at a local shop. (They were so excited to help!) Turns out it was in "old Russian" but they had no trouble.

It's much better to upload such images to JewishGen's ViewMate. ViewMate - To Upload (

Re: Finding New York Death Certificate if have Index Number from 1949 #records

The record must be ordered, and you have to demonstrate a familial relation in order to do so. The direct-line relationship must be within that of a great-grandparent; requests for cousins, aunts and uncles will not be fulfilled.

If I'm not wrong, it means that the person was a "first class' merchant". Gilda would mean "guild", refering to the Merchant Guild.  See

I face a similar conundrum. The records from 1949 should have been microfilmed and available to the public, before Covid and before the new privacy regulations. I do not know the reason this was not done. At this stage these records from 1949 are awaiting to be micofilmed somewhere. I do not think it would be possible to order a copy.

Re: Dr Otto Rudolf Frank #germany

Hi Karen,

I suppose you already are familiar with the Archives of Baden Wurttemberg, where there is a lot of material available on the jewish community of Karlsruhe and surroundings. You should be able to find a lot of things there. I also would suggest you look at the Rosenthal collection at the Leo Baeck Institute - its coverage includes both Mannheim as well as Karlsruhe. A lot of these materials are online.

I noticed the following

Feel free to contact me and depending on what you are looking for I may be able to save you time with some pointers.

Raab Family in Hungary & Karlovy Vary, Czech #general #austria-czech #hungary

Sharon Ann Dror

Looking for Moritz Raab and his connection with the Raab Family

Just connected with a potential family member - we are both related to the Raab family but don't know which branch.

She shared with me that her family was very involved with the synagogue in Karlovy Vary, Czech around 1930's....

Her parents are Josef Raab and wife Hilde nee Simon, and Hilde's father Carl Simon were active and very close to the Rabbi. Josef's parents are Johanna Janka nee Goldstein and Moritz Raab. Josef's brother Sandor Raab as well.

Anyone have a connection with Karlovy Vary's Synagogue? We would love to learn more about this.

I am related to Chana Leah Raab who married to our family Benjamin Azaria Stampfer.

Chana Leah's siblings are Benjamin Zeev Wolf, Eliezar, Leah, Yehoshua, and Yetta.

She doesnt know anything about how Josef is related to the Raab's.

Please contact me if you have information about this family. Thank you in advance....

Dr Otto Rudolf Frank #germany

My Great Uncle, Otto Rudolf Frank was a judge in Mannheim then Karlsruhe when the Nazis demoted him. Finally, in 1939 he emigrated to Tegucigulpa in Honduras but killed himself shortly thereafter.
There has never been any evidence of what transpired and I am hoping that someone might have advice on pursuing any records. This information has become relevant again as I have just learnt of an unknown grandchild of Otto and the grandchild has only just learnt that Otto was his grandfather.
Any info. and direction would be greatly received.

Re: Relatives want to know - where are the coveted records? #general #lithuania #records

Michele Lock

Thanks for all the responses, including the private ones. I'm sure they'll help me finesse my way through these occasional uncomfortable moments.

With one exception, I haven't told a relative that their family lore is not true. I have generally said that all records may not be available, or that I'm still finding things, or that perhaps the records may not exist anymore. I have gently suggested that sometimes our immigrant forebears weren't entirely consistent with their recollections.

The one exception above was a man who I connected with via DNA testing, whose wife is a 3rd cousin once removed to me. I won't ever be meeting them, and though they shared a family history with me, I decided to tell them that the story of the fabulously wealthy great great grandfather Kalon who owned a large factory, married into the Russian nobility,  lived in St. Petersburg and who died in a carriage accident with his noble Russian wife - such a man did not exist, and that this story was complete fiction. I haven't heard from them since. {Whenever I hear the terms 'Czar', 'Russian nobillity' or 'St. Petersburg', I want to run for the hills}.

Great Donation of several sets of records from Khotin uezd #bessarabia #ukraine #records

Yefim Kogan

Dear Bessarabian researchers,  here are good news...

I want to let you know that our group received a terrific donation from Gabor Adam, manager of non-profit organization, genealogist, who lives in Romania.  Here is Gabor's Facebook pages:

We have received from Gabor already Death records for Khotin, Bessarabia  and Noua Sulita (Novoselitsa), Khotin uezd, Bessarabia.  Records are from 1930 to 1940 (several years are missing).  These records are in Romanian language and Gabor generously donated to us also translation of these records.   In a month or two these records will be ready and definitely will be uploaded to JewishGen in July of this year.

We also are working with Gabor to  help us getting more records from Khotin uezd of Bessarabia from interwar period.

Please let me know if you have questions.

All the best,

Re: What was the purpose of this document issued in Czarist Russia? -Pervia Gilda#russia #general

S. Silberg

My grandfather was born in Grodno when it was still part of the Russian Empire. His parents were Moishe and Brina KUJANSKY.

My grandmother, in an oral testimony, told us;

“Moishe was very wealthy and he got a certificate called a "Pervia Gilda" which permitted him to travel all over Russia. Usually not given to a Jew, but he got it because he was wealthy”.

I asked a friend who is fluent in Russian what Pervia Glilda means and her response was:

Pervia Gilda- is something like a first priority.

Pervia - is one. Gildia - is a group

I wondered whether anyone in the group as heard about this document. Even in her old age my grandmother was very clear on the name of the document so it was probably not a traditional passport/internal passport.

Thanks in anticipation.

USCIS Fee Schedule #announcements #records #usa

Jan Meisels Allen

I have previously posted about the USCIS fee schedule, the preliminary injunction posted in the Federal Register and President Biden’s Executive Order 14012 ‘‘Restoring Faith in Our Legal Immigration Systems and Strengthening Integration and Inclusion Efforts for New Americans.’’

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has posted its latest fee schedule G-1055,, which includes the Genealogy Fees. Form G-1041 is for Genealogy Index Search Request  $65.00 and form G-1041A is for the Genealogy Records request for EACH microfilm or hard copy file--$65.00  The $65.00 fees are not eligible for a fee waiver. The $65.00 fee is the same fee that was charged by USCIS before the proposed and final rule were promulgated under the Trump Administration—the ones the preliminary injunction stopped. Those fees would have increased to file Form G-1041 from $65 to $240, an increase of $175 (269 percent increase). The fee for Form G-1041A would increase from $65 to $385, an increase of $320 (481 percent).

It is expected that the Federal Register in the next day or so will also have this posting about the fee for USCIS forms.

To see previous postings about the USCIS and the fee increases,  go to the archives of the IAJGS Records Access Alert at: You must be registered to access the archives.  To register go to:  and follow the instructions to enter your email address, full name and which genealogical  organization with whom you are affiliated   You will receive an email response that you have to reply to or the subscription will not be finalized.
