Los Angeles Screening of My Grandfather's House documentary #lithuania

Eileen Douglas Israel <faithdouglas@...>

Dear Litvak/SIGers,

We are delighted to announce a Los Angeles screening of our documentary
My Grandfather's House at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles on Monday
night, September 19th at 7pm....sponsored by the LA Jewish Genealogical
Society. We hope Litvak/SIGers in the area can join us.

Below is the posting >from the LAJGS.------

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles presents the Los Angeles
premiere of the film:

"My Grandfather's House: The Journey Home"

Monday, September 19th, 7:00 PM
Skirball Cultural Center, Magnin Auditorium
2701 North Sepulveda Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90049

This personal documentary follows Eileen Douglas's determined search to
find her grandfather's house in Lithuania--the home he lived in and left
behind in 1911 when he fled, at 16, >from Kovno to America. Four decades
after his death, with only fragments to guide the way, the documentary
is Douglas's attempt to lift the veil of darkness and discover "where
it all began."

PROGRAM:

Before the screening, filmmaker Eileen Douglas will discuss the making of
the documentary, and, in particular, what compelled this personal quest.
The film will be followed by a Q & A with Douglas, co-producer/director
Ron Steinman, and Douglas' daughter Rachel Zients, of Los Angeles, who
also appears in the documentary.

SYNOPSIS:

Eileen travels >from New York City to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in
Washington, to her mother's attic in Syracuse, to the homes of relatives,
and, finally, with her daughter at her side, to the block in Kovno where
her grandfather once lived. Along the way she unexpectedly unlocks the
mystery of stories he never told, discovers the fate of family members
lost in the war, learns of the glory that once was Lithuanian Jewry,
finds living relatives missing for years in Siberia, and resurrects a
family shattered by the traumas of the 20th Century.

Our meetings are open to the public. Free of charge to JGSLA members, $5
charge for guests.

But I started wondering about the mechanics of these name changes. Could
Willie just start calling himself Edward without going through a legal name
change, without any repercussion for the rest of his life? He was Edward on
his marriage certificate and death certificate and Soc. Security. Could one
just decide they liked a different first name and to then use it without any
impact >from the fact that a different name was on his or her birth
certificate?
There is no law in the US or in the states, to the best of my
knowledge, making it necessary to obtain legal sanction for a name
change, or limiting one's right to call oneself what one wishes --
unless the change is made for purposes of fraud. To put it another
way, you can call yourself anything you like, even "50 Cent" if that
is what suits you, as long as you pay your taxes and other debts and
don't try to evade other legal obligations.

research in Israel #general

Martha LEV-ZION <martha@...>

I will be travelling to Israel for a week(18 - 25 September). I am
wanting to do some research regarding my family. Besides going to
Beit Hatfutsoth where else should I go. I am not looking for any
WWII records otherwise I would naturally go to Yad Vashem.
Welcome to Israel when you come, Jeff. The first stop in your
preparation for coming to Israel, or for going to any other place,
for that matter, is to look at the website of the genealogy society
of that place. On www.isragen.org.il, you will find a wealth of
material to aid your research. Make sure you take a look at the
section on Archives on the left hand side bar.

We look forward to welcoming you when you come. You might also check
out on the website which societies of the IGS are having meetings
when you will be here. We would love to see you amongst us!

Hi,
I have two sets of questions that I would appreciate some help =
with. The first concerns the reporting and recording of suicides in =
England at the beginning of the 20th century. According to my family's =
oral history, my grandfather MORRIS MILLER's first wife ALLKA committed =
suicide. Allka was alive and was living with Morris in London at the time
=
of the 1901 English census. Also, Morris married my grandmother ESTHER =
BOOK in London in January 1902, so Allka must have committed suicide some
=
time in the middle of 1901. However, I cannot find any record of her =
death in the GRO's Death Indexes for either 1901 or 1902. Were suicides =
excluded >from these records and, if so, is there any other place where =
they might have been recorded?
See this article "Mortality and political climate: how suicide rates have
risen during periods of Conservative government, 1901-2000" (M Shaw, D
Dorling, G Davey Smith)
http://www.shef.ac.uk/sasi/publications/2002/shaw_et_al_mortality_political_climate.pdf

The source for Table 1 Suicide rates per million 1901-1998 England and Wales
by prime minister is given as www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase dataset "Deaths
(per million population) >from injury and poisoning: external cause and year
of registration or occurrence, 1901-1998", which must clearly be based on
such records.

You might contact one of the authors of the article Dr M Shaw
mary.shaw@... who I am sure would be able to help you (Dept of
Social Medicine, Univ of Bristol).

You possibly need to contact the Family Records Centre
certificate.services@....

I can imagine that possibly the cause of death might not be accurately
recorded, but I find it difficult to imagine that the death would not be
recorded.
