Has anyone heard of a fareyen as a Jewish lodge? My Philadelphia BERENSON
grandparents apparently belonged to one, and they went to a picnic in Valley
Forge in 1909. I imagine it had a more formal title.

Thanks, Molly

Rieke Nash z''l #general

Stanley Diamond

Dear friends:

It is with a heavy heart and a deep feeling of sadness and loss
that I share with you the news of the passing of Rieke Nash of
Sydney, Australia after a long illness.

Rieke and husband Peter were regular attendees at the annual
conferences and all who had the opportunity to meet her knew
that they had encountered a wonderful lady in every sense.

As President of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Australia and
a devoted Jewish Records Indexing - Poland volunteer, Rieke was
a friend, colleague and mentor to countless researchers at home
and abroad. In her devotion to the role of JRI-Poland Wloclawek
Archive Coordinator for more than fifteen years, we have been
witness to Rieke's unique talents for collaboration and helpfulness.

As a family historian, Rieke was an indefatigable researcher,
traveling to archives around the world in her efforts to unravel her
family's ancestry.

On behalf of the executive committee and board of JRI-Poland, I
extend our deepest sympathies to Rieke's husband Peter and the
entire Nash family. May her memory be for a blessing and may
they know no further sorrow.

Legal petition filed against New York City Municipal Archives #general

Asparagirl <asparagirl@...>

Hi there. If you have any relatives or ancestors who were married in
New York City between 1908-1929, you may be interested in following a
new legal case that was just filed against the NYC Department of
Records and Information Services (DORIS), which is the parent
organization of the NYC Municipal Archives.

The case has been brought as an "Article 78" Petition, under the New
York State Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), and it seeks the public
release of the index to the 1908-1929 City Clerk's Office marriage
license and affidavits series.

This is NOT the same marriage records set as the better-known
1800's-1937 NYC Health Department marriage certificates, or its
"Brides Index" and "Grooms Index", which have been available on
FamilySearch microfilms and in searchable volunteer-created database
for several years.

Request for Help Translating Letter Yiddish/Judeo-German into English #austria-czech

Madeleine Isenberg

Hello SIGgers,

I try not to bother people too much but once in a while I need help.
In this case I have posted a letter on ViewMate, that I need
translated:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM42193

It is a letter written >from my great-uncle Arthur GOLDMAN to his
brother, Ben GOLDMAN who emigrated to the USA at the end of 1913. (My
martyred grandmother was their sister, married to Leopold GOLDSTEIN.)
It appears to be written more in Judeo-German than Yiddish. The
writing is very clear, but too complicated for me to translate
completely.

Arthur (aka Avram Yakov) inserts many family names that I recognize,
written in German script, and >from the content I may get a better idea
of family events and when the letter was actually written. I think he
is possibly reviewing the situation after the Holocaust. (Looks like
he had some kind of prostate operation!)

The family names of some of the people involved are: GOLDMAN,
STOTTER, TANDLICH, GOLDSTEIN, SUSSMAN

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.

Thank you very much in advance, and wishing everyone a Shana Tovah.

Biecz Cadastral Map 1850 just added to the Gesher Galicia Map Room:

http://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/biecz-1850/

A complete, full-color cadastral map of the entire town of Biecz
(Beitch, Beitsch, Baych, Baytsh, Beytch), surveyed and lithographed in
1850. This archive copy includes extensive redline revisions drafted
over the 1850 original, apparently for an 1876 edition, covering not
only the usual parcel and building changes but also a major re-routing
of the Ropa River through town to accommodate the arrival of an
important rail line in this province of the Austrian Empire; because
this map includes both the original and modified landscapes, it
captures a significant historical transformation of the town.

The map also shows a well-formed market square, three churches and
several Catholic cemeteries, a Jewish cemetery, a hospital, and
several named hamlets.
