Re: Marriage records #records

Sherri Bobish

Hi Sherri,

Lunna is today in Belarus.
https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/community.php?usbgn=-1945652

You can search:
https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Belarus/

It was common for marriages to not be recorded civilly, and extant records vary greatly by town / region.

You can search by town name and browse through those records.

When searching by surname it is best to do a phonetic or soundex search as names get spelled in variant ways.

Good luck in your search,

Sherri Bobish

Travel from Shtetll to Sea Port #ukraine

Ada Glustein

My family lived in a small shtetl near Uman, Russia (now Ukraine).  They were a large family and small groups each travelled to a different port of departure on ships that came to Canada, 1910 - 1913.  Does anyone know how much the train tickets would have cost?  Why they would have split up to go to different ports?  (Hamburg, Rotterdam, Antwerp).  I understand that agents came into the area to sell ship passages; did the cost also involve train transport to get to the boats?  How long would such travel have taken?  Would they have travelled in a different way?  Thank you for any info you can share.

Help deciphering a town name on passenger Manifest #records #belarus

Richard Gilbert

David,

It is not the easiest piece of text to read but I would tend to agree that it could be Kletzk.

As has already been suggested you will need to find some corroborative evidence either from the US or from Kletzk itself to confirm that this is where your ancestors left from.

One source that might help you are the passports that would have been issued to Esther and her son to facilitate travel internally within Russia.

I was able to find the internal passports from 1905 issued to my great great grandmother, my great grandmother and my great uncle, when they travelled from Kletzk to London, England.

Good Luck with your search.

Hello,
See the method for doing this with NY Southern District Court naturalizations at:
http://www.jgsob.org/projects/USNYSD.pdf

then use that methodology for Eastern District Court records, with references at the bottom of this page:

Help deciphering names on ship manifest #names #general #usa

lswikoff@...

I have been unable to decipher the name on the manifest listing for my great-grandfather, Simon (later Sam) Sobel, of the person he was joining (and who had paid his passage).  See below for the manifest page link to the document on Ancestry. On line 4, it lists "cousin" followed by a name, which Ancestry recorded as W Walter, although I'd be surprised if that's correct.  I'm reasonably certain the address is 25 Harrison Street, although I didn't find anything for this cousin when I looked at the1910 census record for that address (my great-grandfather arrived in 1908).  I don't know anything about my great-grandfather's relatives in the U.S., except for my grandmother and her brother, so I'd be grateful for any help figuring out this name..

Ancestry.com - New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957  (ctrl + click to follow link)

The above was my great-grandfather's second arrival at Ellis Island. He'd also come in 1905,  At that time, he listed his sister, whose name I read as Freide Breindl, who lived in Brooklyn as the person he was joining, Unfortunately her address is listed as a PO Box, and I have been unable to trace her with either that surname or with the surname Sobel.  Any suggestions that might lead to information about her would be most welcome.  See line 29 at

I'd appreciate a translation from Romanian to English (or as much as possible, given the quality of the photo) of this inscription on the reverse side of my great-uncle's gravestone. I tried online translation of the words I could make out but that didn’t work because most of them had multiple meanings, I assume based on context.

The photo is posted on ViewMate at https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM93223.  Please respond using the Viewmate form.  I realize the lighting makes some of the words/letters hard to see, but I'll be happy with anything that can be determined.

Re: Help deciphering family names and town name on passenger manifest #records #usa

Sherri Bobish

Adam,

I think I've found the family on the 1915 NY State Census.  Names / ages match up, as does year of arrival, and the fact that two of the children appear to be twins.
1915 census - 242 Broome St., Manhattan
None are naturalized.
Abram Stein, b. Russia, age 54
Gertie Stein, b. Russia, age 55
Sam & Bennie, age 21  (Schmere & Benze from manifest)
Oscar, age 19  (Chatzkel from manifest)

The manifest shows that their daughter, Leie Stein, (b. about 1892) naturalized in 1942.  Leie may have been married by 1915.

Good luck in your search,

Sherri Bobish

This article from 2017 seems to indicate that you can get a page copied from a hardcopy of the newspaper, if you have specific enough info on date / name, etc.  It includes contact info which hopefully is still current.
