Re: Wording on gravestone customs #names #general

Dahn Cukier

Hi,

Very few I have found since  1940 in Israel omit both family names.
Either the family name or father's family name.

One I found did not have the family name, a Rabbi with only his
title as known Mordechai of Bilgoray, the family name does not appear.

Another one, a widow, remarried, but is buried next to her first husband with
his family name.

I didn’t mean that Lasker was wrong but on documents  and vital records the handwriting can be misread and indexed incorrectly or put online incorrectly.

Thank you for some wonderful resources here. I have long wanted to put together a set of overlay maps for historic Poland that would work like those high school biology books we had in the USA in the 1960s.  I have the vision but not the minimal computer skills to do this.  Would anyone like to join me?

Also FYI an article on mapping ancestry Powell, Kimberly. "Mapping Your Ancestry With Google Maps." ThoughtCo, Feb. 16, 2021, thoughtco.com/map-adventures-with-google-1421977.

My Jewish aunt was a radical activist in a  conservative Tulsa in the  post-War years.  Among dozens and dozens of civic activities, she taught about the race riots at Tulsa University.  Here is a recording of her telling some amazing stories about the white denial situation in the 1960s.  https://www.voicesofoklahoma.com/interview/feldman-nancy/

Announcing the completion of the Ashkenazic Cultural Genography #1 showing how one modern Ashkenazi male matches up to a large database of ancient DNA samples, one archaeological era at a time. The resulting set of 14 graphic slides depict cultural affiliations stretching from the Mesolithic until the Renaissance.

Note that many of the cultural affinities shown in these slides will be present in any modern Ashkenazic individual (male or female). Each modern individual will also present unique variations on the basic pattern which cannot be standardized or predicted.

The findings are presented here for your viewing and educational pleasure:  https://1drv.ms/b/s!AuwT-4qnkJLBjgv-y61wNJCNQQH2?e=jnph42

Viewmate Translation Request -- Romanian #romania #records #translation

Hi,

I am hoping for a translation of the marriage record in the image at the following address:
If you are able, please respond using the online Viewmate form.

As you can see, it's a long marriage record, one of the longest I have ever seen. I'd be grateful for a full translation since the Google translator work we've attempted leaves us with questions about the different generations referred to.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide. This seems a key to unlocking a branch of the family that separated a while ago.

bjtranslations+genes@...

Thanks, Diane. I did consider that, but as the L occurs quite often (e.g. in the names Lloyd as well), it seems unlikely to be a misreading - the shape is the same.
Off-list, I've received a helpful suggestion that as his London address is a hotel and his profession diamonds, it's possible he was a visitor from South Africa so that might be the best place to look... but there is nobody relevant shown at https://www.ancestors.co.za/database/ALL-DBContent-results.php?term=Lasker&sqry= and the person running the site says historical records are not online: "
you will either need to go in personally to access the records [or pay me to do it]".

Re: Where to find Illinois Northern District Naturalization Records? #records

Marian

I suppose it could just be a street in Chicago.  But every version of this card I find online all come back to the same source, Soundex Index to Naturalization Petitions for the United States District and Circuit Courts, Northern District of Illinois and Immigration and Naturalization Service District 9, 1840-1950.. Microfilm Publication: M1285. NAID: 1160705. Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1787 - 2004, Record Group 85. National Archives at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois.

That index was created by the INS Chicago District, which for many years included 40+ counties in Wisconsin.  Note it comes from Record Group 85. NARA gave it the current title because they saw it only as a reference to court records.  You can find NARA's microfilm publication pamphlet for it here

Re: Nyir. Csabai #slovakia

Sherri Bobish

Sarah,

Try looking at:
https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/community.php?usbgn=-851125
You can see a list of towns within 30 miles of Csenger.

I see several towns there that begin with "Nyir" including Nyírcsaholy.  Perhaps the "b" in Nyir. Csabai is supposed to be an "h"?

I've seen stranger misspellings of town names.

Just a thought,

Sherri Bobish
