board of special inquiry record port of Philadelphia 1906 for Lena (Leie) Berlin (Eliasshewitz) #records #usa #general #lithuania

By chance I came across a record in Ancestry  of the board of special inquiry of the port of Philadelphia in 1906 regarding an entry record of the wife of Benjamin Berlin, that lived in Chicago, Illinois, using a passport with her maiden name rather than her married name. It tied all the family names and the places of origin and where they were living with the circumstances.of our ancestors coming to the USA at that time. The separation of the members of the family and poor resources comes to light clearly during the inquiry.

A reason why Shoshana Glickman's husband's family, Living in England,
was listed on his great-grandfather's American census forms could have
been that the great-grandfather, with poor language skills, quite
misunderstood the census question. He may have thought that he was
required to give details of his family, rather than of the inhabitants
of his house and given the names himself.

Gary asked about the OAC-790 form received from Social Security.  This form was the request for the Earnings Report within SSA.  It is no longer used.

Online references for the codes (which may have changed over time) are -

Re: Perplexing Mystery #records #usa

I'm still trying to work out how and why the whole family, wife and children, were included in my husband's great-grandfather's census entries in 1895 and 1910 in Connecticut.
The great-grandfather was definitely there in 1910, and could well have been there in 1895, but none of the rest of the family remembered being there. And there are no records of their arrival.
In fact his wife is quoted as saying that she'd never go to the US as she'd travelled enough from Europe to Ireland to Manchester, England and to Glasgow, Scotland!
Anyone have any ideas?

In order to regain citizenship, various proofs must be provided, such as proof of origin and proof of main residence in the territory of present-day Austria before the expulsion.
I have already carried out several projects for regaining citizenship. You are welcome to send me the available data. I will be happy to analyze this data and recommend the next steps.

Do you know for sure the name was Schmiel?  A handwritten Schmiel can look quite similar to Schmerl - if your knowledge comes only from a manuscript, then name could have misinterprted. They look quite similar.

In addition to all of the above, it may be worth checking the census date, and comparing the Gregorian to the Jewish.

I have a family member - a child - appearing in the 1930 census twice.  Once at grandma and grandpa's -- on the 2nd day of Pessach,  i.e. the day after the second Seder.   The families lived within a 37 minute walking distance (according to google maps).  Two weeks later ,the same boy was at his parents home when the census takers came.

And yes there are also mistaken genders.

Social Security OAC-790 #usa #general

Gary Blumsohn

I applied to get a copy of the SS5 application form for a social security number.  In response, they sent me the Form OAC-790, saying that this is the only document available and this is the form that was submitted.  It was submitted in 1970, when the applicant was just about to turn 65.  She was a Holocaust survivor who had lived in the US since 1950, though she was disabled, and I suspect she never worked in the US.

I’m curious about 2 things:

  1. Under “Type of Claim” it says “L”.  What does this signify?
  2. In a “Remarks” box, it says “MI     X”

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Go to  (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness).  They have volunteers who do these things for people. I used to do it before I moved from New Orleans.  Click on the state and take it from there.  It gives the random acts that each volunteer will do and it contacts them for you.  Good luck!

The name Shmaryahu and Schmiel are two distinctive names. While Shmaryahu שמריהו is a Hebrew name, Schmiel is the Yiddish variant of Shmuel, or Samuel in English.

In order to help you further, we would need more details: full name, date and place of birth of your father and grandfather, where they lived and at what times.
What steps did you take util now to get documents? Do you have your grandfather's birth certificate?
