Seeking Descendants of Doris Levine born 14 July 1928 in New York #usa

Chilady18

We are seeking info on Doris Levine born in New York on 14 July 1928 or her descendants.  Doris' parents Zendel and Elke Lejfer and grandmother Frejda Lejfer arrived in New York on the SS Zeeland in January 1921 originally from Wysoko, Grodniensk. They were joining husband/father Szewl Lejfer Lewin in New York.  Zendel Lejfer changed his name to Sam Levine and moved from New York to Chicago some time after Doris' birth. If you have info on this family I would appreciate it if you would contact me.

Re: tracking a single female immigrant relative #usa

My great grandmother came to the US and died shorty after her arrival.  Four granddaughters were named after her.  One was "Yetta"  The other three
used "Eunice" which a somewhat popular name at the time.

Judith Franzin 's book A Translation Guide to 19th Century Polish -Language Civil Registration Documents, is one resource that I have used.  Another is to join Facebook's Tracing the Tribe group and post your document there, and someone probably will translate it.  There also is a translators group there.  Regardless of how you see social media - the genealogy groups there are worth being a member - and membership is free.  Other groups are Jewish Genealogy Portal and Jews from Poland.

A postscript to my earlier response .... I mentioned that many thousands of those Germans and Austrians who arrived in London were 'registered' at Bloomsbury House, including a large number of young women who then went into domestic service. The files created were lost after the war, but in the late 1980s a significant number, relating to about 35,000 individuals, were fortuitously rediscovered. These are now in the custody of World Jewish Relief (HQ in London) and have been digitally scanned and indexed. Amongst them was the file on my mother, Karola Grünebaum (DOB 12 May 1921, Offenbach), It is extremely interesting and revealing, not only including papers related to her arrival in 1939, but also to what happened to her in subsequent years up until 1943. WJR is keen to link the files with the descendants of the people who are documented, so it is well worth getting in touch to find out if your relative's file is one of those that has been found.

As others have mentioned, the National Archives (Kew, London) also may hold significant information, for example related to internment, naturalisation and the '1939 Register for England and Wales' (equivalent to a census).

Re: Translation needed from Romanian #translation

Hi Deborah,
The testimony is not about Kopai Gorod but of the sufferings of the Jews deported to Transnistria. Kopai Gorod is mentioned in a short paragraph:
" Also in Moghilev we were put in houses destroyed by bombardments, After a short while, the gendarms (Romanian police forces, my note) took us to Kopai Gorod, Romanka. There, we were put in a big stable. After a short while, the typhus caused ravages. The dead corpses remained for days among the living people, there was no one to bury them. About 300-400 people in this stable died. From there we were taken to...."

Can anyone give me the web site address for the St. Petersburg archives? Do you know if they accept and answer questions in English? I'd like to find out information about my grandfathers time in the Tsar's army and the canton schools.

Anthony Grenville, who was editor of the refugee organ, AJR Information has written a well-researched book   :Jewish Refugees from Germany and Austria in Britain 1933-1970" published by Vallentine Mitchell in 2010, which gives a wide and extensive overview of the subject.

In Conservative and Reform congregations, it’s called “Hebrew School”.  Most Orthodox kids go do “Day School”.   Some Chabad groups call their schools Cheder.

Vivian, I happened to come across two details in your discussion which might have a connection to my family.  My Grandfather, Anton Lanye, was born in Nagyvarad, Hungary in 1890. His mother’s name was Serena Grosz (married name: Loevinger).  Is there a chance your Grosz family is related?

ViewMate translation request - Polish #translation

Rod MacNeil

I've posted a vital record in Polish for which I need a translation. It is on ViewMate at the following address ...
Please respond via the form provided on the ViewMate image page.

This is a 1850 Kolomyya birth record for Itzig Weisman which was only registered in 1871.  There are extensive notes in microscopically small print that I assume provides some explanation for registering the event 21 years after the birth.  This may be my great-great grandfather.  The date fits well.

Thank you very much.
