Re: Which (Chasidic?) group do the clothes indicate, if any #galicia #austria-czech

The white "over pants", that are described, appear to be a "tallit katan", a (small tallis), worn by religious men. You can observe the tzitzit hanging down in the photo. It might also help to know from what city the family lived, as different chassidic sects were prominent in different cities. Is the man's hat symbolic of a particular group?  I've never seen that type hat as a religious symbol. I think that they just got dressed up for a formal photo.

Professionals who match individuals in photographs #photographs

Hi, I have several photos from different sources and taken decades apart that contain individuals that may or may not match. If I could rule in or rule out a match, it would be very helpful to my research. Are there professionals with forensic expertise and credentials who do such analyses? Can anyone point me?

Thank you,

Re: Bednovitch family from Zambrow who became Bedno in Chicago #general #usa #poland

Sandy Levin

Looking to connect with relatives of my grandmother, ANNA BEDO(WICZ) who was
from ZAMBROW and arrived in Chicago. Her father’s name was Israel Zvi. She
married Sam Levin, was born Sam Yellin in Wysockie Maz, probably around 1890.
They married in 1913 in Chicago. Anna passed away in 1967, Sam in 1968. They
had three children, Ida, Sol and Jack. Anna had at least three brothers, Joe, Jake
(Jacob) and Morris and a sister Sarah. The three boys all arrived in 1904 on
different sailings from Bremen.. JACOB was born around 1884 and died in
Chicago in 1964. Jake married Ann Ritholz. Jake was president of King Optical. Ann
died in 1978. Irving, Jules, Edward, Howard were their children. JOE also lived in
Chicago and is buried in Waldheim. He was married to Fannie and they had one
child (Hyman/Howard) born in 1918. Joe either died young or was divorced from
Fannie. Howard was in the music business and passed away in 2006. He had two
daughters. MORRIS was born around 1880. He never married. Morris's 1915 draft
card lists as next of kin Joseph Bedno with an address on Francisco Avenue in
Chicago. Morris is also buried in Waldheim. SARAH married Max Zolkewitz. Sarah
died in 1963. She and Max had four children, Carl, Jock/Jacob, Hy, and Ann.
Ann married Lou Slutsky. They had no children.
Any information you can share would be appreciated.

Event in Repedea Romania November 17, 1884 #romania

Robin Schwartz

I just came across records of the deaths of two toddlers in the Worem (Vurm) family in Repedea, Romania ages 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 both occurring on November 17, 1884.  Although it is possible there was some family accident or perhaps (although unlikely) an illness that took them both on the same day, I am wondering if there was an "event" in the town that led to their deaths.  Any ideas on how to pursue this?
Thank you
Robin Schwartz

Historian request: Germany, England and Australia KT/Dunera/Australia WW2 #general #germany #unitedkingdom

We are looking for an individual (historian) to assist in compiling the history of our father’s course from his upbringing through his discharge from the Australian army in WWII through 1946.  We want to understand detail and additional context of his life experience. Hi passed in 1974 and our mother passed in 2007..Neither of them talked about it and are just finding out some details of his life.

Some brief background:
Our father who was born in Cologne (Koln). We believe he left Berlin at age 16 in late Dec. of 1938 via the Kindertransport train escaping anticipating Nazi persecution.  His family had to stay behind.
He arrived in Harwich England in Jan. 1939.  He was graciously taking care of by a family in Northern England , Thrilby where he worked on a farm from Feb 1939 through May of 1940.  Once France fell to Nazi Germany around that time, there was great fear of a Britain invasion.
He was classified as an "enemy alien" and was subsequently transported to Australia sailing on the HMT Dunera embarking from Liverpool on July 10, 1940 and reaching Australia on Sept. 6th/9th 1940.  We have many source documents from all three countries but need a trained individual with access to archival data to fill in the “back story” and details reaching back to Germany when his father was born in 1882.

Anybody with knowledge and interest would be welcomed. This is a project that means a great deal to our family since we want to preserve his legacy for our family in addition to paying tribute to those that helped our family survive. We have some wonderful people already helping us fill in some details but need help filling in some gaps of the three continents life took him.

Please email me and I will act as the coordinator for this project.

Alan Turing is held in such high regard in the UK that his portrait is printed on the new £50 banknotes which came into circulation last Wednesday (25th June 2021).  A small recompense for the tragic story of his committing suicide following his being found guilty of the crime of being a homosexual.

Sharon Ann Dror

Thank you so much! Got some info - Fruma nee Greenberg married to Zvi Hirsh Atotsky and they have a son Hyman (Haim) who married to Eleanor Levine. They have no children. Fruma's father is David and mother is Yuder. I will check if Michael's parents are also Fruma and Zvi so Hyman has a brother???

It looks like Michael changed his name to Harry and married to Rose nee Bookbinder who ended up killing herself. No children.

United Kingdom's Bletchley Park--Code Breakers Names #unitedkingdom #announcements #records

Jan Meisels Allen

During World War ll Bletchley Park was the top-secret home of the World War ll  code breakers. Some of you may have seen the movie-- The Oscar-nominated movie, The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley,  or read the book about the Enigma Machine or the Code Breakers or heard of Alan Turing.  There is now a website Included in their website is the roll of honor where you can search names giving results of surname, given name service/rank/gender and summary of service. There were nearly 10,000 people who worked for the organization. I have put in the names Goldberg, Goldstein, Cohen, Freedman, Levy and they all appear.

Thank you to Jeanette Rosenberg, OBE JGS Great Britain  for sharing the information with us.

Ben Kempner

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada (JGSSN) invites you to a Zoom meeting at 1:00 p.m. (Pacific Daylight Time) on Sunday, July 18: "Here Comes the 1950 U.S. Census! What To Expect" with Joel Weintraub.

To request a Zoom link, please complete this short form, which can also be found on our Meetings webpage.

Members of JGSSN can attend for free.  Non-members can either pay $5.00 on the Donate webpage.   Or you can pay $20 for a subscription to the 2021 series of outstanding speakers (see below).  More details can be found on our Meetings page.  To become a member and sign up for the 2021 series, go to the Membership page.

Session Description:

The U.S. 1950 census will become public on April 1, 2022. Joel will prepare us for its debut by covering what is a census, who uses the census, census caveats, the 1940 census, how the 1950 census was taken, training of enumerators, enumerator instruction book, census sampling, 1950 schedule, 1950 Housing Schedule, census questions, post enumeration codes, 1950 undercount, and a summary of the results. Joel will conclude with a short discussion on his and Steve Morse’s 1950 census locational tools, online right now at the website.  Those 1950 utilities took 8 years to produce with the help of under 80 volunteers, involve 230,000 or so searchable 1950 ED definitions with about 80,000 more small community names added, and street indexes for over 2,400 1950 urban areas that correlate with 1950 census district numbers.

About Joel Weintraub:

Joel Weintraub, PhD, a New Yorker by birth, is an emeritus Biology Professor at California State University, Fullerton. He became interested in genealogy over 20 years ago, and volunteered for 9 years at the National Archives and Records Administration in southern California.
