Re: Austro-Hungarian army records? #galicia #poland #hungary #records #austria-czech

Andreas Schwab

JRI Poland has indexed the records for these places.
http://jri-poland.org
However, 1932 is too recent, the records are not available online for the general public, and 1857 is too early for Sambor, records start at 1862. Maybe there are marriage records or records for the children.

Austro-Hungarian army records? #galicia #poland #hungary #records #austria-czech

T R

My great grandfather was a conductor, conscripted in the Austro-Hungarian army.
He was born in 1857, Sambor, now Ukraine, and died in 1932, Przemysl, now Poland.
Does anyone know where I might find such a record?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Please consult both Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland by Jan T. Gross and the more recent The Towns of Death: Pogroms Against the Jews by Their Neighbors by Mirosław Tryczyk and me (the translat0r). You will find that there was a peripheral German participation in the burning of Jedwabne Jews in a barn. The pogroms were organized and carried out by the Polish neighbors. Similar pogroms in another dozen localities around Jedwabne are described and discussed as well the historical, religious, and political background for the events.

ViewMate Challenge: Dating a old list of names #galicia #translation

Yaron Wolfsthal

Dear Group, this is a difficult one - old polish text in Latin style !

Pls see this:  https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM94398

It's a cover page of a list of peasants in the Galician town of Husiatyn (Tarnopol District).

I'm asking for help in translating this, and even more I am very interested in DATING this document.

While there's a date ("1789") in the text, the bottom of the page seems to say "1843".  The translation of the text may help figure this out. Is this an 1789 document?     or an 1789-18XX document?

Thank you very much.

Re: SAIONZ family in Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA #poland #russia #usa

David Ziants

Thank you Dianne for the tip. I wasn't fully using alternate spellings/soundex etc when searching the name. Someone off list helped me with this, and I now have her grave stone photo:-

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/199864488/sara-zelenkofske

The patronymic is rendered Melech rather than Elimelech as on Simon's stone - but these are essentially the same name (with Elimelech being more formal).

Now, am wondering whether their brother, Victor, whose name appears on the manifest (actually 1909 and not 1919 a correction a second time), changed his family name to ZION - in which case Molly would have been his wife and this appears on census and other records this way. Then he died 1960.Yet, we have a Victor ZAJONE (d 1946) in Pennsylvania Death Index, 1906-1964

Name Victor Zajone

Death Jan 11 1946;   Philadelphia

Certificate number 10101

For the grave stone of Victor Zion who died in 1960, I would need to contact the cemetery for the location of the grave, so I can fill in a request on Find-a-grave etc.. There seems to be less information around concerning the one who died in 1946.

Thank you for your continued input.

Have you tried various spelling options when you search phonetically and do not use the exact option.  Have you checked JOWBR
And FindAGrave which can be very useful.

I wish to thank everyone for their replies so far (some also off list).

I have tried to reply to each person, personally. As a general follow up, first of all, the crop of ship manifest that I sent was from 1919 and not as I stated, and thank you to those who noticed and pointed this out and this changes the perspective a bit.

I was unable to find Sarah ZILINKOWSKY's grave on Billion Graves or Find-a-Grave - is there anyone, please, with additional search possibilities?

From the 1910 census that Michele quoted below, it seems that Simcha started using the name Simon ZAYON, and I found the grave stone of Simon D. ZAYON in Lakewood:- http://data.jewishgen.org/imagedata/jowbr/USA-00048/H3753.JPG

It mentions on his stone the names of the children. It seems that his wife was no longer alive, otherwise I am sure that she also would have also been mentioned. In any case, from this, his father's name was Elimelech - a name I am going to try and follow up on Eastern European archives through Jewishgen and JRI-Poland.

Bad Koenig Hesse Germany to Koln Germany 1880's to 1920s-Request for information #germany #general

ehrmann.paul@...

Hello,
I am doing research on my Grandfather Hugo=Hirsch Ehrmann.  He was born in Bad Koenig Hesse in 1882/died 1970 and moved to Koln Germany sometime from that point fwd either with his family or after he married my grandmother Elizabeth who was born in 1889/died in 1956...His Father was Issac and Mother Elsa.  I am interested about the town he lived and the possibly reasons he may have moved from BK to Koln based on the historical town or world events if any.  I am told that it was small town of about 100 Jews at that time. The towns synagogue was burned down in Nov 1938 during the nazi Night of Broken Glass.. His older brother Moses and younger sister Bertha perished in the Kovno Ghetto in Lithuania in 1941.
Thank you

Newly-Discovered Tomaszow Lubelski Book of Residents - Thousands of Record Extractions Now Available #poland #records #announcements

Sinai (Sonny) PUTTER

Jewish Records Indexing – Poland has now made available translated extractions of the newly-discovered Tomaszow Lubelski Book of Residents.  It’s a game-changer for Tomaszow Lubelski and Lublin Region researchers!

Each record entry in the Tomaszow Lubelski Book of Residents includes surnames, given names, fathers’ names, mothers’ names and maiden names, date and town of birth, civil status, occupation, and prior residence.  Many entries contain comments on movements into and out of Tomaszow Lubelski and changes of status updated from prior Books of Residents.

Each page of the Book of Residents is a different address, with occupants listed like a U.S. Census - head of household, then spouse, then children.  The Comments section lists changes that have occurred since the last iteration, as people move, marry, or die.  The line items include dates and places of birth and the names of both parents.  Each page seems to outline a family record page in miniature!

In my brief time working with these extractions, I found that the Books of Residents appear to capture the people who otherwise avoided civil registration of their birth, marriage, and death events.  The Comments in the extractions which track movements of people into and out of Tomaszow Lubelski were incredibly helpful in learning where to look for records outside of Tomaszow Lubelski.

The Tomaszow Lubelski Book of Residents records-extraction project covers years from 1893 to 1930.  Individual entries were modified as events occurred in the period.  The newest installment now available includes 5470 entries and 1556 different surnames and variations of surnames.

When completed, the project is expected to extract about 13,000 unduplicated entries from these Books of Residents.

You can receive all the entries for your families by supporting the Tomaszow Lubelski Book of Residents records-extraction project.

By becoming a qualified contributor to the Tomaszow Lubelski Book of Residents records-extraction project, you will be eligible to receive all the entries for your families that are now available, plus all future entries as new installments are released.
