ViewMate translation request - Russian #translation #poland #russia

Greg Tuckman

Hello everyone,
I've posted a vital record in Russian for which I need a translation. It is on ViewMate at the following address ...

Marriage record of GERTLER - BLUMENSZTOK:  https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jewishgen.org%2Fviewmate%2Fviewmateview.asp%3Fkey%3DVM94411&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cfbec6bb6176749257cfc08d9470390e3%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637618902910650752%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=0gBICrA1tsCe%2B6AcbwDKPR0wftyvKBrhYfroVY2kSOI%3D&reserved=0

Re: Godparents? #galicia

Gail H. Marcus

To add another complication--my parents always told me that one great-aunt and great-uncle had been designated as my godparents.  I also had never heard of this being a Jewish thing, so I always wondered if my parents were just trying to adopt an American custom.

The facts in my case are a little different than the ones above, so some of the responses don't "fit," and I wonder if there is any other explanation.  The facts in my case are:  1) this all happened in the U.S., 2) I am female, so it has nothing to do with a bris, and 3) the couple was indeed childless, but they were also an older couple, so there was no expectation of them having children.

I've also thought that godparents were supposed to care for a child if anything happens to the parents, but when I was born, all 4 of my grandparents were living and my great-aunt and -uncle were in the same age range as my grandparents, so I don't know why they would have expected someone other than my grandparents to raise me.  (And at least one set of grandparents probably had the means.)

I don't want to hijack someone else's question, but I was wondering if there were any explanations that would make sense for both Nikki's case and mine.

Azriel Zvi Ben Yehoshua Zev
Zvi in Yiddish is Hirsch
Zev in Yiddish is Wolf
Hence the name Azriel Hirsch son of Yehoshua Wolf

Not a good enough detective to find this file, plugging 94416 into Viewmate gets bupkis. Can you post a link?

Yael,
There are several family trees, managed by different people, on both Geni and MyHeritage showing Bodanskys married to Gunsbergers.  Have you checked either of those sites yet?

Bonjour,
Savez vous si votre Famille Markus a vécu a  Suwalki? Pologne ?

Do you like, I write the same in English?
Cordialement.

To add to the above, which is correct, an alternative explanation:  at times another - often younger (or childless) couple is also involved.  The wife will take the baby from the mother (who is in the woman's gallery) will hand him to her own husband, who will then hand him to the Sandek.  This couple are the "kvatters" - and preforming this role is supposed to make sure they will have children of their own.

I see "google translate" translates kvatter to godfather - so maybe that's what happened when the document was translated.

Moses may have been Hersch Leib's uncle - same generation as his mother.

Hi Rachel,

I found information regarding family members who unfortunately did not make it back from the camps including prisoner numbers on the following site :

If I remember correctly you have to create a username profile but it is free.

Hi All

Re. Brothers Moses Markus MARK and Mendel Markus MARK, sons of Samuel.

These names are listed in the 1845 Polangen Military List on the All Lithuanian Revision List Database (ALD), archival reference: LSHA/35 /2 /24/18

I'm pretty sure that Moses is my gg'gf.  His daughter seems to have had the maiden name MARKUS.

1) Please can you contact me if you think you are related to this mid 1800s Palanga / Polangen family so that we can see how our DNA matches.

2) The family's ages are provided in the original military list (see attached).  Who do I contact in order to have them added to the ALD?

Thanks and best wishes,

View Mate Mystery Booklet - Identification & Translation #translation

Sniderlh

Years ago I found a teeny (5" x 2.5") accordion-folded booklet amidst my Dad's belongings.  The cover is impossible to 'see' and looks almost like it got wet & molded, at some point in time.  It is filled with intriguing, odd drawings/symbols on a couple of it's ten pages, and writing that I can't make heads or tails of.  I have posted two pages On View Mate --- #94416 & 94417, and would greatly appreciate if anyone has any idea about what it is, and/or what it says.  I can post (or send to an individual) the rest of the pages, if someone can break the code on these pages, and is, like me, interested in the rest of the story. . .  so to speak.

I decided to stop wondering about something important enough for my Dad to hold onto throughout his life, and to ask for help.  Let see what good detectives are out there among the many knowledgeable people from far & wide in this group!  Any assistance would delight me, and I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Need assistance in translating from Hebrew - Is it Azriel Z'ev Ben Yehoshua Zvi?  I know it is not Yisrael. It is Azreil (from other records), but other records have his name as Azriel Girsch son of Yehoshua Wolf (or sometimes Shaya Volf / Osvey Volf).

Re: Question about ZATULOVSKY Family Photo from Ukraine circa 1909 #ukraine

Nina Tobias

Here is one possible scenario as found in my own family. My paternal grandfather died when my father was barely a year old. My grandmother remarried a widower who was the father of several teenage children. So perhaps the lady in question is the child from a first marriage of Aron or Malka.

As to the seemingly short hair. perhaps it is pulled back into a bun, then a style not uncommon.

Re: Trying to figure out where in the Russian Empire my grandfather was born! Confusing location ("Limyazov") on his naturalisation papers in the UK #translation #ukraine #russia #unitedkingdom

Sherri Bobish

Yael,

Have you searched for Limyazov at:
https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp
Do a "fuzziest" search from the drop down menu.

Try searching for old records of surname LAZOFSKY at:
https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/all/

I suggest doing a soundex or phonetic search on the surname.

Are there records from The U.K. for family members that might give their town of birth, i.e. marriage, military, death records?  Perhaps another record may have a better spelling of the town name.

Good luck in your search,

Sherri Bobish

Re: Question about ZATULOVSKY Family Photo from Ukraine circa 1909 #ukraine

Sherri Bobish

Felissa,

Are there any census records that exist for their town at that time?  That may indicate if a nanny was living with them.

She could be a girl they hired, or she could be a relative that needed the work.  We really can only conjecture unless some record exists of the inhabitants of their home at that time.

Was the family well-to-do enough to keep a nanny?

About her hair, it is hard for me to tell if her hair is short, or just pulled back in a severe style.  Either way, it may be just personal style choice, or a specific reason, i.e. lice?

Good luck in your search,

Sherri Bobish

Searching for Information on Rabbi Samuel Miller of Scranton, Pennsylvania #usa #records

N. Kotz

I am researching my husband's great grandfather, Rabbi Samuel Miller. The few records I have found thus far indicated that he was in Scranton, Pennsylvania around 1883-1093 but I have not been able to find him in the 1900 US Census. I am trying to determine his birth and death dates as well as the name of his wife and any other children besides the following.

What I do know is that he officiated at the wedding of his daughter, Esther, to David Kotz on December 15, 1909, in Wilkes-Barre, PA.  I have a wedding registry record as well as a wedding announcement regarding the marriage.

According to an article from The Tribune of Scranton dated 11 March 1903,  another daughter, Fannie died by suicide. This information is corroborated by the listing of Fannie's death in the Record of Deaths of Scranton PA for March of that year. According to that record, Fannie died at the State Hospital in Scranton.

He may have also had a daughter named Rose.

Thank you all in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide.
