Re: reconciling difference between family lore and Arolsen Archive information #france #holocaust

shamue@...

The answer id very simple as I know from my father story and historical facts. The prisoners of Auschwitz started on January 1945 the so-called “death march” into Germany and those who stay alive arrived also to Mauthausen where they were liberated by the USA army on 6th May 1945. Check again the Arolsen archives as they should have the personal liberation details.

Hi,
Not a direct answer to your question, but your family lore and the document you found don't necessarily contradict. Your uncle may have spent time in more than one camp. Actually some people, especially those fit for work, were often transferred from one camp to another 5,6,7 times across Europe. Perhaps as the ITS digitizes more of its holdings you will find his name in other lists as well.

Re: Brothers Moses Markus and Mendel Markus ben Samuel MARK (MARKUS) - 1845 Polangen Military List: 1) Are you related. 2) Who can add their ages to the ALD? #lithuania #general

Bonjour Evelyne
Bien cordialement, Joyaa

Hello Evelyne
I have received a number of messages like yours, asking whether my MARKUS family are related to theirs, but unfortunately MARCUS/MARKUS is a very common surname.
My question relates to a family who lived on the Baltic Coast (Palanga, Kretinga, Courland) in the middle of the 19th century.
If you have done a DNA test, you will be able to see if your DNA matches mine to any significant amount on ancestry / FTDNA / MyHeritage / Geneanet.
All good wishes, Joyaa Antares

How To Find A Date Of Death In NYC Prior To 1935/SSDI? #records #usa

Martin Kaminer

Hello All -

My father is nearly 90 and has just worked out that his mother had an older sister who may have perished, with her child, in a back-alley abortion, probably between 1930 and 1935. Tragically for all, but not atypically, her existence was kept secret after her death. I found her easily in the 1930 census right there in The Bronx with my grandmother and their parents. Finding the date or even the year of her death is proving more difficult.  My Dad was born in 1934 and believes this to have happened around the time of his birth, though he's not certain. I submitted a request to the NYC Dep't of Records to search all boroughs for the years 1930-1935 but as I don't have much info to give them I'd like to continue to explore on my own. I'm finding nothing in SSDI (which starts in 1935) nor in the New York, U.S., Death Index, 1852-1956.  I don't know much about the latter database but am perplexed as to why she wouldn't appear there.
My ultimate aim is to order a death certificate to shed a little light on this sad tale.  Any information I can find about the time and place of her death will aid in that.  I welcome your suggestions.
Martin Kaminer

No one has mentioned what denomination of Judaism their family was part of. I wonder if Reform Judaism had a period in which it used godparents, maybe around the time when worship was moved to Sundays and there were no Bar/Bat Mitzvot.

Re: 1809 Baden and Palatinate Name Adoption Lists #names #germany

Thanks Daniel for you contribution to this matter.

My major interest on the left shore of the Rhine is Frankenthal, and the name adoption list is in the municipal archives and I have some transcribed version.

My second place is Ellerstadt. I have searched bmd records for Ellerstadt at the Standesamt in charge in Wachenheim/Weinstr. All the records are there from the beginning of the French administration (~1798). In some places the name adoptions are among them, but not so for Ellerstadt or the neighboring communities which are also part of the Wachenheim Standesamt. Nobody there had any idea where they could be.

Another blank spot is a burial list for the Wachenheim Jewish cemetery which served many neighboring communities. Of course this is not connected to the recording by a Standesamt, but also on this matter nobody seems to have any idea where this could be.

reconciling difference between family lore and Arolsen Archive information #france #holocaust

Aline Petzold

Hello all:
I have been researching the background of my paternal uncle, Daniel Sternberg, ( my father's oldest brother).  Through the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and the Arolsen Archives in Germany, I found that he was interned at  Mittelbau, a subcamp of Auschwitz #2.  I have  recently learned that Daniel had a daughter, who is still living.  She was told that her father was a prisoner at Mauthausen in Austria.  I am wondering how I can determine whether this information was "family lore"  or if my Uncle Daniel did in fact spend time at Mauthausen  and if so, when and how long?  Thanks for your help.

Escape from Vienna, role of Chinese Consul Feng Shan Ho #austria-czech

Update: There are a number of interesting video links about the “Chinese Schindler,” HO Feng-shan 何凤山 (surname=Ho, sometimes romanized as He). He was a Chinese Nationalist diplomat based in Europe who processed visas for Jews in Europe so they could escape to Shanghai  https://youtu.be/-9Gybo1Cl0s, and another video made by his daughter at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW5k21o4ocM&fbclid=IwAR12NP2RR0mbNN2ALDA33EBAZ7aWf0epg2wBb43DChLqcdFXGt8aq8N1HKA

HO Feng Shan’s son was the late Monto Ho 何曼德, a very famous virologist at University of Pittsburgh. Frieda Silverman Khotin Bessarabia born circa 1850 died in Khotin circa 1938 #bessarabia

Marilyn Levinson

Hello fellow researchers
I am just beginning my research into the Silverman side of my family.  Specifically Frieda Silverman was my great grandmother married to Jossel Fixler and they had nine children.  Three remained behind in Europe (Russia, Romania) and six came to the United States.  These six include my grandmother Goldie Fixler Wallach and her five brothers, Max, Ben, Sam, Louis, and Nathan.  I am having good luck researching my Fixler family, but I cannot get started with Frieda Silverman.  I have looked on jewishgen sites, contacted individuals who might be related, and looked at many revision lists.  I have nothing.  I wonder if anyone might recognize any of these names and help me get started with my Silverman research.  I realize the last name may be Zilberman or Silberman.  Thank you for your help.

Re: Godparents? #galicia

Gail H. Marcus

To add another complication--my parents always told me that one great-aunt and great-uncle had been designated as my godparents.  I also had never heard of this being a Jewish thing, so I always wondered if my parents were just trying to adopt an American custom.

The facts in my case are a little different than the ones above, so some of the responses don't "fit," and I wonder if there is any other explanation.  The facts in my case are:  1) this all happened in the U.S., 2) I am female, so it has nothing to do with a bris, and 3) the couple was indeed childless, but they were also an older couple, so there was no expectation of them having children.

I've also thought that godparents were supposed to care for a child if anything happens to the parents, but when I was born, all 4 of my grandparents were living and my great-aunt and -uncle were in the same age range as my grandparents, so I don't know why they would have expected someone other than my grandparents to raise me.  (And at least one set of grandparents probably had the means.)

I don't want to hijack someone else's question, but I was wondering if there were any explanations that would make sense for both Nikki's case and mine.
