Check out this family in 1930, living in the Bronx:

Max Mabich 65 Head
Anna Mabich 52 Wife
Jean Mabich 19 Daughter
William Mabich 22 Son
Florence Mabich 17 Daughter

The original image is hard to read, but the first names and ages match
other censuses.

Re: Listing as an Alien Trader #poland

info@...

Although my background is Jewish from Staszow poland and has been for 7 generations. However, my DNA (recent.within 300 years) is 2.5% Vietnamese. My great Grandfather listed his father on the 1921 Toronto Census as being born in China. China may have been a 'catchword' for Vietnam, as Russia was the catchword for Belarus or The Ukraine. That means that my 3rd Great Grandfather was a trader in the Far East. Some traders would stay for many years and sometimes they entered into an agreement with a local Vietnamese family. Morals were different and Fathers would offer their (reportedly) willing daughters to live with the trader for the purpose of making light sknined baby girls. Fair skinned women were regarded as highly beautiful..but not the boys. When the trader would leave for Europe, sometimes after a decade or more, the girls would go home to their Vietnamese family and any boys that were born would go back to Europe with the trader. This must be how!
Were the names of these traders ever documented? Any info regarding traders would be appreciated. How they got from a small town in Poland to Vietnam in the early 1800's is really a mystery.
Please e mail me at ericwarren@... if you need privacy.

Max Koenig and Anna Horowitz #austria-czech #usa

sacredsisters1977@...

Hi All
I am pretty positive that I now know the death dates of both Anna Horowitz and Max Koenig. They both died in the Bronx, New York and are buried in Riverside cemetery in New Jersey. I was able to get a photo of only Max Koenig tombstone because it was still upright and in good shape. So I posted it in one of the groups on Facebook to get a translation which gave me some more information. So Max or Michael Ephraim Koenig was son of Josef. I was also under the assumption that Anna maiden name was Morgenstern, but finding the burial information on ancestry has disproved that, and shows it as Horowitz. That makes more sense since on the 1910 cenus there is a Samuel Horowitz living with them which I believe was Anna's brother. Then I said to myself where does Morgenstern come into play. I had that name from the death record I believe of Max's son Nathan. So I went on Jewish gen and started looking. In their Jewish Austria Vienna births I came across a few that listed the parent's as Josef and Johanna Morgenstern. So, I believe these to be Max's parents but can't completely confirm without finding a birth record for him. Max Michael Ephraim Koenig was born about 1866. Max was married twice, not sure who number one was but have not found any marriage listing for second wife Anna. I have not been able to find the birth listings of his two sons either, Nathan and Samuel who were both born in Austria. Nathan about 1889 and 1891 for Samuel. Max Koenig did not immigrate to America until 1902-1903. The other odd things is that I can't find the family on either the 1905,1915,or 1925 New York state Census. I am unable to find them on any 1930 census for New York, but find them on the 1940 living in the Bronx. So anyone who can help me with advice or if you have a connection and can shed more light on this.

certified documentation from AGAD #poland #galicia #general

Liliana Weintraub

I need certified copies of birth and marriage certificates which I could locate in AGAD databases. Does anybody know how to request them? I could find instructions in their website, in Polish, which makes it difficult for me to translate (though I´ve tried using a translation tool). I need them to apply for citizenship, so I need to know if those documents (certified) are actually sent by AGAD. Any comment on experience with dealing with these steps is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Since each program is different, you must read the help file and or manual FOR YOUR OWN GENEALOGY PROGRAM.  I suggest you print the directions from the help file before you start.

Generally under the file menu you will see a copy/export option.  This is the option you need to create a gedcom file.  If you have choices for the gedcom file select PAF, UTF-8, Version 5.x.  Be sure you select gedcom.ged as the file type.  The file will usually be created in the same directory as your family tree file.  Note the name before you save.

Follow these steps:

1.            Go to http://www.jewishgen.org

2.            Select Family Tree of the Jewish People.

3.            Scroll to the bottom of the page Enter your JGID researcher code and password.

4.            Select "I accept and wish to UPLOAD my GEDCOM."

5.            Read the screen and make the appropriate selections.

6.            Select UPLOAD my gedcom.

7.            Click the browse button and find the directory and file you created.  When you see the    filename in the field, click the UPLOAD button.  Wait for the message that says your    transmission was successful.  If you have a problem sending this way, see option 8.

8.            Select "Alternatively click here to send your file by email". Attach your file to the                email form that appears on your task bar.

Your account parallels the experience of Ruta Vanagaite and Efraim Zuroff as they travelled together around Lithuania, searching for the sites of mass killings of Jews. They encountered a lot of denial but also a few rare moments of candor. In general, the Lithuania's population tries to deny the atrocities and wants to wipe off that page of their history clean.  Voices of conscience are suppressed and threatened. Ruta Vanagaite, a very popular personality in Lithuania, had to leave the country following the publication of her book. Yet, it sold some 19,000 copies before being pulled off the shelves. I believe that in a similar situation, the history would repeat itself.

Dear Genners,

After receiving very helpful clues from several Genners( I thanked them directly) and reviewing my DB I established that Liba/Libby KONIGSBUCH is actually Liebe Reisel KONIGSBUCH
born Brzesko in 1914 to Dobe FEILGUT and Aron KOENIGSBUCH. She is actually my late mother's second cousin. So I have another branch in the USA.
Liba has a son called Arnold Gottfried (b. 1947) in New York who lives probably in the Bronx. Alas, his phone # and email address as they appear on MyHeritage and other websites are defunct.
Please help me to contact Arnold, my newly discovered 3rd cousin. Please answer privately.

Jewish Artifacts Stolen During Holocaust Taken From Auction House and in US Custody #announcements #holocaust #usa

Jan Meisels Allen

A trove of Jewish artifacts stolen from Jews in Europe are now in the hands of U.S. authorities who plan to return them to their communities of origin.  They were to go on auction Kestenbaum & Company which is cooperating with the authorities.  The sale involved a private collector known for trying “to rescue and preserve Jewish historical documents that would otherwise have been lost”.

The auction house said, “when provenance claims were raised, the World Jewish Restitution Organization was consulted, “after which we withdrew the property from the proposed auction".

Included in the trove are 17 funeral scrolls, manuscripts and other historic records traced to Jewish communities in Romania, Hungary, Ukraine and Slovakia.

When the auction was scheduled, a genealogy researcher, told  Robert Schwartz, president of the Jewish Community of Cluj, about them. Then the Community of Cluj and the World Jewish Restitution Organization asked that the sale be halted. Schwartz cited the historic value of a forgotten relic from the city of Cluj-Napoca in Romania — a bound registry of burials between 1836 and 1899. It had an estimated value of up to $7,000 and was described as a “manuscript written in Hebrew and Yiddish … with elaborate, artistic title-page poetically extolling the three leaders of the Burial Society,” court papers said.

Law enforcement officials learned of that planned sale in February and contacted the auction house and the consignor. While Kestenbaum & Company cooperated with an investigation into the artifacts, Buckley, a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security wrote in her affidavit, the auction house had sold one or more items before being contacted by law enforcement. She said Kestenbaum & Company had offered 21 manuscripts, scrolls and other items for sale.  Buckley also wrote in the affidavit, dated July 20, that 17 of the 21 items were believed to be in the possession of an unnamed person on the Upper East Side of Manhattan who had consigned them for sale.

Acting U.S. Attorney Jacquelin Kasulis said they “contain priceless historical information that belongs to the descendants of families that lived and flourished in Jewish communities before the Holocaust.”

Re: Why St. Louis? #usa

Unfortunately when I first heard the term Industrial Removal Office I thought of the agency of the fictitious Lindburg administration in Philip Roth's novel The Plot Against America which encouraged (forced?) Jewish families from the urban northeast to move to rural parts of America. The intent of that program was clearly antisemitic.

Re: Why St. Louis? #usa

Lee Jaffe

As it happens, a friend just sent me an article, "Bureaucracy, Agents, and Swindlers: The Hardships of Jewish Emigration from the Pale of Settlement in the Early 20th Century" by Gur Alroey (Studies in Contemporary Jewry : Volume XIX (2004), which focuses on the work of the Jewish Colonization Association (ICA) founded by Baron Maurice de Hirsch to assist Jews trying to leave the Pale of Settlement.   One of the tools of the ICA was a series of informational booklets designed to aid emigres negotiating the journey out of Eastern Europe and then finding their way in their new countries.  With this thread on my mind, the following passage jumped out at me (emphasis is mine).

The most comprehensive of these booklets was that dealing with the United States, which was updated annually in a 6,000-copy edition. It presented information on various cities (with an emphasis on employment opportunities). The ICA’s policy was to discourage immigrants from concentrating in large cities and to persuade them instead to settle further inland.

The ICA hasn't been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, so I hope hearing about their role in Jewish migration at the turn of the 20th c. will be useful and of interest.

I know that Baron de Hirsch sponsored a number of projects to help settle Jews departing the Pale. At least one of his projects, the New Jersey agricultural "colonies," were aimed toward getting Jews already established in the United States to leave slums in the big eastern cities and resettle in farm communities.  My great-grandfather Henry Jaffe initially settled in Memphis TN after leaving Poland in the late 1880s but moved the family to Philadelphia for a few years in the late 1890s before moving to Rosenhayn, one of a cluster of de Hirsch's New Jersey colonies.  https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/NJ_Farms/Rosenhayn.html   I don't know what brought my ggf to Memphis in the first place, why he decided to move to Philadelphia or how he came to own a farm in New Jersey.  I did hear from my grandfather about the family's brief experience at farming.  After shipping their entire year's yield of beans to the nearby Birdseye plant, they received a check for 3 and a half cents in return.  That convinced them that farming was not for them and they returned to Phila. and entered the shmata business.

In another version, he author Calvin Trillin who was born in Kansas City, MO wrote that his family settled there because the established and assimilated German Jews of New York were embarrassed by the arrival of masses of Eastern European Jews.  They arranged (how?) for subsequent ships to dock at ports other than New York – including Galveston, where Trillin's ancestors disembarked – encouraging them to settle in other parts of the country.  I don't know whether this scheme to divert steamships has been documented but it is true that Jews arrived at other ports and points of entry where they did find opportunities and supportive communities nearer by.

One further narrative of Jewish settlement elsewhere than NYC comes from The Jew Store by Stella Suberman, who described a pattern of established businesses branching out by sending a relative to start a new outpost down the road.  In many cases, they were pioneers, the first Jews in their new towns, but they became magnets for other Jews who followed and built up vibrant viable communities.   An extensive network of Jewish communities, growing around these branch businesses, was planted across the rural southern US in this way.

I'm not a photo expert, but here's my two cents -

Her hair is bobbed, so definitely at least the 1920s. The headband she is wearing was popular in the 1920s as well. Here's a photo of a similar one:

It looks like the style of top she is wearing is what was called a 'middy blouse', probably named after 'midshipman'. Apparently it was in fashion by at least the early 1920s.

But for a real expert opinion, I'd contact Ava 'Sherlock' Cohn  [http://sherlockcohn.com/]
