JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Hey Daniel, What match accuracy would be the threshold for a realistic match? I’m seeing a match score of .60-.70 for non-matches. When I worked at a face-matching startup, the threshold we relied on was mid-upper .90. Can your ML engine can be harnessed to also enhance text OCR? Do you have plans to add training buttons to the UI? Would it be possible to surface names and locations from USHMM?

Steerage Experience
#general
Marc Hodies
Apart from the movies and some singular experiences, for the majority of immigrants from 1906 to 1924, I wondered what it was like to be in steerage for up to 3 weeks.
Specifically, 1. How often could they come up to the deck to get fresh air? How long could they stay on the deck? 2. Did they sleep in hammocks or beds? How crowded was it? 3. Steerage temperatures for both summer or winter? 4. How did they eat? Was food supplied? Supplied on the top deck or in steerage? 3 meals a day? 5. Did most get sea sickness and eventually recover a few days to a week later while still at sea? 6. Bathroom facilities? Did they change clothes over the course of the voyage? 7. Was the baggage always near them? Thanks! Mark Hodies

Re: Papa/Pupa

I have been connecting the Papa families as many of them are related to each other. These are mostly the Neolog rather than the Orthodox families. Once my file gets updated on the Jewishgen family tree, the names I have completed will be publicly available. I’m also hoping to update the Papa ghetto list, as some what was transcribed by Yad Vashem is inaccurate and incomplete. For example, they never made use of addresses which helps to identify family groupings. Any offers of help to enter names into a spreadsheet would be much appreciated.

Re: a question on Jewish Cemetery of Worms

David Shapiro
Rabbi Moshe Sofer-Schreiber of Pressburg in his responsa to Yoreh Deah no. 342 discusses this question concerning the cemetery in Eibschutz which also had this custom. He explains there custom is to bury in the way one travels from Europe to Israel, which could either first south and then east or first east and then south, so either way is acceptable. For other prayers which should be facing Israel he says to face to the southeast.

As far as I remember the graves facing south are those of high rabbis. And the reason is that the other graves - eastward - face the cathedral of Worms.

a question on Jewish Cemetery of Worms
#germany
Metin Delevi
Dear all,
Recently I heard that the tombstones at the Jewish Cemetery of Worms - Germany ( part of Schum) are facing southward and not to the east as is the tradition.
The only answer I found was that the first Jews buried in this cemetery had İtalian names ( could it be Kolonymus?) so its tomb faced south i.e. Italy. And the others continued this tradition.
Is there any other known reason? If so, how the Hachamim of the time let this happen?
Thanks in advance for the clarification.
Best regards
Metin Delevi

Marion Werle
The Latvia & Estonia Research Division is happy to announce that our new website is now live at https://latvia.jewishgen.org. The website has been completely redesigned to ensure that researchers have access to the latest information on Latvian archival and other resources. About 80-85% of the website content is new. There is guidance for beginners as well as advanced researchers. Our Research section also provides detailed how-to instructions on navigating the Raduraksti (Latvian State Historical Archives) and FamilySearch websites to find Latvian records. The Holocaust section gives suggestions on how to find ancestors on the Latvian Names project. Our Regions and Towns section will let you know if your town is included in JOWBR, has a yizkor book, and/or has a Kehilalinks page.
This is just a high-level synopsis of the new website. We expect to add Estonian content soon. Please take some time to explore the website and let us know what you think at LatviaRD@....
Don't forget to join us at ourIAJGS conference meeting on Thursday, August 5, at 1:45 PM EDT (10:45 PDT), where we will give you further details.

I am seeking information on sources for one-line records for Isaac Gottlieb and his wife, Minnie Feldt. The records available on JewishGen, JRI-Poland and other sources do not align with family remembrances. Isaac Gottlieb immigrated to New York City around 1888. He is not the same individual as an Isaac Abraham Gottlieb. His father's name is remembered as Morris, most likely Moses (Moishe). He immigrated from the Galicia region of then Austria-Hungary. Minnie is probably not her given Yiddish name and the last name may have be Feld. She was born in 1871 and immigrated in 1887 or 1888 from the same region, but not the same town as Isaac. The towns or regions remembered were Drohobych and Peremyshliany (both now in Ukraine). I have not found arrival records or manifest for either. She is remembered as being from a relatively wealthy family. Among their children were three born in the late1880's: Harry, Benjamin and Sadie. I have no information on siblings for either Isaac or Minnie.

Re: Godparents?

Nikki Nafziger
I apologize that it took me this long to figure out how to reply. My query is to Stephan Owen Parnes in particular, My great grandpa Hersch Leib Parnes was born in 1856. My Dad's Mom, Netti Parnes (Hersch Leib's first born) was born in 1880. The birth record I found said he was son of Uscher Stahl and Freude with Godparents Moses and Elkie Parnes. I'm trying to find out his parents and grandparents names. The names Uscher Stahl and Freude are very confusing to me. The marriage you show in 1879 can't apply to his parents. I would love to be able to look up the original birth record, as you suggest. My problem is I'm such a technological dinosaur that I don't know what to put in the search engine, etc. Can you please tell me what specific steps to take? Do I put family search in the search engine....then Grodek Jewish family records? Please advise. Thank you. I'm hitting brick walls on going further back on any of my great grandparents. I can't even find what I found 15 years ago (when I last devoted time and energy into tracing my family tree farther back). I'm first generation born in the United States. Both my parents were born in Oldenburg Germany, my Dad in 1915 and Harburg, Germany, my Mom in 1918. Both German Jews (all Jews. my 4 grandparents, greatgrandparents and the only greatgreat grandparents I've been able to find; researching 15 years ago). Thank you so much, in advance, for helping me. I really appreciate it. I have grandchildren I want to give copies of the family tree to. My name at birth (for genealogical purposes):

Re: For researchers on Bohemian Jewry: looking for family name "Reichler" in Křešín
#austria-czech
m.rind@...
Thanks to those who have replied to me off-site (I did not make the request for private replies; perhaps the moderator did this out of concern for the privacy of descendants). I just want to add here, for the unlikely event that someone should find this page in a search, that I have learned that the term "královický" refers to Dolní Kralovice, a village in the Benešov District about 20 km from Křešín. There is no královický district, but Dolní Kralovice was the site of an office of the Benešov District (Bezirksamt) at the time that the documents that I was looking at were written. Also, I have found some birth records for Křešín in the records of Dolní Kralovice.
Also, now that I have read the instructions more carefully, I know enough to write the name "REICHLER" instead of "Reichler" when posting here. -- Miles Rind Cambridge, Mass.
