I am guessing that the 'died in Aug 1985' is for her SPOUSE and when she started collecting on his account.  The April 1992 date is most likely her actual death date.

This happened with my cousins grandmother.  Her spouse died in 1965, and she started collecting on his account.  Yet, I was finding the 1965 death date for her WHILE SHE WAS STILL ALIVE.

I would also try to get the death certificate, though sometimes you have to give the state or local authorities the date of death, which in this case could be one or the other. Also, if you are not a direct descendent of this woman, there may be difficulties getting the certificate, but it is worth trying.

I would think that the California index is the correct one, since it actually has a set date, as opposed to only the month for the Social Sec. entry.  The CA death index would have been based on her death certificate sent into the state vital records office. The Social Security record would have been based on when this US federal agency was informed of her death. When my father passed away in 2009, it was the funeral director who notified Social Security. But he also warned us that sometimes the clerks there don't properly record a death, and that if we kept getting my father's monthly payment checks, then we needed to notify the agency again.

There's also trying to find her gravestone, but I imagine you have already done that.

I also recommend Karesz Vandor.
But I am curious about what you are referring to when you say "the infamous death march of Hungarian Jews in WWII." There were many death marches that included Hungarian Jews (eg. in the fall of 1944, well after the countryside had been emptied of Jews, large numbers of the remaining Jews of Budapest were marched to Austria (to Mauthausen) and various other camps from there; or when Auschwitz was being emptied before the arrival of the Soviet army, etc. (not to mention other death marches between concentration and death camps in Germany in the last few months of the war...)

AJ -

You wrote, "The SSDI records his death in Moroni, Comoros in November 1971."  The SSDI does not list the place of death.

Looking at the SSDI on Ancestry.com, I see that his last residence is given as Moroni, Comoros. However, looking at the SSDI on familysearch.org, it gives his residence place as Europe.

Of course, this all only adds to the confusion over where he died.

Looking to trace family in Meppel #records

Lynn Weisberg

Someone put on Ancestry.com that SALOMON MORGENSTERN was born in 1805 in Meppel, Drenthe, Netherlands and his son ISRAEL ( Yisrael Tzvi ) was born there in 1826. There are no records online documenting that they lived there before immigrating to Ukraine and then Austria. I need proof please or possibly a Dutch researcher.

How sure are you of the origin of the info? Could one of these come from a ‘tree’?
can you find an obituary for her? It might help pin the correct date for you.

Seeking Information about an Italian Rabbi Mordechai Tusk or Tosk #slovakia

Dave Baron

Are you familiar with an Italian born Rabbi who ended up becoming the Rav of Pressburg, today Bratislava, Slovakia. His name is Rabbi Mordechai Tusk or Tosk?

Any information or resources is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Enclosed are two sources about this Rabbi with conflicting information, mainly dates.  One is a family document referencing him in our lineage tree and the second is an auction document showing different dates.

It’s unclear which of these periods is true?

Rabbi Tusk was possibly born circa 1723 and died 1816 (at age ‎~93‏) or in another source he was supposedly born in 1744 and passed away in 1837, where the Chatam Sofer eulogized him.

Input greatly appreciated, thank you!

EdrieAnne Broughton

The only obit I found mentioning Leopold Horschander was one for his sister, Sali Friedlander in 1965.  Sali died in Appleton, Wisconsin and mentioned that her brother, Leopold lived in Austria.  Often listings for obits are surviving relatives.  A simple search for Leopold places him back and forth between the US and Europe in naturalization records.

family trees - who copied my information #general

jeremy frankel

Dear Genners,

Elise Cundiff included in her post with respect to Ancestry.com that "you can have your tree be private entirely - but people will be able to see that you have one, just not be able to see what you have on it.”

This is not entirely true. To my knowledge, in Ancestry there are three “levels” of privacy. The first level is to have the tree totally public. The second level is, as Elise mentioned, checked (ticked) as private; others can see there is a tree but cannot see it, but can communicate with the tree-owner. A third level is to check/tick another box so that the tree won’t even be found in a search by others. It will never show up. There might be a number of reasons why a researcher would want this level of privacy.

Re: KT teenagers placed North in Thirlby England 1939-40 #unitedkingdom

Barrie Callender

Thirlby Grange is a farm just outside a small village called Thirlby in North Yorkshire. It is near Thirsk, which has a Racecourse I use to go to with my Dad. Thirsk is the setting for a series of books about a vet too.  It was made into a TV drama.

Put the following coordinates in Google maps and you'll get to Thirlby Grange.
54.2504062, -1.2590668

I searched for the place and it came up with this little web site which mentions Thirlby Grange. It might be worth contacting the authors for more info.

It is in a lovely part of England IMHO.

Good luck
