You can contact Avotaynu - Institute for Jewish Research & Genealogy, they have close contacts within the burial committee in Vienna, and can easily lookup the burial registry books (not publicly available) for you. Additionally they can readily supply you with photos of graves (for a fee).

Their email is info@....

Maryellen Tobiasiewicz said a subscription to the Washington Post is required to access the article I posted. As Maryellen is located in Europe there may be a different requirement for access for US newspapers.

In the U.S. one is entitled to three free reads on Washington Post so if one is  being requested to purchase a subscription, then they  must have used the free articles for the month, I do not have a subscription to the Washington Post and was able to access it with no subscription.

Szechynie 1852 cadastral map now on Gesher Galicia's Map Room #galicia #poland #ukraine

Jay Osborn

Just posted on the Gesher Galicia Map Room: A full-color 1852 cadastral map of the small Galician town of Szechynie (now Shehyni, a Ukrainian border checkpoint for crossing to and from Poland):

https://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/szechynie-shehyni-1852/

Three weeks ago we posted a historical map of Medyka to the Gesher Galicia Map Room. Before the collapse of the Habsburg Empire, these small Galician towns were adjacent to each other on the important road (and later rail line) between Lemberg (Lwów, Lviv) and Przemyśl. Today the towns face each other across a post-WWII national border and serve as crossing points, Medyka in Poland and Shehyni in Ukraine (the former Szechynie is now known as Szeginie in Polish).

This historical map is complete and in excellent condition. Although noticeably small, really only a village, by 1852 Szechynie already had buildings and staff to serve the imperial administration, including a significant postal center, a riding school, and other structures, as well as what appear to be three roadhouses. Today's Shehyni (still quite small) is similar, with customs and migration controls, transit stations and truck parking, a concentration of small hotels and cafes – but the riding school is now a farm.

This stitched digital composite map was assembled and presented in interactive format by Gesher Galicia. Images for this historical map were provided to Gesher Galicia by the Archiwum Państwowe w Przemyślu. To see many more cadastral maps of Galician cities, towns, and villages in full detail, visit the Gesher Galicia Map Room:

Looking for a page in Yugoslavia yizkor book #austria-czech #hungary #romania #yizkorbooks

Adam Turner

Anyone out there have a copy of Pinkas ha-kehilot: Encyclopaedia of Jewish Communities: Yugoslavia? I am researching a person who (according to Judy Petersen's name index) is apparently mentioned on page 126 of this book, Emanuel Sparger.

My research has suggested that Emanuel Sparger was most likely a cantor who lived at various times in Linz, Austria, Budapest, and Oradea, Romania (aka Nagyvárad). His son Oskar (who perished, along with his wife, in the Jasanovec concentration camp) was an engineer in the Zagreb area, so it would make sense if his father Emanuel also ended up in Zagreb. My local Holocaust library has a copy of the book, but it's closed during the pandemic, so I'd be interested in seeing this one page if anyone has a copy!

Re: Post cards from pre-WWI Russia #russia #general

I have post cards from Poland around 1900 with pictures of either family and friends on front. It was cheaper then (as it is now) to send a post card than it was to send a letter. So they  sent the photo a a post card. In my case, the people are too far away to make out details on their faces. I assume my grandparents knew who they were.

Where is Lakma, Hungary? #hungary

Dan Rottenberg

I'm trying to track the movements of my Hungarian maternal ancestors, mostly named Klein, Spielberger, and Burger. They appear to have lived in villages around Kosice (then Kassa) in the early 19th Century before migrating southward over several decades to Miskolc and from there to America in the 1870s. On an 1882 birth certificate in New York, my great-grandparents Herman and Julia Klein listed their birthplaces, respectively, as "Michallitz" and "Lakma, Ungaren" (that is, Hungary). I presume Michallitz is a misspelling of Miskolc. But where is Lakma? I've never found any town by that name in any database— not in JewishGen, Google, or even Jordan Auslander's comprehensive Genealogical Gazetteer of the Kingdom of Hungary. I presume Lakma is a misspelling of some other town name, presumably near Miskolc. But what town might it be? I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.
