Jewish Families in Tanta, Egypt #sephardic #names

Abuwasta Abuwasta

I am busy now with constructing an index of Jewish families which lived in Tanta during the 20th century.
A partial list was posted on FILES of the Hebrew Facebook Group of Egyptian Jews https://www.facebook.com/groups/1528403684101271/files
Please look at the TANTA spreadsheet and if a family you know is not there do let me know. I recommend doing it from a computer screen and not from your smart phone. I find this method of "crowd sourcing" very effective. Thanks

Re: Why were so many children labeled "illegitimate" in Birth Registration (Metrical) Books of Subcarpathia - late 1800s #hungary

Shimy Karni

Hello,
I also saw this in my family history. At the beginning I was very surprised as  I saw that my grandfather and all his brothers and sisters were called "illegitimate". Also it makes the children's surname to be the name of the mother.
Someone explained to me that it happens if the parents' wedding is not registered in the local office then they become illegitimate.
Just a technical issue. My cousin asked me if he is also illegitimate (in a hummer)?
I told him that in the Jewish law you don't have to be registered in the Polish books to become married, there are other 3 ways...
So, to summarize it was because the Jews had a Jewish wedding and were not registered in the local office.

Best Regards,
Shimi Karni, Israel

There seem to be numerous births that were considered "illegitimate" by the authorities - nearly 20% of all births - in Munkacs between 1886 -1890.
Was this because of a bureaucratic dereliction on the part of parents who, for whatever reason, had not recorded their union in the official Marriage Registrations - as was often true in Galicia where the rabbis were said to advise couples not to register their marriages?  [In which case the term "illegitimate" is an unnecessary slur upon the issue of what might have been perfectly kosher unions.]  Or was Munkacs of the late 1800s indeed a pocket of improprieties?  That characterization however contradicts both scholarly accounts and oral histories of this former Jewish community that is usually described as traditional and conservative in its values and practices?  Does anybody know?

Thank you to all those who have contacted me with offers or suggestions as to getting a photo of the grave.
I requested it on FindAGrave. Within 24 hours, a user contacted me, saying that they went to the cemetery, but there was no legible grave with that name in that row. (Perhaps it was knocked down or is not legible anymore.)
I won’t be needing help anymore with this, but thanks anyway!

Hello,
Wilhelm/Wolf STEINFELD fro Tisza Fuered died March 23, 1911 in Vienna aged about 70 years. Vienna Jewish death record say that he was buried March 26 at Vienna Central Cemetery,
For Vienna Jewish burials are at least two holdings available: an alphabetical and and a chronological list - I attached both.
The alpha list has him in line 4: date of death March 23, date of burial March 26, place of burial (Jewish section of the Vienna Central Cemetery) group 19 row 47 (grave) number not given, what is very uncommon, but: Ther is a column caled "Ueberführung"  - transportation with paying.
The chronological list don't has him; there are several burials that day, five in ths row.
My assumption is: he was transfered to the Jewish cemetery of Nagymarton/Mattersdorf, were his eldest son David was buried in 1870 and his wife Rosalie in 1915.

There is a book written about it. "Angel of Orphans", published by Targum. I don't know if it is still obtainable.
See an article about it at https://www.aish.com/ho/p/65148467.html

You can contact Avotaynu - Institute for Jewish Research & Genealogy, they have close contacts within the burial committee in Vienna, and can easily lookup the burial registry books (not publicly available) for you. Additionally they can readily supply you with photos of graves (for a fee).

Their email is info@....

Maryellen Tobiasiewicz said a subscription to the Washington Post is required to access the article I posted. As Maryellen is located in Europe there may be a different requirement for access for US newspapers.

In the U.S. one is entitled to three free reads on Washington Post so if one is  being requested to purchase a subscription, then they  must have used the free articles for the month, I do not have a subscription to the Washington Post and was able to access it with no subscription.

Szechynie 1852 cadastral map now on Gesher Galicia's Map Room #galicia #poland #ukraine

Jay Osborn

Just posted on the Gesher Galicia Map Room: A full-color 1852 cadastral map of the small Galician town of Szechynie (now Shehyni, a Ukrainian border checkpoint for crossing to and from Poland):

https://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/szechynie-shehyni-1852/

Three weeks ago we posted a historical map of Medyka to the Gesher Galicia Map Room. Before the collapse of the Habsburg Empire, these small Galician towns were adjacent to each other on the important road (and later rail line) between Lemberg (Lwów, Lviv) and Przemyśl. Today the towns face each other across a post-WWII national border and serve as crossing points, Medyka in Poland and Shehyni in Ukraine (the former Szechynie is now known as Szeginie in Polish).

This historical map is complete and in excellent condition. Although noticeably small, really only a village, by 1852 Szechynie already had buildings and staff to serve the imperial administration, including a significant postal center, a riding school, and other structures, as well as what appear to be three roadhouses. Today's Shehyni (still quite small) is similar, with customs and migration controls, transit stations and truck parking, a concentration of small hotels and cafes – but the riding school is now a farm.

This stitched digital composite map was assembled and presented in interactive format by Gesher Galicia. Images for this historical map were provided to Gesher Galicia by the Archiwum Państwowe w Przemyślu. To see many more cadastral maps of Galician cities, towns, and villages in full detail, visit the Gesher Galicia Map Room:

Looking for a page in Yugoslavia yizkor book #austria-czech #hungary #romania #yizkorbooks

Adam Turner

Anyone out there have a copy of Pinkas ha-kehilot: Encyclopaedia of Jewish Communities: Yugoslavia? I am researching a person who (according to Judy Petersen's name index) is apparently mentioned on page 126 of this book, Emanuel Sparger.

My research has suggested that Emanuel Sparger was most likely a cantor who lived at various times in Linz, Austria, Budapest, and Oradea, Romania (aka Nagyvárad). His son Oskar (who perished, along with his wife, in the Jasanovec concentration camp) was an engineer in the Zagreb area, so it would make sense if his father Emanuel also ended up in Zagreb. My local Holocaust library has a copy of the book, but it's closed during the pandemic, so I'd be interested in seeing this one page if anyone has a copy!
