I have identified my g/grandfather Simon Reische, who on more than one
occasion appears as 'Simon Lishe' in census or death certificates.
Consequently, I'm searching both Lishe and Reische. I've also identified
Simon's father Abraham Max or Mordechai, with no surname, and his mother
as Sarah Knee or Knie.

Family Search has linked them with the 1892 marriage of a woman named
Chaye Rechel Lev Lishe, to a man named Mayer Gurfein. The image appears

Chaye came from Rzeszow Voivodeship, which is the general area of
origination for my family. Her father is identified as Abraham Marios
Lishe, the Marios possibly being a mistranscription. A quick Ancestry
and Family Search check doesn't reveal anything further on her, and the
name is completely unknown to me.

I have two questions in logical order:

1. How does the Family Search algorithm operate? Does it suggest linkage
as a possibility or a likelihood?   If its only a possibility and not a
likelihood, I can treat this as a coincidence, since the name 'Lishe'
appears not infrequently in Dembica and surrounding areas.

2. If its based on likelihood, then do other members recognize her? Can
someone suggest an Anglicization of her given names?

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide. I'm guessing its a
coincidence but don't know enough about how Family Search operates to
feel comfortable in concluding it.

Hi,
I am searching for records of my GGG Grandparents, MORRIS(MOSES) and MATILDA LYONS. The records I already have show they were both Jewish and both born in Hamburg about 1815 (+/- 5 years). They migrated to Glasgow sometime before 1839 when their first child's birth is registered there. I have found records of their lives from that point onwards but have had no success in looking for information relating to their origins in Hamburg and their families before that. I contacted the Hamburg Jewish Genealogical Society to search Hamburg births but they found nothing.

Relevant information I have:
Morris (Moses) Lyons b. circa 1815 in Hamburg. His Hebrew name is recorded as 'Moshe ben Yechiel' which I believe means his father was called Yechiel. I have searched for a Yechiel Lyons in all online records but without success. Morris was an artificial flower maker. 
Matilda Lyons b. circa 1815 in Hamburg. I do not know her family name before marriage. Her short obituary published in the Jewish Chronicle has the phrase' American and Australian papers please copy'. It is, therefore, possible that either Matilda or Morris had family members in both countries.

There are several examples of the Lyons name in the area of what is now northern Poland and my rather feeble theory at present is that Yechiel moved form Prussia to Hamburg at some point before 1815.

Would the name Yechiel have been morphed into something else? Might the name Lyons have been Anglicised? 

Does anyone have any matches or likely parallels to these individuals?

In April 2020, The Canadian Jewish News shut down. It started up again last year with a “trickle of content”.  It had previously shut down in 2013, but due to community support restarted operations within a year. Now the publication is undergoing a full-scale revamp with the same editor-in-chief.  It is prioritizing digital content, including email newsletters and a suite of podcasts, and dramatically scaling back its print edition from weekly to four times a year.

 

A new digital membership program will replace print subscribers.

 

Articles on the website will skew to a younger audience, with the goal of establishing intergenerational dialogue among the country’s 400,000 Jews.

 

Previously the staff was 40 in 2013, 16 at time of closure in 2020 and now it has seven full-time staffers including several in a newly created podcast department.

Query-Looking for Immigration Docs Greenman #belarus

So here is a bit of a puzzle. I-nor several relatives who have been researching this longer than me-cannot find the immigration entry manifests for : Anna Greenman (my great great grandmother) or her daughters Mary, Celia, Harry..Edward. They all came together from Minsk around 1890 to New York. 
 
Anna's husband Sandor Greenman arrived to NY 7-12-1888. 
 
Ive searched several key sites including ancestry. No luck still..any ideas?

Greetings,

I'm helping a family friend trying to trace her grandfather, whose name (in the US) was Reuben Greenwald (b. ca. 1886, d. 1943, in Philadelphia, PA). The family story is that he "purchased" a surname to avoid the authorities and emigrate to the US. He arrived in 1889 or 1890, depending on the census record consulted. The original family name was said to be Peresmyk. I've found a record in the Belarus Revision Lists; something called NHAB Grodno. I can send an image of the page to whomever is interested.

The goal is to trace the family back to the home village, or at least the region, if possible. Reuben Greenwald was the son of David Peresmyk.

I'd be interested if anyone has come across the name, let alone have leads on how to continue the search. Many thanks.

"OLD CEMETERY: The oldest of the two cemeteries, 0.4-hectares, was destroyed with the site now occupied by the exhibition hall on ul. Sienkiewicza. WWII Vandalism and post-war development removed all traces. [July 2009]

NEW CEMETERY: Established at the beginning of the 20th century near the current Kaufland market, only four gravestones and one ohel survived in the 0.8-hectare site. In the 1960s, the ohel was rebuilt to protect graves of tzaddikim Elizer Horowic, Meir of Dzików, Jozue of Dzków, and Jechiel ben Meir (1850-1928) from Pokrzywnica and Tarnów. The Embassy of Israel and the Jewish Historical Institute honored the caretaker, Mr Mieczysław Zdyrski. The clean site has a fence. [July 2009]"
