JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Hello David
It is highly likely that Lyons is an anglicized name. Are there any marriage/death records for the children or even the wife that may show the mother's maiden name? Regards, Shosh Eizenshtein KESSLER, BALBIRER, CHARAS, Lesko, Galicia; MITNIK, REKUN, KANTERMAN, Zashkov, Bogopol, Pervomaysk, Ukraine

GenoPro is not a native Mac program. It is designed for Windows.
https://genopro.com/faq/is-there-a-macintosh-version-of-genopro.aspx If you're not familiar with running a Windows emulator on your Mac, this probably isn't for you. I did a web search for "editable family tree forms" (without the quotes) and there are some basic tree, person and family forms available. I've used a spreadsheet in the past, I can add columns and rows as I get more information. I do love spreadsheets for their sorting capabilities. Laurie Sosna San Francisco,CA

Joel Weintraub will prepare us for its debut by covering such topics as what is a census, who uses the census, census caveats, how the 1950 census was taken, training of enumerators, census sampling, census questions, and a summary of the results. He will conclude with a discussion of his and Steve Morse’s 1950 census location tools, online right now at the stevemorse.org website and, time permitting, will demonstrate searches on the One-Step Unified Tool. Joel Weintraub, a New Yorker by birth, is an emeritus Biology Professor at California State University, Fullerton. He became interested in genealogy over 20 years ago and volunteered for nine years at the National Archives in southern California. Joel helped produce location tools for the 1900 through 1950 federal censuses and the NY State censuses for NYC (1905, 1915, 1925) for the Steve Morse “One-Step” website. He has published articles on the U.S. census and the 72-year rule, as well as on the difficulties of searching Ellis Island passenger records and NYC census records. He has a YouTube channel that has his genealogy (and biology) talks at “JDW Talks.” All are welcome; attendance is free, but registration is required: Click here to register at our website Submitted by: Phyllis Rosner jgsny.org JGSNY VP Communications New York, NY

Simon Srebrny
I have done a little research into his family because of fiddly non-blood connections to my family and to the family of a friend of mine. I forwarded your post to that friend with the request that she forward it to her Eligator relatives. Don't know if she will follow through.
You can email me if you like. If you can't see my email address, then you can find me via the Jewish Genealogy Family Finder. Eligator is a great name! Is it perhaps a shortened version of Introligator? Simon Srebrny (from London, living in Berlin)

Isabel, thanks for response. I am familiar with Intriligator. Knew someone with that name. It made me wonder if it was a regional thing. Do you know the geographic origin of Intriligator?

Alan Reische
I have identified my g/grandfather Simon Reische, who on more than one
occasion appears as 'Simon Lishe' in census or death certificates. Consequently, I'm searching both Lishe and Reische. I've also identified Simon's father Abraham Max or Mordechai, with no surname, and his mother as Sarah Knee or Knie. Family Search has linked them with the 1892 marriage of a woman named Chaye Rechel Lev Lishe, to a man named Mayer Gurfein. The image appears on Viewmate 95116 at https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/full.asp?ID=95116&loc=A&name=95116ChayeRechelLishe%2Ejpg <https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/full.asp?ID=95116&loc=A&name=95116ChayeRechelLishe%2Ejpg>. Chaye came from Rzeszow Voivodeship, which is the general area of origination for my family. Her father is identified as Abraham Marios Lishe, the Marios possibly being a mistranscription. A quick Ancestry and Family Search check doesn't reveal anything further on her, and the name is completely unknown to me. I have two questions in logical order: 1. How does the Family Search algorithm operate? Does it suggest linkage as a possibility or a likelihood? If its only a possibility and not a likelihood, I can treat this as a coincidence, since the name 'Lishe' appears not infrequently in Dembica and surrounding areas. 2. If its based on likelihood, then do other members recognize her? Can someone suggest an Anglicization of her given names? Thanks for any suggestions you can provide. I'm guessing its a coincidence but don't know enough about how Family Search operates to feel comfortable in concluding it. Alan Reische, Manchester NH a.reische@... Membership No. 28114

If you are looking for an editable graphical form of family tree, you might appreciate GenoPro. It is a simple client (resident on your Mac, not online) software, downloadable from its website. You can easily create a constantly modifiable tree according to additions and amendments, no limits to the number of people involved. You also can create a 'report', which summarizes all the data according to each person or each surname listed.

Sunday Lecture: Esther the Queen and the Brothers Buzaglo
#events
#sephardic
contact@...
Join Sephardic World this Sunday to hear Ali Erginsoy tell the amazing story
of a Sephardic adventurer, his wayward son, the wronged widow, and the scheming brother-in-law. The great historian Cecil Roth said of Joseph Buzaglo: “If in the annals of the eighteenth century there was any career more fantastic than his, it has escaped the notice of the present writer.” The lives of three of Joseph's brothers, Moroccan Jews who emigrated to London in the 1730s, were almost as eventful. And in the shadows, the figure of Joseph’s third wife, Esther Reyna Bentubo - Esther the Queen - a woman who refused to be pushed down. Ali Erginsoy is a former journalist at BBC television, including working on their flagship news program, Newsnight. He is also a filmmaker and consultant. He is a regular contributor to the discussion of Sephardic genealogy. The meeting is on Sunday 5 September 2021 at 11am in LA, 2pm NYC, 7pm London, 8pm Paris/Amsterdam, and 9pm Jerusalem. Patrons can join us on Zoom. Everyone is invited to join us for free at: https://www.youtube.com/SephardicGenealogyAndHistory Please subscribe to the YouTube channel. It helps us a lot and reminds you when we are going live! Best wishes, David Mendoza and Ton Tielen Sephardic World
