JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Hi Jaques,
You bring up some interesting information which is all new to me (and why I made my posting). I have heard/read little about the Judenrat in the Netherlands. For the most part, information I've read has been mainly In Poland, and other Eastern European countries. Thank you for sharing this. -- Leah Heilpern Snider Silverdale, Washington/ USA

I have been looking at a lot of NYC death certificates data lately. It seems like most people who died at Seaview died from TB and most people who died from TB died at Seaview. I'm sure there were other hospitals where people died of TB, but Seaview seems to be the predominant one.

Kassel Germany 1941

Richard Oppenheimer
Hello,
I am seeking some input from NS-Zeit experts about Kassel during 1941. German Jews living in various parts of Hessen were sent to Kassel starting Dec1939 as a collection point before the three deportations to Riga (12/1941), Theresienstadt (6/1942) and Majdanek (9/1942). My question is were these people ever allowed to leave Kassel to visit other major cities in Hessen, particularly in early 1941? -- Richard Oppenheimer Venice, Florida, USA researching Mannheimer - Bad Wildungen

Following my last post, I would like to explore the Weinling family who were instrumental in advancing balloon design.prior to WW1. A number of web pages state that they were Orthodox Jews, but don't provide any evidence for that. I'd be grateful for any further information..
Thanks

I am certainly no expert, but if my family history helps, here it is.
On my mother's side, a great great uncle, was part of the Judenrat in the town of Zelechow. Thanks to David Lukowiecki who has been translating the yizkor book, I have been able to obtain pictures of him, and learn about his story. He wasn't a very nice man, in fact, according to the stories recorded, he was one of the most hated men in town. It seems he was part of the judenrat and tried to get personal benefit. He did everything as he was told and thought he was better than the rest. The last story says that the SS called him for a very special mission, and asked him to dig a mass grave.... and of course it turned out It was for him; they shot him. Just as an added comment, his father, was one of the most generous and loved man in town.... -- Lia Sragovicz

Polish Archives Loan Document
#translation
#poland
Steven Granek
Folks -
I recently discovered some kind of loan document associated my my Great Aunt and Great Uncle for a property apparently in Kalisz. I was able to request it from the Polish State Archives in Lodz. They were very responsive, told me they would scan it for the price of $74 Zlotys - about $20, and send me a link good for 30 days to download (that piece of information is shared as it may be of use for others that run into documents of interest.). Once again - my compliments to them - they were responsive and as soon as they had received my wire (which was easy and relatively inexpensive to do) - they sent me the link with a password in a separate e-mail. Some of you may have seen recent discussion about this re: an address in Kalisz. So… I now have a 50 page document detailing the loan. Of course is it a scan in Polish (but it has really cool elevation drawings). My interest is only in what addttional tidbits I might discover about the family. My daughter has gamely hand typed the first two pages into Google Translate, but of course, we don’t really still know what we are looking at. 2 questions - 1). does anyone have experience with this type of document from your own research (it’s a construction loan for property in Kalisz, loan by the Bank in Lodz). 2) assuming I want the entire thing translated (a bit much for even a generous ‘viewmate-er’ I assume, does anyone know someone reliable that could translate this for me (I’d pay as appropriate). I am betting most of it is not very interesting, but the question is what parts ARE interesting and what might I discover. Thank you in advance, always. We are aware of at least two NUSZBAUM family members who changed their surname to DIOSI in the 1860s, apparently in an effort to make themselves eligible for admission to medical school. I am told that this is a pretty straight translation (nut or nut tree) from German/Yiddish to Hungarian.

TOM, b. 1910-1914

Strange question flimsy data:
In the mid 1930s my mother met a distant cousin of hers by the name of Tom, didn't know his family name, who was visiting his grandmother , Sara, ( also her married name unknown) who lived on coney island, nyc. According to my late mother's autobiography, Tom seems to have cut short his visit, to go to Boston where he was going to college. He may also have lived in the Boston area.
There is a good chance that Tom's father was not Jewish. That seems to be the reason that my grandparents and Sara arranged for Tom to cut short his visit on NYC, so that he and my religious mother, then single, would not get "involved" one with the other.
The above Sarah was my great grandfather (Mayer ABRAMOWITZ)'s sister.
Does the above story about Tom or his family sound familiar to anyone ?

21 June 1846-New Synagogue, Parish Great Helens,London. Looking for marriage record of Abraham Jacobs to Mary Simmons
#unitedkingdom
#records
BRENERDA@...
Looking for the image of marriage record of Abraham Jacobs to Mary Simmons 21 June 1846. Certificate #127. The record identified as City of London Vol 2 208B in 1846. Abraham is my "2nd great grandfather".
England's General Records Office (GRO) has a copy of the marriage certificate, but the given name of father of groom is illegible. GRO reached out to the London local register office, but they had no copy. (Did not advise me the current name of that local office.) They did not send me an image. Just the info they could read. The New Synagogue is now known as Stamford Hill synagogue, London N16. Was City of London, LondonEC3. The wonderful site SynagogueScribes.com has their marriage records for 1791-1823 and 1837-1842. Abraham Jacobs is listed as a member of their "general committee" in 1851. The only Jacobs on that list. In the 1841 England census the only Abraham Jacobs of appropriate age is listed in the household of a Woolf Jacobs in St Andrew Holborn (Above The Bars), Middlesex, England. Father and son's occupation furrier. Abraham in 1851 census, 9 Francis Court, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, married with children as a furrier. Emigrated in 1856 to NYC. He was a furrier in the 1860 NYC Brooklyn Census (indexed as Jacobus). In 1870 Providence, RI census he sells crockery. (In London directories in 1839 and 1845, he sold china and glassware.) Dies circa 1873 probably in Providence. By 1880 widow and children back in NYC. Probable father Woolf (Wolfe) Jacobs was a furrier in the 1841 census. He is listed as the father, furrier, on a sibling marriage record in 1848. Woolf Jacobs' occupation changed in 1851 and 1861 census. May have died in 1865. Just want that final confirmation. Hoping an English researcher can help me out. All suggestions appreciated.. Quite possible synagogue record no longer exists. David Brener, Ephrata, PA. brenerda@...
