JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Stefan Rohrbacher
Until 1835 the Jews of Memmelsdorf buried their dead in the old Jewish cemetery near Ebern. This is where I found the headstone for Wolf Schmay Nordheimer's first wife. The epitaph is badly worn but readable:
פ"ט
ת'נ'צ'ב'ה From the epitaph it appears that Scheinle died on April 25, 1810. Here is a photo of her headstone: Best wishes, Stefan ROHRBACHER, Duesseldorf

I would like to connect with anyone who might possibly have information on or suggestions for finding information on one of my husband's lines in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
SCHWARZSCHILD family of Rückingen Hessen Germany
Hona Herz SCHWARZSCHILD Possible death in Rückingen
was the father of:
Naftali Herz SCHWARZSCHILD Birth ca1802 Possibly Rückingen Death 26 Sep1872 Hanau Hessen Germany
m#1 Fanny SCHWAB on 26 Oct 1836 at Hanau Hessen Child: Moritz
(Fanny died 15 Jul 1845 in Frankfürt on Main at age 32)
m#2 Sara GLAUBERG on after 1845 Known children: Mathilde, Bertha, a son (Sara was widow of FÜRTH at time of marr)
Naftali and Fanny were my husband's 3great grandparents.
I found a listing in Kelly's Directory of Merchants Manufacturers and Shippers of a MH Schwab & Schwarzschild, Liebfranenberg 29.
Apparently they were wholesalers in clothing materials and their building was called 'Braunfels'. Wondering if this is the same Schwab and Schwarzschild?
At the time of his first wife Fanny's death in 1845 the record states she was 'the 32 year old wife of the Jewish merchant Herz Schwarzschild of Rückingen in Kurhessen'.
Naftali Herz is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Hanau.
I have been unable to find any information on Naftali's siblings or parents, with the exception of his father's name. I can find no early records for Rückingen except for a list of surname adoptions in 1811, where Hona Herz chose SCHWARZSCHILD.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would check Ancestry's California Passenger Lists. My son-in-law's g-g-grandparents had been living in Japan before emigrating to the U.S. in 1906. I found the record of their voyage from Yokohama to San Francisco among those lists, as well as the record of his g-g-grandfather's initial 1902 exploratory voyage, which departed from Hong Kong for San Francisco.

His 3greatgrandparents were:
Fanny SCHWAB and Naftali Herz SCHWARZSCHILD married on 26 Oct 1836 in Hanau Hessen Germany.
Their marriage record does not list either of her parents. They had one child, Moritz, born 6 Jan 1837 in Rückingen Hesse.
Fanny's death record reads: In Frankfurt am Main L G No. 81 in the Scheurgasse died Tuesday, July 15, 1845 at 11:15 PM, according to a certificate from Dr. Schwarzschild, Fanny Schwarzschild nee Schwab, 32-year-old wife of the Jewish merchant Herz Schwarzschild of Rückingen in Kurhessen

Hello Vladimir,
I am looking for the "Cheskis" family record from Korosten, Ukraine. My ggfather Ben-Zion Cheskis passed away in 1937, and his last residence was Korosten, Karla Marksa 9. Unfortunately, I do not know who his father, mother, or sibling was. Any record that can reveal this info is going to help me to go further into the past. If you can check the documents related to Ben-Zion Cheskis, that would be great.
Thanks,

Max Heffler provided a correct, but apparently unnecessary, solution. I tested his solution on a note saying “via groups.jewishgen.org” by clicking on the “From” address. I saw the = sign that would need to be replaced by @. However, when I clicked on the “Reply to Sender” link at the bottom of the same email, the original poster’s email address appeared in the “To” position without any need to change characters. Was Japanese righteous diplomat Chiune Sugihara honoured in Montreal?
#poland

rabbi_baron@...
Mr Jose Levkovich of Montreal - Jerusalem (Holocaust guide) told me 2 years ago that about 50 years ago my father Rabbi Leib Baron zt"l asked him to make a reception at his home in Montreal for Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara. He told me it was well planned and survivors came from all over, including Rabbis Hershberg from Mexico and Kreiswirth from Antwerp as well as rabbis from New York, Chicago and Detroit and other places. He related to me the speeches of several of the participants, including Chazzan Rabbi Yankel Ederman of New York who organised the event and Sugihara himself. He asked me if we had any record and I replied that I was shocked as I had never heard about it. It would have been the first public recognition of its kind anywhere for Sugihara.
Since then I have spent much energy trying to find a reference, including Rabbi Ederman's archives at the USHMM, with no luck. Mr Levkovich's Daughter Sheila insists she remembers the event. Mr Jose is clear as a bell (as is evident on his many videos about the holocaust) and this whole affair is frustrating me as Sugihara's youngest son Nobuki, who was in Israel last week for dedication ceremonies, claims his father was never in Montreal! If anyone has any further info that could shed light on this I would greatly appreciate it. Mr Sugihara first met Religious Affairs Minister Zorach Warhaftig in 1969, bringing the first publicity of his whereabouts, so this reception would have taken place between late 1969 and late 1971 (for other reasons it couldn't have been later), but would not have been in the bitter cold period of Dec 20-March 20, almost certainly May-September 1970 or May-September 1971.
It occurred to me that the only periodical where this would have been recorded would have been the Yiddish Montreal daily Keneder Adler, as Yiddish was still the language of the elite in Montreal at the time, but there is no digital copy, only microfilm in just a few libraries. Does anyone know someone who could do a search? --Rabbi Elchonon Baron Jerusalem rabbi_baron@...

Dear Group,
As a part of my roots research, I need access to a 100-years old issue of the newspaper Brünner Zeitung. Specifically, I am interested in page 5 from Brünner Zeitung , 13.02.1919, Issue 36, page 5. This page, apparently, is online (see link)... but seems to be only accessible to citizens of the Czech Republic, or students studying in the country, who are registered to the National Library of the Czech Republic or affiliated libraries such as the Moravian Library of Brno. If anyone on this group has access to this newspaper issue/page, I would appreciate sending it to me in a private message. Many thanks - Yaron Wolfsthal, Israel

The 1795 revision list as well as later ones prior to 1850 can be found at Familysearch.org. One way of finding
them is to search the catalog for "Vilnius", then look for census records, NOT Jewish records. You'll find the films rather easily from there.
