Re: When was this photo taken and where #photographs

Sherri Bobish

Marcie,

I suggest taking the photo carefully out of the frame and check the back for a photographer's name.  The person who gave you the photo may have thought you were asking if there was any personal message or names of the people in the photos on the back.  Check for yourself to be sure.  I am assuming that this is the original photo, and not a modern copy made by the person who gave you the photo.

Regards,

Sherri Bobish

Re: Approximate year this may have been taken #photographs

Marcie,

As soon as I saw the photo I thought 1920's.  Her hair is bobbed, and the shoe style is 1920's.  It appears to be a studio portrait.  You can tell by the props in the photo.

Is there a name of a photographer or a photography studio anywhere on the photo, front or back, or if you have the frame, the name should be imprinted on the frame.

If you have a photographer's name you can trace the name through old city directories on Ancestry.com.

Good luck in your search,

Sherri Bobish

If you look closely there seems to be some markings, possibly from the photographer between the 2 figures (near his leg).

I was told there is nothing on the back side. It was given to me by a relative  who framed it and she said "I would have noticed if there was something on the back side"

Hi Kathy!
I use the snipping tool. Copy the map. Paste it into a word doc. Use .5 borders on all sides. Then you can resize the map to fit.
It works well for me!

Yale,

There are pages of testimony at Yad Vashem for both Ernestyna and Samuel.  The submitter's name is Yaakov Zisman.

https://yvng.yadvashem.org/

"Shmuel Sussmann was born in Tarnobrzeg, Poland in 1880 to Jakow. He was a factory owner and married to Ernestina nee Faber. Prior to WWII he lived in Chrzanow, Poland. During the war he was in Chrzanow, Poland."

The page of testimony itself is in Hebrew, and there may be info there to help you find
Yaakov Zisman.

Good luck in your search,

Reading a Headstone from Warsaw Cemetery #poland

mrsbrite@...

Tzipa passed in 1911.
1. I want to know if it was common to write  bar (son of ) instead of bas ( daughter of) at that time and place
2. Her Father seems to be Leib and Her husband was Eliezer. Was it common to list the husband on the headstone or could it be someone else?
3. What does א''ר signify?

When was house in Brooklyn, NY built? #usa #general

Roberta Berman

I received a message that answered my question about where to find a date that a house was built in New York City.

"The best way to resolve this is to go to the official source. Here's a
link to the NYC Department of Finance's Property Tax Public Access web
portal:

https://a836-pts-access.nyc.gov/care/forms/htmlframe.aspx?mode=content/home.htm

The house my grandparents bought was built in 1910. They bought it in 1925 or 1926.

Zillow dates the house in the Bronx that I grew up in as built in 1935.  My parents bought the house new (first owners) in 1940, the year before I was born.  I doubt that it took 5 years to sell after it was built.  I wouldn't trust Zillow.

Looking for a contact or help with the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (jtsa) #usa #rabbinic #records

JUROVSKY,Catherine

Dear all
I have discovered that the Archives of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America based in New York city are in possession of a box of letters of my family "the bespaloff papers"  among which letters from and to famous people. I have written twice to the Archives and received no answer. I had a person from the Library on line and she told me that the place is only accessible to faculty and students apparently due to Covid restrictions. Could somebody have a suggestion of how to proceed to be in touch with the relevant people in that institution. FYI I currently live in France and cannot pay them a visit !
Best regards

Chana Bonn

Using Zillow to obtain an accurate date for when a house was built is not a good idea.  Zillow dated the build-date of my grandfather's house many years after my mother had already grown up there!  I knew the house well, and spent lots of time in it myself.  Zillow was WAY OFF.  I have no idea where Zillow gets their information, but I would definitely not rely on its accuracy.

Jewish Surnames but lost history #galicia #germany #general #names #sephardic

Dakota Gigout

Hi! I am trying to find my Jewish ancestry but am stuck. Does anyone have information on the following surnames:

Heppner
Artmeier
Wessler
Beckman

I got stuck tracing Bernardine Mary Beckman Artmeier's (1845 Jettingen, Germany - 1921 Indiana, USA) father Herman Beckman. From her death certificate, he may have stayed in Germany? I know there was a potato famine in the 1800's that drove immigrants to the US. I can trace my great-grandmother's family immigration to the states (Heppner) from Bavaria, Germany in the 1840's.

In the mid 1900's, a fire destroyed our family's farm and, therefore, all records. I did not grow up being told I was Jewish, however, aside from an instinctual tug toward Judaism, and every maternal surname being listed in a Jewish registry, I am unsure if I am Jewish. It is my greatest wish to answer this question, so any aid is greatly appreciated.

I also noted that in the early 1900's,  John Artmeier (1873-1935) was buried in a Catholic cemetery. I don't know if this has any bearing on religious conversion to Catholicism or, since it was the Great Depression, if it was simply available space.

Thank you for your time,
Dakota

Re: Is the 2nd name on the headstone a given name or a family name? #lithuania #poland #names

Definitely agree with Mr Goldberg, this is a second part of what's referred to as a "Legal Double" given name.  The Jewishgen Given Names database is a good resource to verify this.

Note that the initial consonant in the Russian and Polish roots for "black" is ch (as in English "cheese") -- Russian черный /chorny/, Polish czarny /charny/ -- but the ts/ch alternation in Yiddish is well attested, for example tchotchke/tsatskele, "toy, trinket" (and a few other meanings as well).

Roberta,
Try locating the property on the Sanborn fire insurance maps that were produced in various years. Looks like there was one in 1915 that woukd show what was there in that earlier time period. https://www.loc.gov/item/sanborn05791_032/
Then there was one done in 1928 for comparison https://www.loc.gov/item/sanborn06115_006/

Hope this helps
