JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Hello,
I'm reaching out in case you have similar advice for a relative who used the last name Levin after emigrating to US in early 1900's. Name searches so far are not returning results in Lithuania. Thanks for any info, David Reed

The SS personal files are at the U.S. National Archives on microfilm and the Berlin Document Center. The microfilm is available to anyone who goes there but I don't know about access to the Berlin Document Center originals.
Here are some books that might be of interest: Die Deportation der Juden aus Berlin : die nationalsozialistische Vernichtungspolitik und das Sammellager Grosse Hamburger Strasse / Akim Jah (2013) Mahnort Güterbahnhof Moabit : die Deportation von Juden aus Berlin / Alfred Gottwaldt. (2015) Jews in Nazi Berlin : from Kristallnacht to liberation / edited by Beate Meyer, Hermann Simon, and Chana Schütz. (2009) Jüdisches Leben am Kurfürstendamm / Sonja Miltenberger (2011) You can check www.worldcat.org to see what libraries in the Netherlands have these titles. NIOD should have at least some of them. Jewish Genealogical Conference - 2
#bessarabia
#announcements
Hello everybody,
I have already sent a post about 2022 conference to the group asking about topics of interest and if someone would like to present for our Bessarabia group... and got 1 response from a person who always was at the conference, and would love to go again - thank you. I did plan to go to that conference, and now I am not sure. If only one from Bessarabia group is coming, and there is no interest in any topics, probably no reason to come....?! Call for Proposals for 2022 conference is now open... and the deadline for submission is Sunday, November 21. If anyone is still interested to present on some topic or let us know about your research, ups and downs of it - that would be of interest to our group... Please let me know. Also, please let me know if you are planning to come to the conference. All the best, Yefim Kogan JewishGen Bessarabia Group Leader and Coordinator

So is it possible that there are records for Kupel inside these collections, if the towns are not identified on other revision list years? Routes to Roots indicates that it is at least included in 1858.

Andreas Schwab
This map is about Neumark, the Region. From neu = new and Mark = border state. Neumarkt is from neu and Markt = market or market town. In Polish, Nowy = new and targ = market.
The OP wanted to find a town, not a region. Also, the Neumark region was in Prussia, not Austria-Humgary. -- Andreas Schwab, Montreal, Canada

On her grandmother's gravestone, it is spelled ריבא.
On her mother's gravestone, her mother's name is written ריווא.
It also has been written ריבה.
Does anyone know what the correct spelling is?

Leslie Kramer
Offering to take photos of gravestones in Boston, MA - area Jewish cemeteries.
Having just done a grave search for a request, it had been a bit of a puzzle: the footstone was located in the plot owner's grave, perhaps a common occurrence? So it's important to know the grave owner's name, as well as the person you're trying to locate.
Thanks,
Leslie Kramer

After World War II, on October 26, 1945, the new Polish Communist government decreed that all property in the city of Warsaw was being nationalized, roughly 24,000 buildings and many plots of unbuilt land. Pre-war private owners were not compensated for the property seized.
In today’s Poland, legal processes are underway recognizing the pre-war ownership of those properties. In light of that, I want to make you aware of the following:
In the 27 October 2021 edition of the newspaper Rzeczpospolita, there appeared an announcement calling on heirs of the following pre-war owners to make themselves known to the city government's Office of Decree Issues.
On 19 October 1948 and 14 February 1949, the city was contacted by attorney Stanisław Tyc who at the time represented the owners of a building located at 38 Chłopickiego Street, Warsaw-Praga, formerly designated as "Hip. 2465-Praga."
The person who contacted the city back then was Alter Ganc of the displaced persons camp in Wetzlar, Germany, putative heir to the property owners. There was no subsequent contact with city authorities.
Anyone with an interest in this matter is encouraged to get in touch with the Warsaw city authorities. You have six months to make contact with the city and three more months after that to come up with documentary evidence to support your claim.
JewishGen sleuths are invited to help in making this known to the family in question.
Best wishes,
