If you found a vital record on Steve Morse’s site and it includes the very no , date and boro you can order it from the NYC Municipal
Archives Room 301 at 31 Chambers Street
In Manhattan if it is births to 1909, marriages to 1937 and deaths to 1948.

For all who have the misfortune to use RootsMagic, please be aware that, heaven forbid, you require support, you might find them unavailable.  I have a frozen family report sitting on my screen since last week, and have placed calls and sent messages, and nothing has been resolved.  Support is unavailable on weekends, and I know that, but I contacted them on a weekday.  No excuse!  Buyer/seeker beware!

Re: Jewish orphanage in Brussels after the Holocaust #general

Bernard Flam

Hi from Paris,
Due to my searches to collect archives of our children homes in France after Shoah, I found the thesis (2011-2012, attached to this post) of Antoine Burgard comparing situation of these homes managed by OSE (Oeuvre de secours aux Enfants) in France and AIVG (Aide aux Israelites Victimes de la Guerre) in Belgium.
How is your French, it's time to revise !
List of Belgian AIVG homes is on page 66.
According to a quick reading of pages concerning where are AIVG archives and what is available, it seems that this Belgian Jewish welfare association "Service Social Juif " is the present follower of AIVG : https://www.servicesocialjuif.be/
OSE & AIVG were financed by Joint DC and some documents could be found in Belgium archives of Joint.

This is more “fun” than “true” genealogy, although it is interesting .  This is a free Surname ranking Tool which checks how surnames rank in the 200 and 2010 U.S. Censuses. It provides both the rank and the total number of bearers of the name in the United States that year.  The data behind the tool comes from public files provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.

To try it go to: https://www.dataminingdna.com/united-states-surname-ranking-tool/

I appreciate the link to Steve Morse. I found one  record that I have been searching for but it leads me to Ancestry.com. I already pay for Jewishgen and Myheritage. This is very frustrating. How many do I need to pay for? If I am limited in the amount of sites I pay for which ones are the best to use?

Hi Helen,

I used Mike Tubbs at Vinyl Revival to digitize old recordings:
https://www.vinrev.com/index.html

Very fast, very affordable, and getting to hear voice recordings from 70
years ago was pretty incredible. If anyone knows about cardboard
records, he would.

Hello,
Have you found Alice Moss, her parents and siblings in any of the UK records? FreeBMD.org.uk has births, marriages and deaths. The 1901 and 1911 UK censuses are available on ancestry.com and elsewhere. Where did she marry and where were the children born? Did she emigrate to the USA as a married woman or single? Did her husband serve in the military? Were he or she naturalized? Where and when did they die? Are she and her family in the 1940 US census or possibly in the soon-to-be-released 1950? There may be quite a lot of information available but some research will be needed.

Re: Lithuanian Archive (LVIA) Time Frame for Response Information Needed #lithuania

David Ellis

In 2013, long before COVID, response time was measured in months.  I was more than satisfied with the results, identifying thirteen direct ancestors in Vilnius previously unknown to me.  Now, with closures and other restrictions, we can all expect things to take longer.

This year, I sent payment for research in Belarus more than six months ago, and it's been taking much longer than originally anticipated, for very understandable and justifiable reasons.  The research staff is working very hard with extremely limited hours of archive availability.  I'm sure they'll do a thorough job for their clients in both countries.

Hello David,
You may try searching the Juedische Rundschau for the names and periods you are looking for. I succeeded finding the Ad announcing the birth of my mother and twin brother in 1920. Link:

Hearing recording from 1943 USO record #general

Helen Goldsmith

My mother's brother was an American G.I. in WWII. In 1943 he sent her a voice recording on a cardboard record. I recall hearing it as a child in the 1960s, but I cannot get it to play on my turntable now. Does anyone know of services that might be able to digitize the recording if it's still salvageable?
Thank you.

Anybody can help me to find a marriage record in New York City in 1879-1880?. Louis Gordon married Jennie Rosuk (the spelling of the bride's last name varied a lot) around 1879-1880 but I can not find a marriage record in Ancestry or Familysearch. The census of 1880 shows they were living together, and the 1875 city of New York census does not have information about Manhattan, where I believe the wedding took place. I want to find out Louis' mother's maiden name.

Who was my grandfather? #poland

Abe Lederman

Hello,

I'm fairly new to genealogy, having spent just the last 3-4 months building my father's side of my family tree.

My father, Leib Lederman, was born in the Warsaw / Wlodawa area in April 1925. He took the surname Lederman from his mother, Raizel Lederman.

I know a lot about the Lederman's from Wlodawa, including my great grandfather, Schulim Lederman, born in 1865, who survived the war (he and 10 other Lederman's escaped Poland when Germany invaded and spent WW2 in Tajikistan), and died in 1961 in Israel.

With regard to my grandfather, he is known as Dawid, or Schulam Dawid.

In Yad Vashem testimony, my father's younger sister, gives testimony that her father, Dawid Lederman, was born in 1885 in Warsaw to parents Shalom and Dvora. Lederman is not clearly right as his last name.

In various official documents my father listed his name as Leib Lederman Scher. He also lists his mother's maiden name as Scher. I had never heard the name Scher growing up and wonder if it is  made up, or somehow he is trying to honor his father. My father's younger sister (3 years younger) never lists a maiden name for her mother.

I've spent time trying to find my grandfather's birth record, mostly on JRI-Poland, but with no luck.

I'm heading out to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City on Wednesday and see if they can help me in any way.

Any suggestions of any kind would be greatly appreciated.

Abe Lederman

Is there someone in the Holon-Bat Yam area who could try to ascertain from the cemetery administration who is the party last responsible for the grave of the late Zyskind Brudniewski, who was born in Łódź, Poland, in 1907 and died in the Holon area on August 11, 1973? The purpose of this inquiry is to determine if Mr. Brudniewski left any heirs.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.
