Two thoughts occur to me. One is that there were certainly some Jewish slave owners and we know that slave owners often had children by their female slaves.  The second is that Burgess, while not a Jewish name, could easily be an Anglicization of Berger. Just guessing here but both seem probable.

I've posted photos of two tombstones for which I need translations.

I am very grateful to Fredel who has already responded with Hebrew name and date, but I would like to know whether the additional text is biblical/scriptural or personal words from family. If the latter, I would really appreciate any translation that can be managed. I understand that the stone is very weathered. 1900-1940 record availability for Szepes County Slovakia #slovakia

Hi Everyone,
 
I am having some trouble finding records for approximately 1900 to 1940 for my family near Spiska Bela.  I did find 1869 census though! I'm wondering if the records were destroyed or alternatively, not yet indexed for that area.   I've come up against a similar puzzle with Hollolomnitz, where I might see "unavailable," but as before, I don't know if that means permanently unavailable/destroyed or (hopefully) will be available some day!

I am new to the Jewish Gen groups, and genealogy in general. I came across your request as I was doing online research for a family history I am writing. My father, Herbert Stein, was in the "Religionsschule der  jüdischen Gemeinde zu Berlin". He was born in Berlin in 1926, and attended the school between 1932 and 1936. I have a number of his 'report cards'. Unfortunately he seems to have missed your 1930-1931 years of interest. However, can I help you in any other way?

Also, do you have information about the school, pictures, etc., that you can share?

It appears that he was allowed to stay.  Note that it says "Appeal sustained" under Orders column and the Deported columns are blank.

You may want to check the INS Name Index (1893-1932) on the NARA catalog site (https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75642640 ).  If his name appears, then NARA has some additional correspondence.  However, if his name does not appear, that doesn't rule out that some additional documentation exists -- the index covers only appeals to Washington, DC, and is not yet complete.

KOBER family mystery: Who was Auguste Kober? #usa

One of the big unsolved mysteries in my genealogy relates to a woman named Auguste Kober, who, at age 34 in 1864, arrived in New York City with a son, age 3, named "Edye," along with my great-grandmother Ernestine Kober and Ernestine's brother Louis Kober. Except for the fact that Auguste and her son are listed on the ship manifest with my great-grandmother, I have never been able to connect Auguste Kober to my family tree.
The only credible documents I have found concerning Auguste Kober are the 1864 NYC Castle Garden ship arrival (and related, confirming Hamburg departure list) and an 1878 New York Hebrew Orphan Asylum application from Auguste Kober requesting that a son, Samuel, age 8 1/2, be admitted to the orphanage. That 1878 application indicated that Auguste also had another son, age 18, who was most likely the "Edye" listed on the ship arrival.
According to those documents, the approximate birth years for them were: Auguste Kober, 1828-1830; Edye Kober, 1861; and, Samuel Kober, 1870. (I have found other records and family trees seemingly with these people listed; however, they have to be discounted as irrelevant due to the birth years mentioned above. Also, the 1878 orphanage application indicated that Auguste Kober was dying of a fatal illness at the time, further discounting the other, later records found.)
FYI, the Kober family that I know I am related to came from Kempen, Posen, Prussia (Kepno, Poland). I have a family history website at martinfischer.webs.com. Any further suggestions?

In Romania, Jewish children were definitely named after deceased ancestors. My late father, Nathan (Nuta), born in Raducaneni in 1911, was named after his paternal grandfather, Nuta Tailic. As a matter of fact, the name "Nuta" was so common in the family that the family name was eventually changed from "Tailic" to "Natanzon".

"Wheatstacks," a Van Gogh watercolor stolen by the Nazis, was sold at auction by Christie's in New York Thursday for $35.9 million. (Christie's)

 

A watercolor painting by Vincent Van Gogh that was stolen by the Nazis from its Jewish owner during the Holocaust was sold at auction for $35,855,000 Thursday, breaking the record for the largest sum ever paid for a Van Gogh painting on paper at auction.  The painting, called “Meules de blé” in French of “Wheatstacks” in English, was completed by Van Gogh in 1888 and features a colorful wheat harvest scene.

 

It had been purchased by Max Meirowsky, a German Jewish art collector, in 1913. When Meirowsky left Germany for Amsterdam in the face of growing antisemitism in 1938, he left the painting with an art dealer who sold it to Alexandrine de Rothschild of the famed banking family. When Rothschild left Germany for Switzerland, her art collection was seized by the Nazis.

 

The painting’s whereabouts between the end of World War II and the 1970s are unknown, but in 1979, American businessman Ed Cox purchased the painting at a gallery in New York.

 

The proceeds from Thursday’s sale are set to be split between Cox’s estate and the descendants of Meirowsky and Rothschild, according to the terms of a negotiation facilitated by the Christie’s auction house.
