Primary records in Austria Hungary #events

TALK REMINDER -JEWISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN

The JGSGB German Sig will meet from 2-5 pm GMT via Zoom on 5 December 2021 with invited Guest Speaker Christina Kaul who will be speaking to us about “Primary Jewish records in German speaking Austria-Hungary”.

Christina’s talk concerns Jewish records in Austria Hungary (Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia, Hungary). The sources cover Jewish community books, Familianten books and Catholic control books on Jewish inhabitants’ as well as Jewish conscriptions and land records. The talk will focus on primary records rather than secondary databases like JewishGen and thus allow researchers and family historians to go back further in time; for example, the 1651 census in Moravia includes Jewish communities and that in parts of Moravia Jewish land records are digitalized going back as far as 1550.

Hopefully after that, we will also have time to discuss some of the new developments and recent discoveries in German-Jewish genealogy, and the meeting will end with an opportunity for you to ask any questions about your own family history research. It would be helpful if you could email me your questions in advance to  pheilbrunn@...

Register in advance to attend this paid for zoom meeting the cost is £5 for non-JGSGB German Sig members. Register at: https://tixoom.app/leighdworkin/nyztg5lq

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. If you have problems joining on the day, please email chairman@...  preferably in the 15 minutes before the meeting starts.

I'd say he could be the man on the right in the upper picture - more so than any of the others.
Something about his eyebrows, and the angle and size of his ear (relative to his face) and the slight tilt of his head to the viewer left (his own right) make think so.

Re: 1897 Odessa Census Name Index #records #ukraine

Ariel Parkansky

Hi Roberta,

Just for information, following an agreement between JG and the FHL we translated 10 microfilms of the 1897 Odessa Census (2530 records) between 2017 and 2019.
Unfortunately there was some issues about the agreement and the project is currently on hold.

The 2530 indexed records should be searchable on the JG Ukraine DB. They are also available on the All Odessa Database on the Odessa Kehilalinks (https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/odessa).

Both Hebrew places are probably misspelled. I am identifying the first place as Moghilev -Podolski, now in Ukraine. During WWIi Romanian Jews  (especially from Bassarabia, Bukowina and Moldova regions) were deported to Transnistria. The majority of them were either killed or died from the very harsh conditions. The deportation started in 1941 and Moghilev was one of the killing places.

Thanks to David for posting the alternate link!  Yes, this annotation in the name column is a reference to New York verification of landing work and points to a local New York office file where they kept a copy of all the requests and replies for verifications.  Sadly, the old New York District files do NOT survive.  But the reference tells us his landing was verified for some reason.  The annotation reads:

V[erification of] L[anding], [New York file number] 98917/671 - 3/20/??  The circled letters at the end should be the verifier's initials but does look unusual.

We cannot tell if this verification was for some benefit (such as naturalization) or enforcement (investigation, deportation, etc.).  Remember, strict instructions directing all natz verifications to be noted in the occupation field only went out in 1926.  Prior to that, we see different styles at different ports--if they annotated at all.  So if this was pre-1926 it could be verification for anything.  One with more information about this passenger, like where he lived in the 'teens or twenties (when it appears the annotation was made), variant names, and more, might be able to make more sense of it.

A translation would be greatly appreciated. I believe it to be Yiddish, but could be Hebrew.

Re: Yad Vashem Names Database #holocaust

Odeda Zlotnick

"Can't get results" could mean the question is too complicated, or that the site did'nt respond at all -- two very different issues.
After reading you letter  tried the names database:
Central DB of Shoah Victims' Names (yadvashem.org)
No problem connecting.

Asked for just a name, that would doubtlessly be there, "Cohen".

ViewMate Translation request - russian #russia #records #translation

tiarem@...

I've posted a record in Russian for which I need a translation. It is an excerpt from a register of people evacuated from Leningrad in 1942, including cousins of mine with the surname DIN. I am only interested in the 3 entries for the DIN family and the person below them in the list.  The document is on ViewMate at the following address:

https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jewishgen.org%2Fviewmate%2Fviewmateview.asp%3Fkey%3DVM96105&data=04%7C01%7C%7Ccb2436e38ce44d5e0d5008d9af838273%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637733801631312134%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=aefs2mlsujnBh9RD%2BhYOgM6hm8gaCq65pSFShvCAniI%3D&reserved=0

Looking at the clothing and hairstyles etc in your earlier image, the photo is definitely before 1914 and much more likely to be c. 1905-1910.

Leipzig civil registry records #germany

Heshel Teitelbaum

Hi everyone:

Is anyone familiar with obtaining a birth record from the registry
office or from the City Archives in Leipzig? :

b) The website for the Standesamt Leipzig states quite clearly that
there are a couple of stumbling blocks:  You can only access birth
records if they are more than 110 years old (which seems to be
my case; but I might be off by 10 years.   It also states that only
children or grandchildren can have access.  This is not my case:
The man in question, Joachim Kaufmann, who might or might
not be Jewish, was not my ancestor; but I need to find his birth
date for a humanitarian purpose. I do not need an actual birth
certificate - merely the date of birth.
c) The registry office website states that if the birth record is more
than 110 years old, then the record is held in the City Archives. But
it does not state explicitly that you have to be a direct descendant
in that case to access the record.

My main questions are:
a) Did birth records from ca 1900 survive WWII?  If so ....
b) Does anyone have experience dealing with the civil registry office
or the City Archives in Leipzig?
c) Are there any other sources to obtain the same information? i.e.
has anyone created / published an online index listing births in
    Leipzig around 1900?

Thanks

Hope to discover info from my grandparents, who all immigrated to the USA around the turn of 1900 as teenagers....born around 1885ish.  Belarus: town names which sound like Yampole & Nedaboyvich....family names Goldberg and Goldenberg.  From Zabrze, Poland--(Austria-Hungary):  Max Hamburger, 1885-1961. Goldie (nee Bernstein) Hamburger 1885-1926 born Belarus.  I have visited the Jewish cemetery in Zabrze and it is being restored, mostly by Gentile volunteers.  I have photos of some of the tombstones and a link to a group which was performing the restorations in 2012.  Thank you in advance.

Zbigniew & Julia MESSER, Szczecin - Israel - Brooklyn, NY #usa

Yale Reisner

The November 24, 2021, edition of the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza carried a legal announcement in which the Regional Court for Szczecin-Centrum, First Civil Division, under Docket No. I Ns 318/21 is seeking the following individual or her heirs:

Julia MESSER, daughter of Emanuel and Luiza (née KRIEGER), born in Szczecin September 9, 1955.  Her husband was Zbigniew MESSER.

Their last address in Poland was 14/4 Kollataja Street, Szczecin.

They emigrated to Israel in early 1981 and then to the United States.

Their last known address was:

1555 East 19th Street, Apt. 7L

Brooklyn, NY 11230.

Juiia remained in touch by letter with her sister Eleonora in Szczecin until her letters abruptly stopped coming in February 1999.

Julia MESSER or her heirs have four months from the date of the court’s notice to make themselves known to the court.

I have no further information on this matter.  I just wanted any possible heirs to be aware that they are being sought by the court.

Best wishes,

Re: Did my maternal grandmother convert to Judaism? #general

Jules Levin

It is my understanding that in Reform the child of a gentile mother who is raised as a Christian, e.g. confirmed in the Catholic Church, still must undergo a Reform-style conversion ceremony.  The child raised as a Christian, to be exact.

A few avenues to consider.  1. Did your grandparents attend a synagogue? If so, you might find conversion records there or at a nearby synagogue that has/had a mikvah.  2. What do census records from the times say?  3. Does the Catholic cemetery have records that show religion at time of death?

FWIW, you, your sister and your mother can convert at any time.  Also, Reform Judaism considers the child of a parent who is Jewish to be Jewish, whether it's the mother or the father.
