What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?

How do I access the Group’s webpage?

Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.

I first came across the concept of “Kiddush Hashem” when I was overseeing translation of the Kovel (Ukraine) Yizkor book. Literally translated, it means “Sanctification of the Lord,” which manifested itself in accepting martyrdom to glorify Him. A chapter in the Kovel book (https://bit.ly/3mThxLt
That spirit runs through “The Hasidic Dance in Oswiecim” a chapter from the “Oswiecim; Auschwitz Memorial Book” recounting how Jews prepared to face their march to the gas chambers. It is hard to know how much of this is an actual historical account or folklore (or a combination of both), but in either case, the chapter illuminates the deep meaning of Kiddush Hashem. Its main figure is the “Dancing Rabbi,” who had earlier “conquered the crematorium ovens of Auschwitz,” and later inspired his young Hasidic followers in Bergen Belsen to face their death in the spirit of Kiddush Hashem. But this time, it led to a different and surprising end.

Have you tried calling the cemeteries and asking if they will take a photo for you. It is either free or a small charge. They have more time to do this in the winter when they are not busy with landscaping.

In addition to sorting my Ancestry DNA matches from newest to oldest, I always click the "Shared DNA" button at the top of the page and enter a custom cM range starting with 40 cM. That eliminates dozens of small, likely endogamous, matches and leaves me with a manageable list of new matches.

Gary, I’m surprised that you don’t know of Ladyzhin/Ladyzhin in Ukraine as that town has a page on JewishGen. There is another page with info on Ladyzhyn

How far back have you traced? Tuscany has quite good records. I think there are also notarial records.
I suggest asking in The Sephardic Diaspora group on Facebook, which is Sephardic genealogy's hive mind. Also watch Luca Ascoli's talk on Jewish surnames in Italy, on the Sephardic Genealogy channel on YouTube. Best wishes, David Mendoza

His only sister listed her birthplace as Biala (which I believe to be Biala Podlaska) if this helps any.

"primary anaemia" in 1927 was most likely due to starvation in a 14 year old Russian. The circumstances of his death would probably give a clue to exact cause.
It is now an out-dated concept as all anaemias are secondary to a cause and not primary.

The 1857 census images are linked to the records, just click on the underlined surname. The 1848 census images can be requested from JewishGen (ask Vivian Kahn or Eric Bloch). Malcov and Stropkov records are on FamilySearch (Malcov in books of Bardejov rabbinate, Stropkov in its own books). Bardejov is indexed on FS, Stropkov is indexed on JG. Ancestry to Raise US Subscription Prices February 1, 2022

Ancestry has announced they are raising their subscription prices for U.S. monthly subscriptions for existing customers to $24.99 for U.S. Discovery subscription and All Access Memberships will cost $49.99 per month. To explore all their options or to change or cancel your membership visit your account settings to contact Ancestry at: https://support.ancestry.com/s/contactsupport?language=en_US. There was no information if Ancestry will be raising their Canadian, United Kingdom, Australia, French, or other subscriptions.
Ancestry has added new record collections. Over the last decade 20 billion records have been added to their site, bringing their total to more than 30 billion.
Remember, in the U.S. and Canada that many public libraries have Ancestry subscriptions. While for the past two years ProQuest made the Ancestry Library edition available remotely, the remote access ended on December 31, 2021. However, while the remote access terminated, one can still access the Library edition at those public libraries that have the subscription in person at those libraries. Best to check with your library.

Identify building and location of an early group photo?

The photo below includes my maternal grandmother Pearl GELSTEIN Lehman (originally LIMONCZYK) seated 6th from right, counting from the woman with a child on her lap at the extreme right, then four more women, then my grandmother. She was an early Zionist and feminist, one of the founders of the Golda Myerson (Me'ir) chapter of Pioneer Women (today Na'amat) in Baltimore in 1927. She arrived in the U.S. from "Russia" (Orinin, Ukraine) in 1914 just after the start of WWI and married my grandfather (her second cousin) in Baltimore in 1918. The group picture below might be of an early picture of the Labor Zionist group to which she belonged before the founding of the Pioneer Women chapter (since it includes men). Or it might be an educational group picture. Or it might be none of those. If it was taken in Baltimore, I was never able to find the matching building anywhere around East Baltimore where the family lived. Of course it could be a building that has long since been torn down. Then again, it might not be in Baltimore since she had relatives in Philadelphia, Washngton DC and Montreal, and possibly more. Has anyone else seen this picture or know anything about it? It is hard to judge my grandmother's age here but I would guess it was taken either in the mid to late teens or the 1920s. Hope to share information with any and all who have any knowledge of it.

Hi,
I’ve been researching the Grobstein family, as my great grandmother was Shirlee Grobstein Cohen. I have quite a bit of information from other researches, but I don’t have anything about Shirlee, except that she was killed in Russia, circa 1904-1906. According to his naturalization documents, Harry was born in Bobruisk, so I would “assume” Shirlee was also. Do you know if any marriage/death records were kept? Or a way to possibly search cemetery records? Her husband, Harry Cohen, is another person I’m looking for. He came to the states in 1906, but I can’t find a manifest, or naturalization documents. I’ve heard that, if someone was in steerage, they wouldn’t be listed on a manifest. Is that true? Thank you! Nancy Newmark Smith
