Re: Translation of Hebrew tombstones Albany NY Bendel family #translation

davidmdubin@...

To the first I’ll just add that the first line of the first stone is a quote from genesis 24:1.

the second stone:
H(ere)L(ies)
the woman Ms Pessele wife of Mr Abraham
eighty seven years of age
she died Thursday (maybe Wednesday?) 6 Tishri
and buried Friday the 30th (?) of that month
year (5)622 by the short count (ie, not writing the thousands place)
May her soul be bound in the bonds of (everlasting) life

the dates are hard to read and my numbers are likely off,  as it is unusual not to bury quickly.

the last line is a boilerplate abbreviation used on both stones (and nearly all stones I’ve seen from the past few hundred years)

Are there lists of those incarcerated (and what happened to them) by the Nazis at the HKP forced labor camp in Vilna? I believe I may have a relative who was listed as a seamstress in the setup by Karl Plagge, which was somewhat similar to Schindler's.
Thank you.

December 2021 Summary of IAJGS Records Access Alert #records #general #jgs-iajgs

Jan Meisels Allen

As mentioned previously, every month I post a listing of the IAJGS Records Access Alert topics from the previous month for you to see the variety of issues…some were posted on this discussion group but most were not—all postings are included below.  The following are the summaries for the month of December , 2021.  In order not to miss out on important information it is worthwhile for you to be subscribed to the Records Access Alert. Without records, genealogists cannot do genealogy –making certain that we retain access and gain access where it is impaired is every genealogists' responsibility.

The IAJGS Board of Directors approved opening the Records Access Alert to anyone who is interested in records access. This was announced previously.  We now have subscribers from many genealogical organizations not previously able to subscribe. To be on top of what is happening you are encouraged to register for the Records Access Alerts to receive the information in a timely manner.  If you are interested in any of the above items, please register for the IAJGS Records Access Alert and look at them in the archives.  To register for the IAJGS Records Access Alert go to: http://lists.iajgs.org/mailman/listinfo/records-access-alerts  and follow the instructions to enter your email address, full name and which genealogical organization you belong to a society, SIG  or a subscriber of JewishGen, AVOTAYNU, Legal Genealogist  etc. You will receive an email response that you have to reply to, or the subscription will not be finalized. The alerts are archived and once you register you may access the archives at: http://lists.iajgs.org/mailman/private/records-access-alerts/

The IAJGS Records Access Alert is not a daily announcement list. Depending on what happens worldwide, there may be no postings for several days and other times there may be several in one day.

These are listed alphabetically not chronologically.  Each month the locales covered differ.

ViewMate translation requested from RUSSIAN ( correction). KUPERSZTEJN records from TERESPOL #translation

J.R. Silver

This is a re-post.

I would be very grateful for help in translation from Russian of the following vital records on Viewmate:

1. Terespol 1872 B #21 Gerszko KUPERSZTEJN

https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM96772

2. Terespol 1878 M #1 Gersz KUPERSZTEJN & Chaia KINCBERG

https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM96774

3. Terespol 1885 B # 39 Boruch KUPERSZTEJN

https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM96776

4. Terespol 1899 B #11 Gersz Lejb KUPERSZTEJN

https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM96777

I am seeking to connect these KUPERSZTEJN's to my family tree.

My direct line of descent is as follows:

Maternal Grandfather:

Gersz /Herszko/ Tsvi /Harry KUPERSZTEJN/ COOPERSTEIN, b. 1879 Międzyrzec Podlaski, married to Gitel/Gusta PRZEDECKI/ASHER of Manchester, UK, d. Cardiff, Wales 1972

Great Grandfather:

Boruch/Beyrach/Berachiah/ Barnett KUPERSZTEJN/COOPERSTEIN, b. abt 1851 Międzyrzec Podlaski, married to Frejda Leja ROZEN of Międzyrzec Podlaski, d. Cardiff, Wales 1916

GG Grandfather:

Moszko Mendel/ Moshe Menachem KUPERSZTEJN, b. Pratulin, 1824

married to Dyna ZYLBERKRANTZ of Międzyrzec Podlaski, d.?

GGG Grandfather: Hersz Lejb Jankielowicz (Mendelowicz) KUPERSZTEJN, b. circa 1800, resident Pratulin 1820's-1840's, married to Fejga Dwojra LILIENTHAL of Biała Podlaska, d.?

GGGG Grandfather: Jankiel? (Mendel?) b. late 1700's? Resident Pratulin 1820's?

GGGGG Grandfather Mendel? b. mid 1700's?

Pratulin is a tiny hamlet on the River Bug, which today forms the Poland/Belarus border.
From 1826, Jewish vital events were registered in neighbouring Janów Podlaski.
Kupersztejn's living in Janow P., Terespol, Konstantynow nad Bugiem and Brest Litovsk (Bug river towns) in the 1800's are presumably descended from the Kupersztejn's of Pratulin.

[There is a theory that ALL the KUPERSZTEJN/KUPERSHTAJN/KUPFERSZTEIN's of this region are of common rabbinic descent, but that is another big story.]

Many thanks for your anticipated help in adding branches to the family tree. Please respond in the form provided on Viewmate.

The second stone is much more difficult to read. I'll let someone else give it a try.  However, the Hebrew doesn't offer any additional important information over the English inscription, other than saying she was the wife of Avraham.

If you could take better pictures of the stones, when the sun's angle is optimal, it would be much easier to read everything.  That said, I will offer a free translation of the important parts of the inscription, filling in the blanks with educated guesses.  Here is what I managed to read from Abraham's stone:
"Here lies a dear man, Avraham, the son of Eliyahu Aryeh Bendel.  Avraham: An old man who all his life followed the good path.  Died aged 93 on Thursday, the 16th of Elul and was buried on the eve of the Sabbath, the 17th of the month in the year 5621" (Aug 22, 1861)

ViewMate translation request - German #translation

Nehama and Moshe Kutten

I've posted a vital record in German for which I need a translation. It is on ViewMate at the following address:
https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM96900

The article was taken from the Ternopol’s Yizkor book, which I am now translating from Hebrew to English. The German text that starts with the Author note no. 174 on bottom of column 96 and continues on bottom of columns 97 and 98, is the response of the Galitsia’s Austrian Governor to the appeal by the Jewish community of Ternopol regrading the right to vote and to be elected. I have the translation made by the Deepl translator (https://www.deepl.com/en/translator) but its is not good enough to be published.

Please respond via the form provided on the ViewMate image page.

Thank you very much in advance

Re: Who Betrayed Anne Frank and Her Family? #holocaust

This TV segment has generated a lot of uninformed comment on what happened in Holland during the Holocaust. I was even surprised to hear the Dutch psychologist interviewed in the 60 Minutes segment describing the betrayers as psychopaths. Clearly he didn't know his country's history. Some may have been psychopaths, but most were your average citizens. Denunciation became a national pastime in Holland during the war. It wasn't just Jews and Antifascists who were at risk of being denounced, but everyone else being denounced by their neighbors, relatives and even their spouses. Denunciation was so rampant, that it even took the Germans by surprise, they had seen nothing like this in Germany or any other country they had occupied.

For further information I would recommend the following book published by Yad Vashem in 2017, "Denunciation and Rescue - Dutch Society and the Holocaust" by Pinchas Bar-Efrat.

I have a letter that was written to my father I believe in 1954. I have posted it on ViewMate and is under 2 different postings. If the names have any information about any Golds, what it says about them.  Also if the names talked about seem to be relatives, I would like to know that also. Thanks.

I've posted a Passenger List in German. It is on ViewMate at the following address.
https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM96932
I need help identifying some of the columns and notations for the last 9 lines of the passenger list. I assume the bracket to the right of the nine lines are for indicating that these nine people were traveling as one family. My questions: 1) There is a second bracket to the right of the town Eperjes and I cannot read the notation to the right of that bracket, 2) Eperges is named, but does the column header say?, 3) what do the last 3 column headers read?
